So jealous of this build. The attention to detail is awesome and going the extra mile like the fuel cell for the diesel heater. Which is why I am confused by the janky table that hangs off the ceiling. You said you like it but it would drive me crazy.
@BeRAD

Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! Lots of people have said that until they came in and used the space and realized how annoying a leg or support underneath it would be. Would not be good to have $10k in computer and camera on there and accidentally kick a leg….or just have it be in the way when hanging out. You really don’t even notice it when you’re sitting in the seat. I get it’s hard to believe but I’d absolutely do it again. sometimes the unconventional things are necessary. Everything is a trade off and you gotta weight the pros and cons. Another pro is the weight. Bed already weighs 120lb. Didn’t wanna add more structure and weight to it lol.
@BeRAD
@BeRAD Жыл бұрын
But thank you! Yeah I’m really happy with how it all turned out. Everything feels very convenient, accessible, easy to use. And of course built well. I have little concern about components failing. And if they do, everything is designed to be easy to fix or maintain.

I love the idea installing bathroom in the back of the van.. its like you can wash in mudroom so dirt did not come in living area. What about installing toolbox / workbench and awning at the back of van.. good job anyw🎉
@BeRAD
@BeRAD Жыл бұрын
I have a lugaloo bucket I use that works great. And yes that’s why I have the back all water tight and separated from the front. Can make a mess and keep living space clean. I haven’t felt the need for an awning yet. Easy enough to o just sit inside with the garage open.
@BeRAD
@BeRAD Жыл бұрын
Also don’t believe in toolboxes in vans. Well not a fixed one. I like to be able to take them out easily to where I’m working. Saves a lot of walking in and out of the van! And usually I borrow garage space at friends so having my own tools mobile is great.

On your batteries, you hooked up the connecting wires on each side of the battery terminal. You should change it so that BOTH wires are on the same side so that unnecessary current is not passing through the terminal.

I'm not sure about the logic of trusting a cheap diesel heater but not trusting the plastic fuel can that comes with it. But hey - you're dad is awesome and I wouldn't say no either to that fuel cell. Looks sweet as. Looking forward to seeing how the bikes get loaded etc. Thanks for sharing! Ringo
@BeRAD
@BeRAD Жыл бұрын
No reason not to trust it. Haven’t heard of a single issue with one of the heaters in terms of safety that wasn’t a factor of improper use or installation. There are so many of them out there. Not saying it won’t break down one day but that’s not a big deal. Replace the whole thing for the price of repairing one of the expensive ones! The tank isn’t a concern if trust…it’s just to small. And the aluminum cell was the only thing I could find that made any sense for adding a proper fill port in the outside, and being the right shape and size for mounting. Also adding the fittings was nice when there are already threads on the tank for the AN fittings.

Thank you for sharing your works to the public, my question is, why waste space for keeping the dirt bike inside? they are most of the time dirty, I think you can keep them outside on the back of your van on sort of secure brackets. over all your job is great I appreciate your time and efforts.

I have daddy’s tools and knowledge, not daddy’s money. But even without his tools, I’d get the job done just in a more frustrating way. A drill press is cheap and there are other ways to do get all the other custom components done.

Ballpark $25-30k in materials. I was able to use a lot of shit my dad had laying around. Screws, plumbing, electrical, etc. that would get it closer to the $30k. And all retail prices…of course I had the numerous sponsors. That’s factoring I’m if I had to pay for all of that. I’ll get an official number at some point.

What do you do with wet and/or muddy stuff? Bikes, Boots, Clothes, Gloves etc.? Do you have things to scrape the mud off, dedicated room to hang stuff to dry where it's easy to wipe clean if they're dirty/muddy? I am currently on restoring my own van, and then have to build it to haul bikes and make a bed in it, and that's a thing that is keeping me thinking atm. "Dirt management" so to say
@BeRAD
@BeRAD Жыл бұрын
Bikes, not a concern. Let them dry and drip onto floor then sweep away when dry. Gear usually ends up hanging from handlebars and seat or footpegs to air dry enough to put in laundry bag. Wet boots end up in front of the diesel heater vent if it’s cold. Once dry they go back near the bikes. I’ve had no issue with keeping things tidy! My living are no matter what always says dirt and mud free. Shoes off in the door well when you come in.

I would have done a lot of things different, but it is your van and it fits your need. I would absolutely not hang the table from straps, it was a way too tacky solution in a brand new van.
@BeRAD
@BeRAD Жыл бұрын
See above comment about the straps. I wouldn’t change it at this point! Pros outweigh the cons! It’s the only table I’ve seen in a van that’s actually sturdy and comfy to use haha

this is an awesome build. 1 of those near perfect builds but tough call on if i could do it myself financially and skill/equipment to do all the things you have done. It's not as cool but you can get a toyhauler or since i have a f350 just have a truck camper and bike hitch on the back and go. not as stealthy as your van would be and the bike would be exposed.
@BeRAD
@BeRAD Жыл бұрын
90% of it was done with a drill press, hand drill, and skill saw. Just LOTS of time. You could definitely do it with minimal equipment. Maybe just less “engineered” on things like the diesel tank haha

Great questions! In episode 2 or 3 there’s video of the tool i used. Electric shears! Magnets were cheap Amazon ones. I used on on top and one on bottom of cabinet. They’re very sturdy. Never come open. I’ll get into more detail in the walkthrough for sure.
