WARNING: SPOILERS FOR SEASON 3 I don't know how I feel about him basically playing himself. Even his hand gestures are the same. Isn't this the sign of a bad actor? And does this explain why his character grew so little over 3 seasons? He really only changed in the second last episode of season 3 in the scene where he decided to be honest with his family. Mickey's character had a great development, but Gus... not so much. I found this a little frustrating, tbh.
@nimeshsingh4943
@nimeshsingh4943 4 жыл бұрын
@@juliz2500 It is frustrating but I guess that's real- everyone focused on Mickey's more obvious noticeable problems and as a reason his got sidelined which is why he didn't improve. Growth is not always linear and gradual and idealistic. I like it. Good realistic show. His problems were still displayed (self-sabotage at work, anger issues) so that last scene wasn't too unrealistic.

Just finished watching the 3 seasons for the second time, and it is one of the nicest series I have seen for years: funny, embarrassing, just so authentic. The depth of it is how muchit is like real life many many times.

The first time I watched this series, I appreciated some moments, but dismissed a lot of it as hyper-juvenile, etc. On second viewing, see how deceptively brilliant and emotionally deep this show is. On the surface, it’s a romantic comedy about a couple learning to work through conflict. However, there’s a lot more here. The evolution of Micky is so gracefully done; so much of her transformation is internal and, therefore, subtle. The way that she develops empathy is by feeling compassion for the really unlikeable Dr. Greg, because she is/was just like him. Her involuntarily empathetic reaction to him is powerful and perfectly matches her character and her development. By seeing through Micky’s eyes, we , too, develop more compassion for the unlovable, characters/traits, in the show, as well as those in ourselves and others. The humor and the poignance come from a very honest place. Cannot rave enough about this piece of brilliance.

After watching it a second time, the character I loved the most is Susan Cheryl the director. Actually, the whole time she is genuinely looking out for Gus and wants to get him into a writing position. I think why he's a teacher on set is because is to bring him down to Earth after the Ridley Scott thing. She offers him a chance at the writing room, and promptly schools him when he goes off the rails. She tries to sleep with him to see if he's a good person and not trying to sleep his way to the top. Everything her character does is actually for Gus's benefit as she wants to build him up as she knows how good he actually is. He just needs some balance in the way he works.

It is so funny she was mentioned to be a real candidate for a nomination in Emmys for both Mickey (Love) and Mimi-Rose (Girls Season 4) but she didn't get nominated for none of these two performances. Not that award ceremonies are relevant as they used to but it would still be great if she received the appreciation she deserves.

I was really upset when I realised there were only going to be three seasons of this show... Because there aren't really any tv shows that truly explore all the little dysfunctions that happen in relationships. Most tv shows gloss over it all or make it seem too after-school-special for it to be really real. I was looking forward to seeing them get closer month by month but all of a sudden it jumped ahead to them being together for six months and everything was perfect and lovey dovey and I was like, what the hell happened? Then I realised the show was cancelled and I was just disappointed. Because some of us really suck at relationships and we kind of aren't really represented much. But oh well. Shit happens I guess. The show was short lived like most of my relationships.
@Sacryfy
@Sacryfy 5 жыл бұрын
You can't really call it cancelled if they mutually decided to have the conclusion at the end of season 3. I agree, it felt a little bit rushed in the end. but on the other hand, I feel like it was just the right amount of relationship dynamics portrayed, with them having arguments, learning from these discussions and making stuff better.. I don't know how longer they could have kept up an interesting show with this recipe and how much they still would have had to tell without getting over the top or cheesy (when they would have had kids for example). So I was also sad it ended but at least you will never have had the feeling - like you have with most tv shows - that they overdid it with the amount of seasons. So even though it kind of got rushed, they managed to finish their story in a satisfying way.

What an amazing interview. I loved the one they did with Gillian after season 1 was released, and this one was great too. It's a real trick, the way this interviewer kind of lets his subjects drive the show while intervening ever so slightly just to keep them on track, as a result of which it feels like we get a real insight into the weirdness that is the Paul Rust/Gillian Jacobs dynamic. People seem to either love or hate PaulRust. Interesting. I found it frustrating that his character had so little development in the show but now I can see why: he plays himself.

This show is good because both of them go good together but they are both kind of bad people. Mickey is self destructive, selfish, and is addicted to chaotic situations cause of her childhood and will self sabotage a relationship that is starting to go good cause she is addicted to chaos with her one boyfriend she cheated on him, her ex was a coke head who would not leave her alone. One boyfriend seemed relatively normal and that freaked her out so she sabotaged it by cheating on him, and with her ex he was the chaotic situation she was addicted to cause she is self destructive. And when she could not handle a difficult hurdle with Gus she started sleeping with her ex boyfriend so even though she is trying to work on her addictions, she has to work on her self destructive personality. And Gus is no better, he only cares about what is beneficial to him and his emotional comfort.He wants to mold people to his ideals and when they are not what he wants them to be or they have a different opinion then he does, he will either ignore the fact that he is alienating the other person or he will basically give you the cold shoulder and do a 'fade away.' He 'acts' like a nice guy but he really is not, he is kind of a dick. With his ex girlfriend he completely ignored the fact that she was pushing him away and vocally told him over and over again that she did not want to be with him anymore, and he told her that basically she did not know what she wanted and they can work it out. She literally had to lie and say she cheated on him just so she could finally ' get out' of the relationship. And when he went out on his first date with Mickey she told him she was not into magic but would give it a try and he kept pushing her to have the same opinion as him even though she was kind of being rude about it all he wanted her to be into something she was not, and he got mad when she had a different view point then he did albeit she got them kicked out cause she is self centered. He could not accept that. And when she said his sing a long get together was ' stupid' rather then talk to her about it like a person, he could not handle the fact that she could not just blindly agree to everything he wants and likes. So he basically acted like she may as well not exist anymore and started sleeping with that woman from Witchita without so much as giving Mickey a reason why he was not talking to her until she got so frustrated with his standoffish, distant, ghosting, it ended up being an explosive argument cause he could not talk to her and accept she was different then him. And when she ran into him getting snacks he kissed her after she basically apologized for being who she was, and he ' forgave' her. The show is good but I would not put them two as an ideal as to what ' love' should be cause they are both terrible and that is what makes the show good.

While I agree with you on most things (yes, both are terrible), I disagree with you with the whole "them not being an ideal as to what 'love' should be". The point of the show is not to portray the perfect relationship that you would see on a rom-com or a happy romance story. The idea is to portray a real honest relationship and a lot of relationship have problems like the ones you just mentioned. Cheating is common, lying is common, being selfish is common and being self destructive is common too. I like both of them as a couple because they are a good honest example of how couples are these days (and it's portrayed without any bullshit). What I mean is that maybe they are not the ideal couple, but they are a great example of a true relationship that makes the audience say "Well, what I have going on with my s/o is similar. Maybe we could pull through like Mickey and Gus".
