The thing I love most about your videos is that you are never afraid to say "I have no idea how this works". As a jc mechanical engineering student, I learn all theory which makes me nervous because I have no hands on knowledge. Your videos make me want to take things apart even if I'll have hardly any idea what I'm looking at. Thank you so much Jeremy!

Hey Jeremey, there are "fingers" that grab the retention knob on the end of the tool taper. They are under tension from a spring or a series of belvill washers. There is a pneumatic cylinder that actuates and pushes on the springs and releases the fingers to remove the tool. Great find! Jason

I was a professional woodworker for over 25yrs. The thing I enjoyed more than building furniture and cabinets was finding deals on awesome industrial machines and restoring them to better than new condition. I am not disabled but spend as much time as possible woodworking. My CNC helps with a lot of the labor. I'd love to find out more on Solidworks. I appreciate the video series.... it gives me lots to dream about!!

Great video!!! I think you have achieved awesomeness. I have been a Solidworks user since the mid 90s and my first project proved it's worth. I designed a grip to alleviate tunnel carpal. Everything was compound curves. After hand making the prototype and getting approval, an .SLA was sent to the toolmaker and an injection mold made. When the tool arrived, we put it into the press and started shooting parts. It only took three shots to start making good parts. The first production run was 500,000 parts. From concept to sales took only 20 weeks. It made me a true believer in 3D solid modeling. Thanks for all this......

I really enjoy watching you progress on this project! Due to medical hurdles, I've been grounded pretty much for over a year from pursuing a miniature version of your project. I was given parts of an eye-laser surgery unit with a small X-Y table that I want to convert into a laser engraver. For a bigger project, like a plasma cutter unit or CNC router, I have two 16ft ball screws waiting to be repurposed. Good luck and keep at it! Thanks for sharing!

In 2000 I started saving for a CnC plasma cutter, by 2004 I had saved up enough for a Hypertherm 60 amp torch, 100 gal air compressor, and a PlasmaCam 4'x4' CnC table. The whole setup cost me just around 13k. I'll bet your entire setup cost HALF. so I am thinking 7.5k. I went through the same learning curve you did, and I giggled and screamed when my first cuts came off the machine.

It is not vacuum gripping a tool, but tool release mechanism. It is more kin to air quick connect. When air is pressurized, a piston pushes on a spring loaded mechanism to release grip on tool. Balls gripping ISO tool release mechanism, and pulling on it when mechanism deactivates (no air). Also, 2 valves are probably needed because of amount of flow/pressure change, to actuate faster/more powerful. Great video and great machine! Keep up the good work!

All good. Great machine. Really appreciate how you work out what you need and then get something that does the job running at 50% power. Also interesting to see what happens when when you state a problem out loud as opposed to just thinking about it. Not sure how often it has happened to me that I see a solution only when I'm describing it in words (and when I have used similar words describing the problem in my mind. Thanks for the video. Cheers, David

That looks like a MT40 taper tool holder. That's a super nice motor. And 9hp is insane. That would make for a good sized cnc metal milling machine. I love the surpluses and auctions. I spent my early life in those places. I've got a shop full of great used machines. Lawrence Livermore labs used to have a Sunday auction that will never be seen again. Deals from heaven.

Do you mean BT40? MT is a morse taper designation, which I doubt that has.
@Gkuljian

@@procyonia3654 I meant NMTB 40, or CAT40. Now that I think of it, I believe BT40 is also the same thing.
@procyonia3654
@procyonia3654 4 жыл бұрын
BT is the metric standards, chances are its BT because those are balanced for high speed, probably a 30 taper though due to size and speeds used on machines this size. Nmtb and ISO of have the same 7/24 taper but do not have a pull stud, this has an ATC distinction so it has a pull stud/draw tube if it has the 7/24 taper style holder. CAT holders are unbalanced because of the short/long key so generally not spec'd for machines with high speed spindles (which I assume this has) Sorry not trying to be pedantic, the goofy machine tool industry has weird ass standards.
@Gkuljian
@Gkuljian 4 жыл бұрын
@@procyonia3654 Right, there are distinctions like flanges and pull studs. I tend to lump them all together. I've got a Deckel FP-3 I bought from a surplus back in 1992. It's manual.

I set-up spindles like these regularly. Some of them have internal valves, some don't. Typically you'll have one or two air input lines for the tool clamp, and you'll have one for the taper blowoff/spindle blowoff. There should be an internal zero speed sensor that will not allow the tool to unclamp if the spindle is turning. If it doesn't, you should set it up with an external zero speed sensor. ETA: awesome project, very jealous of your machine.

Hi Jeremy. I’ve been watching your channel for ages. I’m into all the same stuff. Great seeing the latest developments. My guess for the cost of the machine is...$3800. Then with all the additional costs fixing it up.....er....$650. Plus cost of plasma cutter and CNC torch cable. Whatever that works out to be. I’m guessing the software side of things was sponsored. Congratulations. Whatever the cost was, I know it was cheap. My favourite place to shop is the local scrapyard. Kind Regards mate, Rohan
