I've just bought this kit - yesterday - after working on the Bronco Bishop SPG which appears to have a massive parts count compared to the Tamiya Valentines plus individual track links, always a hoot. I'm grinding through the Bronco kit this weekend to allow myself a little light relief with the Tamiya kit. Great figures

Very easy to get confused with back and front on an Archer. I think your videos are amazingly informative.

Watching you assemble these kits is strangely soothing, kind of therapeutic. The designers of the actual vehicle must have felt that it and the crew were expendable- they designed it with the rear, the most vulnerable face, to be presented toward the enemy.
@MrHFam-st4ni
@MrHFam-st4ni 2 жыл бұрын
The British military were discontinuing the use of the Valentine infantry tank. Meanwhile, they were trying to find an appropriate platform to house their highly effective 17pdr. It was decided that this AT gun was to be mounted on the Valentine hull in some way. The problem with the gun facing forwards was that it would actually overbalance the vehicle so they had to have the gun rear facing. This is more likely a reflection of desperation rather than that of feeling the crew were expendable since the Allied forces were facing a highly increasing amount of panthers and tigers (1944) compared to previous theatres of war in which they had fought. And, in response to your comment about how the rear is the most vulnerable face, you must keep in mind how their is an extremely large and lengthy in the way which is able to protect the crew. The designers of the archer kept this in mind and this mindset continues to be found in many vehicles today (mainly IFVs) in which the engine itself serves as a piece of 'armour.'

@mushmorant9253
@mushmorant9253 6 жыл бұрын
The Hellcat may have technically been a better TD given its speed and fully rotatable power turret, but it was let down somewhat by its underpowered 76.2 mm gun which, unlike the 17 pounder, was unreliable at defeating heavily armored German vehicles. The Archer was apparently a pretty good design for a jury-rigged affair. At least you could displace in a hurry (the gun was directed toward the rear of the vehicle) to avoid return fire and perhaps even fire at enemy units while on the run.
@doejon9424
@doejon9424 2 жыл бұрын
Love the M18 Hellcat but this is pure genius, by accident because the gun was so large. Shoot & fly away, if followed.. slow down and start firing again. No pesky turret to deal with ! Plus that 17 pounder was a force to be reckoned with. These tank destoyers were mostly requested on different grids on a battalion / divisional level. They usually didn't go into a town or front like the other other tanks. Really love this backward hull concept
@bossogg6915
@bossogg6915 2 жыл бұрын
@@mushmorant9253 The gun couldn't be used on the run, the recoil would've taken the driver's head off. not really an ideal situation when you've got a German Tank Platoon/Company/Regiment/Brigade chasing you.
@Rhaumar
@Rhaumar Жыл бұрын
@@bossogg6915 I was about to mention this. Worst part of this vehicle was the inability to shoot and scoot. You had to abandon the driver's location in order to fire. By the time the driver got back into position, the tank's position was compromised.

The 17 pounder at gun was effective over long to medium ranges, not close as you stated, it was the blast that obscured the target, that made the gun an issue.

@WulfCorbett
@WulfCorbett 6 жыл бұрын
No, the 17 pounder is a 76.2 mm gun. The '77mm' was a cut down 17 pounder, still 76.2mm, but with a shorter barrel, and reduced propellant charge so as to be mounted in a tank turret - the Comet. It was CALLED a 77mm so as to make sure there was no mixup with ammunition or parts. The same was true of the Soviet 76.2mm gun and the 76.2 mm rocket launcher - the rockets were CALLED 77mm, but were still 76.2mm...

rwd76 I am trying to find official paperwork on this but are you insinuating that you must be in the military to have knowledge of military things? That is kind of a slap in the face to modelers that haven't taken on military duties. And many of us, myself included, would have served had it not been for medical reasons that they would not allow. Coming from a 30 year old modeler on the side-you all need to calm down. The original statements were what perplexed us and regardless it is amazing information. There is far too much in-fighting already within the model community. Let's not add more by arguing about this as well.

How the concept of the Archer was born: Thomas are you thinking what I'm thinking? Yeah build it the same way the Germans did with the Jagdpanther and their Jagdpanzer No you blimey idiot I was thinking we should place the main gun backwards that way the driver will have to do a full 180° turn just to have the gunner face what it is to be destroyed! But Max that'll mean the engine will be exposed.. Exactly! The entire crew will be stricken with an adrenaline rush to get the tank facing the right way and kill their targets before they can be destroyed first! Max.. You really... Really need a restraining order on pubs, at least a thousand kilometers away from them.
