The Fokker used a Oberursel UR2 engine, that was a copy of the Rhone rotary engine. The brass/copper pipes lead to the back of the engine. The Meng people did it correctly. Very nice build.
@Mishn0
@Mishn0 3 жыл бұрын
It looks like the UR.II could have the pipes either in the front or the back but the pictures I see of DR.1s all have them in back like the kit does. By the way, those pipes are the intakes. The exhaust just blows out of the cylinder head, it's timed so the exhaust valves open when the cylinder is at the bottom of airplane as the motor spins. There are no exhaust pipes.

The instructions for the engine (and some pictures of the engine on the plane) can be found on the wingnutwings site. Air intakes are on the back. The instructions seem to say that the Rhone engine used copper while the Oberurssel copy had metal pipes
@Hjerte_Verke
@Hjerte_Verke 3 жыл бұрын
@@axelvanderminne2124 I reviewed the instruction manual and it appears parts of the engine are left unglued and intended to rotate - but does the engine and propeller rotate together as a unit or is the engine stationary and only the propeller moves? I really would like a model that depicts a proper rotary engine.

Thank you for a helpful demonstaration of this kit. I got it this year and managed to get a 'bookazine' including instructions but nothing beats watching a good modeller do the build, especially for a returner to the hobby after several decades.

I received my kit in the mail the same day this video was posted, so I'm excited to get building. I'm glad to see you build and paint this as an average modeler could do, and not in multiple layers of paint and weathering powders. It's also good to know that the parts fit well enough so that we average builders won't have to struggle with ill fitting parts. If those were your goals, mission accomplished!

What do you mean by "multiple layers of paint and weathering powders"? Surely you don't think that pre-shading and using pigments is above the level of the average modeler, right?

Many years ago(about 30 or 40 as I recall) I saw Richtofens DR1 seat and one of the fuselage black cross markings and a wing tip on display at the Royal Canadian Military Institute in Toronto....they acquired them from Roy Browns family....Brown was given the trophies after he originally got credit for shooting him down...they have since moved locations but I believe they still have the artifacts and can be seen if one makes an appointment....it was pretty exciting for me to actually see pieces of the real aircraft Richtofen was shot down in...I'm from Toronto and had no idea they were there until I read about it in a book by Dale Titler called The Day the Red Baron Died....I called them up and they said I could come down and see them as long as I made an appointment which I immediately did...they were part of a display behind glass and I remember the curator telling me that a previous curator (decades prior) had been fired for giving away(or selling ) small pieces of some of it !....

Yes, compared to a stationary radial motor, the "rotary' motor is in reversed. In the latter, the block rotates on a stationary crank. This necessitates the accessory drive & intake pipes next to the firewall. When modeling for accuracy, these details make a big difference. BTW, beautiful job!

Finally a build video for this kit! Glad to see it goes together so well. One thing I noticed here, and on my kit, is the warped wings. Especially the top wing. I'll definitely be straightening mine out, but otherwise, the detail on this kit is gorgeous. Only other negatives of the kit itself: no rigging instructions at all. And the colour call outs are wrong in some cases. Tires on these planes were not black, but more frequently a very pale grey or even pink colour. I'm hoping someone will release alternative markings for this kit, as I want to paint mine up as one of the Baron' alternative machines; 477/17. Even with the negative points, I will most likely build a couple of these. It's one of my favourite planes, and there's so many different colour schemes. Thank you for the video, I clicked like as soon as I saw it.

Just to clarify, scraps of the fabric taken as souvenirs by soldiers from the genuine aircraft, which I have seen in museums, suggest that the underside of the MvR triplane was painted a pale blue, near to light grey. Something close to WW2 Luftwaffe hellblau. Barry

Nice work! I like how you do the steps in putting it together. This kit is not Wingnut Wings quality overall, the instruction book and decals most noticeably aren’t near that benchmark. But the plastic and working parts are very close. Meng makes very, very good stuff, but WNW was in a class by itself. Of course it also costs $20-$30 less than had it been a Wingnuts Kit also. Just glad we have it and Meng came through. Thanks for the video! 👍

Andy, do not forget to add a large amount of "burnt oil", on the underside, right behind the engine. These airplanes had engines with a total loss oil system. The burnt castor oil became dark-brown, almost black, and stained the underside quite a bit. It was impossible to keep these airplanes clean, especially on the underside. So, if you weather a model like this, showing an airplanes that had flown for quite some time, you must add a dark brown belly. Ofcourse, it took a couple of weeks to get that dirty. Never the less, the model turned out just great...!!

The Oberursel engine is modelled correctly. The exhaust pipes are at the back of the engine. The cylinders are positioned directly in the airflow to improve cooling. At Hahnweide Oldtimer Meeting in 2019 I could attend the "dogfihgts" of Mikeal Carlson with his DR1 and a fokker E3 replica. Very amazing. In YT you could find some films of these event, inculding pictures from the exhibition with details of the Oberursel engine.

From research I've done, the Baron had at least two fully red tripes. The first was 152/17 which sported a progression of red until the plane was fully red. The other completely red one was 425/17, the one he flew the day he was killed. Depending on the time frame, 425/17 had a white rudder but was eventually painted over with red. There is a third Triplane that has been stated was painted in overall red... 477/17. My research shows this aircraft being described as all red in some photos and also as the factory finish of streaked Fokker green over doped linen with the red struts, cowl and wheel covers denoting JG1. Keep in mind that all triplanes were delivered in this streaked green finish.

Engine is correct. The Le Rhône 9J engine was manufactured under license in Germany by Motorenfabrik Oberursel and sold as the Oberursel Ur.II. These were standard in a Dr.I. However some German pilots would pay a bounty to infantrymen who could get them a Clerget engine from the wreck of a shot down Sopwith Camel. Almost same engine, but an extra 30 or so horse power. So, some images online may show that.

The exhaust runs behind the cylinder heads. You also weren’t sure but the ammo box then wing spar area and then fuel tank as you work from the cockpit forward. I fly a 3/4 Triplane that I built from an Airdrome Aeroplanes kit. My favorite airplane for sure.

Also. The paint at the time was flat and not gloss. I’ve seen the actual fabric and motor. Both at the imperial war museum, national museum of the air force. and Kermit Weeks has some of the actual fabric that he used to paint his full size triplane.

My final comment. Very nice by the way. Inside the fuselage there should be some red bleed through on the fabric. There is no structure outside of the plywood that lets the paint color bleed through. Nit picks for sure nice model. Keep up the good work.

Everyone else is correct on the engine. I worked on Pratt & Whitney R-1340 radial engines for 9 years and the first thing I noticed when you showed the models engine was the nose case and pushrod tubes were up front. That told me right there that the engine wasn’t on backwards. Now, don’t hold me to this, but instead of just the propeller spinning, the whole engine may have been spinning. Some did during WWI, but I’m not sure which ones did it that way. Other than that, another great video and another superb model by you. Thank you for sharing!

Great job. I wanted to add that I've read that von Richthoven sometimes had to have the red paint thinned because it was in short supply. Because of this, some of his planes showed the factory paint under the red. Something to consider the next time you do a Dr.1.
@waynecoulter6761
@waynecoulter6761 2 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind too, that the markings for JG1 had red cowlings, struts and wheel covers. Even the factory painted Fokker green aircraft would carry these red struts, cowls and wheel covers. The remainder of the aircraft could be painted as the pilot wished. For example, you see Dr.1 152/17 often depicted in a partial red scheme with the red cowl, struts and wheel covers, top surface of the upper wing and the fuselage aft of the Eisernes Kreuz (as time passed this fuselage color eventually extended to the rear edge of the cockpit and eventually completely red (152/17 was his first all red tripe). MvR's brother Lothar flew Dr.1 454/17 which was painted with the red cowl, struts and wheel covers in red, but the upper surface of the top wing and the rear part of the fuselage were painted in yellow. MvR was a Uhlan, depicted by the red coloring, LvR was Cavalry, depicted by the yellow. LvR was shot down in 454/17. He was involved in a dogfight and the upper wing started to disintegrate... he was able to get the plane down but upon landing crashed and bashed his face into the machine guns, breaking his jaw. MvR crashed one of his earlier tripes, Dr.1 114/17, which threw a cylinder, knocking off the cowling and forcing the Baron to crash land.

Hello Andy, That was a nice built, as for the engine, and it has mentioned before, it is the right way now. Indeed it is an Oberursel Ur.II, not a le Rhone as You mentioned in the video (although an Oberursel is is licenced built of Le Rhone) hope I got the words right, I'm Dutch 😁 Anyway, picked up mine yesterday at a (almost) local hobby store and startend to built it right away. I have this kit in my stash and will soon start work on it (having received a replacement Sprue B from Meng after the first arrived damaged). I really like the way the photoetch isn't attached I find sanding the stubs off really small PE a serious challenge, to say the least. However, what does peeve me is that they leave instructions for rigging holes to drill, but no instructions about the rigging itself.
@waynecoulter6761
@waynecoulter6761 2 жыл бұрын
Rigging on the Triplane was relatively easy. There were crossed wires bracing the landing gear struts, crossed wire bracing between the struts between the fuselage and upper wing, control cables obviously and two wires leading from the fuselage to the top wing denoting the aileron control cables. that's it.

I am sick to death already of so called ‘professional modellers’ moaning about to this kit, using its ‘faults’ as a reason to show off their ability to count rivets. Andy you should one day build that aircraft from Balsa wood and a tissue fabric. I believe Peanut Scale models has them not sure if there around still, I did once it far more difficult they have the rubber band for the propeller to fly it. But great job on the build..

IMO very good weathering! They took care of their planes/equipment, so I don’t think that the machines were very dirty all the time.

1:56 I like that intro, throwing in a paint bottle, the wrong glue (paper glue I call it) and a cutter then shake the box and a tank is out the box. imagine if I did that and it actually gave me a Bf109

No Andy you've done it right the old Revell kit for 1957 which I recently built which is has bad fitting it's still a nice kid but just fits bad I didn't want to talk about it I'm the fitting messed up my kit so I might that might be I don't know I'm going to complete it but I might be in the future anyways yes the Fokker dr-1 engine was backwards but you are correct that's the way it's supposed to go in this. I believe those are copper cooling jackets and think what I want to say the Germans had huge problems with that engine it does hit you know the plane was going to go down

There is a guy on KZfaq rebuilding one of those planes that crashed, plane savers is his KZfaq channel if you're interested, it's a very cool project, they restored an old DC-3 last year when everyone was taken their's over to Normandy for the D day anniversary, they didn't make it to Normandy, but it did fly that day

That's an awesome finish Andy, and will make a great companion to your earlier Albatross build. I missed it, but was the wire that you used for the bracing included in the kit or was it something that you had laying around?

I would have liked to have seen how you painted up the propeller, there a few methods for this that I have seen online using oil paints? Fantastic build Andy!
