tracheolis is a genius. I've been wondering about a project like this and how we wouldn't have to lift a finger for our own homes to self-ventilate. It's an amazing concept that I love so much.

This is a fantastic concept to be coupled with photovoltaics. Ecxess heat from the cells can be absorbed by the structure on which they're mounted, causing it to change its shape, thus rearranging the cells, thus sustaining optimal incidental angle of the cells to sunlight across the arc of the sun.

It's exactly what leaves do when it's too hot out and there's not a lot of water. They curl inwards so they don't absorb as much sun and use more of their water.

I see this as an outer layer... just a breathable skin. You have common walls behind, but walls collect and release moisture from rain and ambient humidity. also, you can have regular windows behind, or skylights, that can be opened from the inside when desired and letting air in and out. I'm just randomly thinking here, but I think the concept is really good and design-wise, very evolved.

In all the examples it lets in more light the hotter it gets. That's the opposite purpose of shading. Makes more sense for ventilation and pretty sculptures. It must sound incredible in that structure when all those pieces are expanding.

Alternatively imagine reverse engineering Tracheolis to close instead. This would be great for fire stricken areas as the Petals would cause an armadillo effect by encapsulating the Building as a form of protection.

Well, this is a very interesting project, but I have few questions. Firstly, since these are thermal bi-metals which are sensitive and are good conductors of heat, so how effective are these metals films are in thermal insulation. For instance, the situation where the temperature is not hot as the metal sheet tends to curl, and what would the temperature difference from being under this installation to outside the surface. Having being said that these metals do radiate heat so how comfortable is it staying under this breathing/shading device or in a enclosure made out of this materials?

+Jesse VK Nedunuri , i got the same question in my mind !, if only the property of the of the metal that reflects heat could change to trapping it down ?!?
@kummer45
@kummer45 6 жыл бұрын
Thermal comfort is thrown out of the window completely. Thermal bridges are going to elevate the temperature of the interior space unless you encapsulate in a double pane window the dynamic metallic skin. Otherwise the heat will be intolerable.

interesting idea she work with same idea that jean nouvel use it in institut du monde arabe paris where he use what we call it in french mocharabia its arabic system used in past for comfort where he made amazing system where he control the day lighting my question when she said trying to prduce window systemand she spoke about the heat game said that these metals do radiate heat so how comfortable is it staying under this breathing/shading device or in a enclosure made out of this materials?

Conducting heat within a given material is different to exchanging heat between materials, so its probably very likely that a third material that remains static in shape and is built at a geometry that allows it give off heat to moving air as fast as it can absorb it (any number of metals that can be formed at one terminus into increasing surface are with the necessary incidental angles to a passing fluid medium-air) can be coupled with it, since its effectlively opening hundreds of valves, it can filter light whilst manipulating a heat removing convection current through itself. But I think it would have to contained within some kind of cavity.

Unless this material is a very poor radiator and thus reflects solar radiation very well, it will only be beneficial in rather specific situations. If the motion is regulated by air temperature it could be effective, but if the bimetal activates whenever the sun shines enough to sufficiently elevate the material's temperature, it could activate prematurely, well before the interior of such a structure would desire ventilation. This could perhaps be better applied to the north side of buildings with thermally absorbent south sides. With less thermal mass than most urban surfaces, this could likely lower the amount of night time "heat island radiation," but seems likely to increase heat transfer from solar radiation to air in the day. Further explanation of how this could be applied to actually decrease air conditioning would be interesting. It looks cool, but I'm skeptical of its actual functionality.

Possibly it may apply for ventilation. When heated, metal curls open up to allow Air to enter and to circulate. When it is cold outside, metal curls will close to maintain the heat inside.

if the idea is to replicate the human body in architecture, why not look at the way the skin regulates it's temperature: sweating. I imagine a gravity fed water feature system, working similar to a men's urinal, acting as a waterfall on sun-facing sides of a building. this could cool the windows and potentially save on window cleaning costs. perhaps it could also be used to tell the time, or piece of artistic design. something similar to this Japanese waterfall art: watch?v=gusJeslMbLc

Interesting but I don't think metal is ideal for lining the outside of structures. More reflected heat in cities, hard to look at, conductive properties etc. Should just have "hinges" of the metal with something photovoltaic between.
