I know I’m late to the party, but wanted to say this was a fantastic video. I’ve got a newer Revell version of this model from 2009 which I’m starting now, your experience will hopefully help me minimize the frustration. The instructions are almost exactly the same except there is no mention about seatbelts nor is there photo-etch. After watching what you went through I’m relieved 😂. Thanks very much for sharing!!

Long live the pound shop! together with 'The Range', Aldi, Lidil, etc plus here in South Wales we also have a 'el cheapo' chain of shops called 'What!'.....they have tools in there for jobs that you are never likely to encounter...but...if you did, then'What' will have the answer, you know like a left hand thread zero G metric adjustable vegitarian low light wrench! Okay, I may have elaborated somewhat but you get the picture! Inspiring as ever Mr S,G, & Son!

I agree 100% with ' Darren Wixon' below, I was forced to retie from a job I loved (Paramedic in Welsh Ambulance Service) due to health issues, became very depressed, but watching Mr S. G. & Son's videos on model making, well, they were responsible for re-awakening a hobbly I last did about 50 years ago when I was 14!, An airfix B29 bomber. It was hand painted in revell enamel paints (they may have been Airfix enamels, dont think they were HUMBROL, but i could be wrong, after all it was 'Half a centuary' ago!) dont think the paints ever dried too! I am enjoying relearning airfix/revell and others, model making! Plus I have boughta compressor, airbrush and paints, thinners, cleaners etc... Having said that, my first couple of builds were, yes, Airfix 1;72 Spitfire Mk2a and Airfix 1;72 BF 109E ...But a self induced panic attack resulted in the fact that I shamedly hand painted them 😞 Just building up the confidence, Honest.. Thats another great point with S G & Son video builds, he actually gives tips along the journeyof ALL his builds, Such as the Ratio of paint to thinner, P.S.I. setting and even the needle size! Thank you very very much, Not sure if you realise howmuch you have cheered upthe likes of me (I'm sure there are others out there in a similat condition! I am no longer very mobile but this hobby suits my predicament. Plus I Love hearing those little snippets of wisdom along the way! Iechyd da!

Whenever I had a kit with old decals, I would use a new #11blade and cut around the entire decal leaving a small amount of the yellowed clear paint to help with positioning. Also I would use hot water to soften the decal. Hotter than usual. Once the decal was in place then all I had left to cut away was the small piece of yellowed clear coat. This worked a majority of the time as long as the water was close to boiling around 200 degrees. I know this is extra work but the results I had was worth it. But this was back in the 60's and 70's. Anyway, I thought I'd pass it along because I truly enjoy your videos.

Thanks for sharing your honest opinion. You're right about your hobby. If it stops being fun, start a new model. Revell decals are often poor to begin with, and don't get better with age. Your builds and dioramas are beautiful.

Well, the Revell decals from the late 90s aren't nearly as bad as the decals from old ESCI kits, those *do not* stand the test of time! 🙄

We don't even see them only you know they are there! My Dad taught me that and it's true. You have an amazing talent, don't knock yourself. 1999 wasn't *that* long ago but certainly a different era, this a really nice kit that was part of their (sadly) short lived Pro Modeler line. Those decals are okay, tape the sheet to a window and do the sunlight trick.

I built the original moldings in 1966 under the Monogram action series along with the F-88 shooting star. Of course there where no photo etch parts or such fancy instruction but it was still a fun couple of builds.

Well at least the ladder looks great. :) You probably already know this, but when you run into a decal breaking up, hitting the sheet with a coat of clear spray will usually help the rest of them hold together.
@SteamGeezerUK
@SteamGeezerUK 5 жыл бұрын
I tried that - it really didn't help. It was strange really, because the decals really didn't look that bad, but no matter what I did, the colour ones just crumbled. I was going to get a set of aftermarket decals, but they would have cost more than I paid for the model :-)

I understand music is subjective and whatever I use won't be to everyone's taste, which is why I tend to avoid using music while I'm actually speaking and only have it while the subtitles are up. That way, if you have a preference, you can turn the volume down on this and listen to something else. Thanks again for watching and for the feedback. I appreciate it.

I'm working on a fury biplane right now and recently got into using Alclad paints. I needed to use three different shades of aluminum because of the plane being part fabric part metal, so masking it all up and painting it was quite a hassle. When I had finished and sprayed the Alclad gloss klear kote, the metallic look of the paint went away and dark spots began appearing in the paint mainly on the wings and underside. How were you able to maintain the metallic look of the Alclad paints when you applied the gloss klear kote?
@SteamGeezerUK
@SteamGeezerUK 3 жыл бұрын
I have gloss Klear but I very rarely use it. If I want to maintain the shine I make sure the lacquer is well and truly set, leave it a couple of hours at least, and then go over it with Tamiya X-22 gloss. I'll do some experiments with different varnishes on Alclad lacquers and see what happens.

Great video! I own a bottle of AK interactive Xtreme Metal Aluminium but it really stinks. I'd like to get Alclad's paint but I want to know if it smells better or worse. The AK is enamel and I mainly use Tamiya acrylics so I have no experience with lacquers. So would it smell stronger than AK or not? thanks, Nathan
@SteamGeezerUK
@SteamGeezerUK 5 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't know. I don't recall it ever smelling that bad, but the cellulose thinner I use to clean the brush with is quite pungent. Use anything lacquer based in a well ventilated environment.

Curious, do you remove the paint from the mating surfaces before gluing? Thanks.
@SteamGeezerUK

Not usually, no. I tend to use weld-bond glues like Tamiya Extra Thin, which I've found works just as well whether the surface is painted or not.

Nice kit, and nicely done. Shame about the decals--apparently even the wax warmer couldn't help. There have been many really good kits I have not bought/built, simply because the subject matter did not appeal. Sounds like you ran up against that. You may have revealed that at the start when you said you didn't particularly like building jet aircraft models...maintaining enthusiasm is critical for persevering in a hobby!

Its quite annoying the scale with military vehicles the 1.48 in plane and ships boats etc are bigger than the standard 1.35 we tank n armored vehicle guys build but when you think your buying a 1.48 tank thinking shes gonna be a good size its smaller than the 1.35 that's the part I think is off putting sometimes your questioning if a 1.48 now is going to be the bigger scale in any kit now, so tend to stick to what I know I'm building I'm gonna start a plane soon for the first time but not to sure what one something old I'd love a canvas double wing like something from ww1 or maybe u2 spyplane for a first plane build, any suggestions?

Ironically I was ready to turn to this kit as a “break” from a piece of skat kit from Russia that is beating my hide at the moment. First, your model here looks really nice and realistic in all aspects. I am sorry you did not enjoy it. What specifically did you dislike about the kit? In 1/48 scale, which kit gave you the most modeling “fun” whilst turning into a good rendition of the real thing? Thank you again!!
