I have a feeling that Tamiya May release different versions of the Panzer IV. That may be the reason why they have upper hull built up as such.

Pros : almost everything Cons: price and this is true for most new kits , even kits from 20-30 yr old molds are way too expensive. This makes it hard for new modelers to get started . These companies need to make older models to be $20 or less so kids can purchase. As a kid i could buy models in 1/48,1/32,1/35 with my own money.
@ThrowawayModeller

Most definitely! This is why the hobby is oftentimes failing in countries outside the EURO zone or North America. I myself love modelling, but for this kit, I need to work two days (16 hours) and this is just a base kit! Meanwhile, the Zvezda kit of comparable quality is just 20$! I understand it's Tamiya (and muh quality), but this is too much.
@huwtindall7096

Fair point. Some of these kits are pretty damn pricey. Having only gotten into the hobby recently (been painting miniatures for ages but no scale modelling) I found Taiyma's really old 1/35 models which used to have little motors in them are great value. Over in the UK can get their Panther A for £15, so about $20 US. In the same range there is also a Panzer II, IV and Stug IV. Having built the Panther and Panzer II I'd say I'm really happy with the bang for your buck. Minimum parts but still decent detail levels including armour texture like weld lines. Sure the moulds are a little old so you need to clean up more than your fair share of flashing and the fit isn't as good as modern kits but overall pretty damn good. For a beginner they are affordable and simple enough to put together.

The market is more competitive than it used to be for Tamiya, the rise in complexity probably reflects the fact that other companies are offering kits that can be converted more easily or upgraded with after market, and Tamiya needs to keep up with that, for a long time they've been falling behind

@@joeshmoe9978 they are not so Communist. And it's not just them. The industry has changed, I started 44 years ago, the cost of a kit has gone up more than just inflation, there are lots of players selling after market stuff now. The finished model has a wonderfully real, solid feel to it. The piecewise tracks contribute a lot (it was always rubber/plastic in my time, which took away a lot of the enjoyment), but so does the paint and weathering. I sort of flinch when I hear things like "ok, now I'm going to spend an hour putting millions of .05 mm^2 dots on everything, and then I'll cover that with a wash", but it does help the eye accept the suggestion of realness of the build. The blue-tinged grey is probably completely wrong, but it does suggest a Panzer under the unforgiving Russian sky. Very good!

Seems a nice kit, in fact all Tamiya’s more recent kits all seem to be excellent. I recently built their T-55 and have just primed the Korean War M4a3e8 and have no complaints about either of them, very little sanding needed and almost no filling at all. Even things I usually replace with wire like the handles, grab bars and light guards are OK to use. The only after-market parts I used on either were on the T-55 - thin lead wire for the external fuel lines, which Tamiya don’t represent at all, and Friul tracks to get the “heavy tracks sagging a lot” look. I generally prefer to paint the lower hull sides, wheels, tracks and bogeys etc. before assembly while I can still get at them easily, so I’m not a big fan of tracks assembled from styrene parts which usually have to be fitted before paint. I’ve also come across a few kits with individual styrene track links, and not even an assembly jig provided, which made assembling the tracks a much bigger and more difficult job than the entire rest of the kit. As for the blue, sorry Andy but it doesn’t quite work for me. Before the weathering stage I found myself thinking of SS Panzer Division “Das Leuchten Im Dunkelm“, which was transformed into piles of smoking scrap metal during its first operation, an ill-advised night attack across open ground against massed Red Army AT batteries. Though to be fair weathering has toned down the day-glo effect a lot. I might be won over to it if it was a lot less saturated and the whole tank was somewhat darker in tone. Your weathering job, on the other hand, is excellent. That tank really looks like it’s been wading through deep Russian spring thaw mud.
