Brilliant video. There are a huge number of assumptions made by guys who obviously know their stuff, the assumptions being that everyone else knows all the tech stuff :-) To literally go through every step of the process, explaining everything as you go, is a rarity. This was a whole new experience for me, and this video helped make it a lot less painful.

People have already commented but I will because I gotta. Great video. Informative. BUT! Confusing regarding setting up Raspbian on one sd card and then setting up Retropie on another. I'm sure someone is going to take that sd card with Raspbian (Raspberry OS) and flash Retropie over it thinking they're getting both on one card. For just setting up Retropie you DO NOT need to flash Raspberry OS on your sd card first. Also, if you want a pre-made Retropie image from Arcade Punks you only need that image download to flash (etch) to your card. Retropie is already included with many of those very polished and well designed images.

Thank you for this comment. I was wondering that too. It didn't really make sense to have Pi OS and Retro, at least in my case since they are both their own OS. Also I was confused as to why he wanted a separate SD card to transfer roms. Couldn't you just pop the micro SD into your PC and install them that way?

So can you clear it up for me. My unit came with a 32gb card that already had Respberry Pi OS on it. When I download Retropie I wasnt to use a different sd card? And what size should that care be? And than do I need a completely different sd card for any games I want to download?

I HIGHLY suggest the Argon M.2 case as the case itself is a giant aluminum case with also a small built in fan for active cooling as well. With emulation the fan never spins up to noticeable noise levels and the massive aluminum heatsink keeps it very cool. It also has USB 3.0 to m.2 sata port for adding a SATA m.2 SSD. It also transforms the mirco HDMI to full sized HDMI ports. I've been able to boost my clock speeds to 2.0ghz stably as well. And if you want to make this a media plex using Kodi there is also an IR remote available for this case for $10.

Just wanted to say thanks so much for putting this great video out. I've been wanting to get some kind of retrogaming console together for a while, but didn't really know where to start... I thought about getting one of the miniconsoles and hacking it, or buying an old PC and using that, but when I saw this video I was hooked. Super informative, entertaining and thorough. And now I'm getting very little sleep because I'm playing through Final Fantasy III again. Thanks a million!

I just wanted to point something out. 🙂 Cartridge based games are referred to as roms. (ROM = read only memory) Optical disc based games CDs DVDs, Blu rays, as commonly referred to as ISOs, not roms a ISO is a optical piece of media IE not a cartridge. Have a good day 🙂 Also the video is very helpful and well thought out.

So, I'm very new to this whole Raspberry Pi & RetroPie thing. I am not very knowledgeable about it at all. Recently, I purchased the LABISTS Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Complete Starter PRO Kit with 32GB Micro SD Card (4GB RAM). I was finally able to get it set up and I was able to play a few games on it last night (5/26/21). The main reason why I decided to go with a Raspberry Pi was because I'm a child of the 80s and 90s. I wanted to have a system that let me play retro video games such as arcade games and console games (Genesis & SNES) from that time period. The problem I've run into now is that some of the roms work fine and others don't. I can't figure out why this is happening. I have heard that arcade roms use MAME, etc . . . Some of the arcade and 16-bit console roms are working, but other ones are not. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix this latest issue that I'm facing? Thanks.

Might be $300 still, but even though its still that high, you get every gaming sysytem known to man and just about every game. While with the Switch you only get Nintendo games, oh and if you want to pay for the subscription, you could get the older nintendo consoles and the sega console. So in the long run the Pi is by far the better way to go.

Nice tutorial, but I think you should've made it more clear that you don't need to set up Raspbian if you're only going to be using RetroPie. You can just wipe the card included in the kit and put RetroPie on that. Also, the 8GB model is probably overkill for this purpose.

The operating system is stored on a MicroSD card. The reason two are used in this video is that the first came pre-loaded with Raspian, which is a common operating system used on Raspberry Pi builds. It’s kind of like what you’d use on a typical desktop computer. The other MicroSD card had the RetroPie operating system. You don’t need both if don’t want one of them

There’s no need for anything above a 2 GB model. DC doesn’t even go over 1GB of RAM. Maybe if you’re compiling something or using it as a desktop. For a regular pi build only go for the 2 GB and below unless you want to future proof or something. Also, I’d go for the raspberry pi power supply as many of the “kit” psu’s will give you under voltage warnings.

It's always better to start with a fresh retropie image right from the official retropie homepage. This way you have total control of what you want to add and can troubleshoot when stuff goes haywire. With the Gerber baby punks images you don't know what's on there and don't have a way to really troubleshoot with all the hackery and baby bottles going on lol.

There was a Supreme Court ruling in 1988 that basically can be interpreted as follows: You are allowed to copy the data straight from your own media as a copy. This is challenging for old Atari cartridges and such, but not impossible. There are devices you can get to transfer the data. ROMS accessed online are not legal. It's not really a gray area.

The one thing im not 100% on is the other part with arcadepunks. So what I download from arcadepunks is a replacement for retropie but with games already installed and everything set up?

Can you advise for a new pi user if I should use retropi, bato, lakka, or recalbox? Is any of them truly better then the other?
