In today's episode, I'm building a MASSIVE workbench to get my dream garage organized. Small parts and hardware organization has been a real challenge for me in the workshop, so I'm fabricating and 3D printing my way into the craziest workbench I've ever made.

Nicework.Adding blocks in the corners to fit inside of the tool box rims would have been simpler. You could even add screws through the rim of the toolbox into the blocks fo security.

This is a pretty solid little workbench. While once you figure out how it comes together, it is physically Easy to assemble kzfaq.infoUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh by yourself. But the diagrams explaining the steps are really pretty bad. I could not get the handle pins in all the way despite multiple attempts, so I just used a screw I had on hand for the 2nd handle. I could not get the first pin in further or pull it back out. You are supposed to hammer it in, but I had no leverage and the handle is plastic and I did not want to risk breaking it. I will get a lot of use out of the bench because of the convenient size and height. It does fold up nicely for storage. They even explain how to fold it so you don't get pinched...that is important!

Good reliable gear! I am recovering from health issues and get out to my shop a couple of times a week. I recently gutted the shop portion and found the floor. Now am putting up walls for hanging stuff on (that is a technical term haha). Anyway, great job on the shop so far. If you were looking for deeper drawers, cut out the bottom of a shallow drawer and bolt it to the drawer below. That way you keep the look of the drawer front while getting more capacity.

This seems like a really good idea.... You could fold the bottom down and rivet it to the sidewalls of the lower drawers. That would make use of the upper pair of drawer slides for weight capacity
@legallyfree2955
@legallyfree2955 Жыл бұрын
I have done similar to this, I cut the bottom out of a drawer then put in 1/2 inch plywood "U" shape nearly the height of both drawers and screwed that on the sides. This nicely completely covered up my very messy cut so I dont cut my hand open every time I stick it in there. I couldn't use a square shape because I couldn't open the drawers fully and place it in so I wound up cutting the back off so it's just a U now. Of course this means I lost an inch of drawer width but not a big deal for what I was doing. I also cut the bottom out of the top drawer with an angle grinder before removing the foam base from the second drawer. That was also a mistake.

Thanks Fred! Routing the top was worth the effort and mess. The bins are from Schaller, they're what people use in pro cabinets. I actually reached out to them about producing a run of several thousand 1.5" deep bins specifically for the Harbor Freight boxes but they weren't interested... I also looked into developing the tooling to injection mold them myself but this seemed like the easiest alternative. I've got black, and red/white/blue hats in stock!

Something to consider, it does technically weaken the work surface by routing out the bottom. If you're hammering a lot and using the bench for heavy work, there's a chance it can split at the seam. I have other benches for that kind of work, but just as a caution 👍

@GrindhousePerformance
@GrindhousePerformance Жыл бұрын
I picked these specifically because of the drawer arrangement and width. With the top narrow drawers I think you'll run out of physical space before you hit the weight limit of the drawer slides. If the drawers were a lot larger they'd get extremely heavy full of hardware and that's not really what these style toolboxes are designed for. Being 8 drawers, I'm planning to have the bottom 2 deep drawers be overflow storage for the 6 top drawers. Drawer 4-6 has enough height for adding a second set of slides if I overload them. I also liked the symmetrical look between everything, a lot of the wider boxes have a wide set of drawers and a smaller one. I'm also only putting hardware & supplies in this box. If you're also storing tools there might be better options 👍

I got a 56" and a 6-ft butcher block top. Cut plywood to fit inside the lip, just a bit proud so I won't damage the sheet metal if I hammer on the butcher block. It allowed me to move the top around for a few days to figure out the overhang L-R and front-back before I committed to bolting it. I also bolted bumper hitches to the underside to temporarily attach small vises, bench grinder, and a belt & disk sander. You don't have to clear off the bench to make room for a bench tool!
@GrindhousePerformance
@GrindhousePerformance Жыл бұрын
Really like the bumper hitch idea, did you have to shim the tool stands from having a bunch of play in them?
@aleghart
@aleghart Жыл бұрын
@@GrindhousePerformance (Not sure where my reply went. Maybe the Amazon links were causing a problem. ) The bumper hitch already had a bolt tapped in. A quick turn with a wrench stops the wobble. Mounted a parrot vise to a winch plate. Grinder and belt/disc sander are on a 2x12 first, then a winch plate. Eventually will have 2 small 4-5" vises and a grinder with wire and buffing wheels. I just saw Harbor Freight makes a hitch-mount vise now. Worth a look for me. Also looking at making some kind of 'shelf'-like thing out of strut channel to dock the mounted equipment when not used. They're a little tipsy if I put them on a shelf or on my table saw.

New subscriber as well. Love the workbench. I’m not sure what year the Z is but I had a 75 back in high school. I had the racing fenders, bbs wheels, Newman Haas paint scheme and the number 75 on the door. Loved that car. My dad bought it new and I bought it from him in 84.

I'm in the process of working through storage options for my tools and parts is something I've been thinking about for a while. I think I've decided on the US General boxes as well because of their quality & price. I might have to take some of your ideas for parts storage.

Great Video, I am so glad I came across this video. I was looking for ideas for my set up and this really helped. You ever think about picking up a band-saw? It would help cut those boxes in 1 cut without having to rotate it. Look on marketplace you can get one cheap. You can also use it to cut metal and whatnot.
@GrindhousePerformance
@GrindhousePerformance Жыл бұрын
I really wanted to make my bandsaw work. I had done test cuts with pretty much everything I have with a blade on it and seemed like the table saw with a fine tooth blade had the cleanest edges. My bandsaw would start melting the edge halfway through cutting them when I tried it out

@@GrindhousePerformance ahh, i forget not everyone has a variable speed motor on theirs. I ripped out my ac motor and put treadmill motor on mine to avoid burns and dulling blades by going to fast. Still is a great idea a and it worked for you. You gained a follower!

Yes yes yes! This is what I'm looking for. I've got a 2000sqf garage and one of my back walls I want to build something similar. I however want to be able to pull the carts out from under the countertop and wheel them over to a workstation or welding table or anywhere in the shop I'm working. I can't get 72" tool chests here so I'll likely need to do smaller ones like yours. Like 10 of them or something. Good to have a visual idea from your video on what that might look like. I subscribed and would like to see more 👍

@shiftradition Look up STORLOCK . Don't know where you live or what your budget it, but you can customize Thierry drawers. It may save you some time. Unless you like doing things yourself. The drawer depth was a deal breaker for me. STORLOCK has dividers. This guy down played all the work he put into these. I have been there to a degree. Again he did A LOT of work . Not to mention the Brain work . This guy is no dummy. I think he will do very well in his endeavors.

That’s a lot of work … but in the end it looks great. BUT, you should have waited cuz now Harbor Freight has the 34”x23” 6 drawer full bank service cart that you could have used for the bins and probably not needed to cut them down to small little shorties … you get an A for effort for sure.
