Peter Liljedahl's book Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics is being used in many math classrooms these days. But what material should you have students do at the boards (aka non-permanent vertical surfaces) and what should students do on their own? Here's the help you need to take your ideas and sort them into what should be for preloading and what should be used in groups - all in the Building Thinking Classrooms style. I will be walking through building a Solving Systems of Equations by Substitution for an Algebra 1 class for the example.
In this video, I talk about my thought process in creating a lesson in the Building Thinking Classrooms-style. With a little planning and a couple of tips, you'll get in great shape quick!
I'll talk about:
00:00 Introduction
00:59 Review prior knowledge needed for the lesson
01:35 Warm Up Questions
02:53 First step for your Building Thinking Classrooms lesson
04:00 Step up the difficulty
05:50 Lesson Goal
07:12 Debrief back at their seats
08:05 Practice in notes.

Planning algebra 1 lessons for solving systems of equations by substitution as we will determine which parts should be in the warm up of the lesson and which parts should be the main ideas. I also talk some about how to summarize things.

Apologies for deleting the question about whiteboard dimensions. Totally accidental. Each section is probably 4-5 feet wide. Some of it depends on the width of the bigger board. ETA: the calendar boards on top of the whiteboard behind me are 2' x 4'.
