“The Handmaid’s Tale” is based on the 1985 novel by Margaret Atwood, and stars Elisabeth Moss as an enslaved ‘handmaid’ forced to give birth for the barren ruling class in a near-future dystopia where the authoritarian theocracy has replaced America as we know it. Dowd plays the cruel Aunt Lydia, a zealot who oversees the handmaids by any means necessary, including physical and emotional torture and abuse. Join Dowd as she discusses the show and the final season of "The Leftovers," in which she also appears as Patti Levin on the HBO supernatural drama.
BUILD is a live interview series like no other-a chance for fans to sit inches away from some of today’s biggest names in entertainment, tech, fashion and business as they share the stories behind their projects and passions. Every conversation yields insights, inspiration and plenty of surprises as moderators and audience members ask questions. It all happens several times a day live and live-streamed on BUILDseries.com.

The fact she didn’t win an Emmy for The Leftovers is criminal.

I DID see that protection and parenting feeling Aunt Lydia felt for the girls. She takes care of them on that twisted dark way she has, and it gets pretty clear by the end of the season. She's someone with a lot a emptyness, and she fill it by shepperding those girls. I'm not justifying her, but I dissagree when he says "she's not protective, she's a saddist", because Ann said "oh, I'm sorry", like "Sorry my performance wasn't that good" and NO, ANN, YOUR AUNT LYDIA IS PERFECT cause she not only shows a blindness due to her religion, but also shows attachment, fragility, and a deep concern for the girls. In her own sick way, of course.

you're right! especially in the last episode, when the one-eyed girl is not allowed into the ceremony and she wants to get her in as well, you see how she truly loves her (but in a sick way) :D I also just love her eyes. They're so warm and friendly which makes everything else about her performance even scarier.

I have never heard a person talk the way she does. Instead of narrating a story, she does little bits until you think: "wait? where are we? what is this about?" and then BOOM in the end she connects everything with very few clever words, like "no. is a complete sentence"

I've never once doubted Aunt Lydia's love for her girls. From the very beginning, Ann conveys it without words even. The character is so complex, the torment dancing in her expression alone, so obviously questioning her own actions. But Aunt Lydia has to survive in this apocalyptic world as well. If she doesn't do her job she could just as easily be hanging off the wall. No one is exempt. Aunt Lydia doesn't want any harm to come to these girls. She is doing everything she believes is right to keep them safe and alive. That is her agenda. I've never once viewed her strict brutality towards her girls as sadism. I find it disheartening that many audience members view it that way. The complexity of this role is unmatched.

Woah...what a pity. That the degrading woman could not admit that she was wrong, that she disappointed herself, that she wanted to heal. It’s like the character in “The Reader” saying, “They were our prisoners.” (So we had to lock them up and let them burn to death.) Fear is something to be conquered. We sometimes must demand what we need, when we would rather not. We would prefer to ask, or even to suffer privately. I love you Ann Dowd!❤️

Not really. Kathy Bates takes on more "hammier" attention getting characters. These two are nothing alike. Ann D. has a more "every woman" quality to her which tends to work in her favor. She's more capable of melding more, disappearing more into roles than Kathy Bates does. Love both ladies, btw.

Why and what is this accent? She was born and raised in America, but yet in every role and even here talking in an interview, she has this, very strange British-like but also Southern American accent! That’s the only way I can describe it. Where did this come from? Someone posted earlier that her voice was “comforting”. I don’t see it that way at all. It’ sounds pretentious and made up. If she was “putting on” this accent for the role, I would understand. But, I’ve now seen her on The Leftovers, Handmaid’s Tale and in this interview with this same strange accent! If she’s such a great actress, why can’t she change this disturbing affect?

This interviewer is WRONG. Dead wrong. We DO see that Lydia loves the girls. We DO see that Lydia has her fucked up opinions, but that she wants what SHE thinks is best for the girls, and that she truly believes she is helping them to be useful to society and to be saved by God for their "sins". Think about it: Aunt Lydia truly does think that the girls were useless and damned for eternity, and now it's her job to "save them", even if it means that she has to be extremely cruel to teach them. The girls are her entire life, and she does care about them. She just has a completely different concept of what kindness is and isn't. In her mind, it would be unkind to let the girls do whatever they wanted, because that would mean the girls would end up on the wall and ultimately suffer in hell for eternity. So, if she has to beat them, or take out one of their eyes to save their eternal souls, she's gonna do it. The interviewer here just doesn't see past the multiple layers here. None of the characters on this show are caricatures. Each person has good and bad in them. Lydia, Fred, and Serena may be the main antagonists, but each of them has moments of compassion and humanity, which is how it is in the real world. Murderers and rapists aren't mean and awful every second of every day. Unless someone is a complete psychopath, which none of the characters on the show are, they are obviously going to have some good in their hearts. Lydia is a perfect example of a fully-rounded person who believes she is doing what is best, and honestly doesn't know any other way to be. She's so brainwashed by religion that she truly feels she is doing God's work. So in her way, yes, she loves the girls more than anything. The interviewer needs to speak for himself.

She gives me the SHIVERS. Nightmares in fact. I just don't like the way the Series portrays Christianity in a negative light... when currently it is Islam that scares the F out of me, as far as Religious Control of Masses.

But you can see the comparisons with Christianity surely? Controlling women's reproductive cycles. Indoctrination. Anti-gay. Islam have the same problems but you don't live in an Islamic country- you live in a Christian one.
@timothyj1966
@timothyj1966 7 жыл бұрын
hmmm there is a real backlash here in Canada with Christianity... anti-Christian. Our Media puts Isalm on a pedestal and our Fed Gov is making special language in Legislation to make speaking out against Islam a Hate Crime - that is actually an infringement of my Freedom of Speech especially as a Gay man who see young Muslim men staying in the closet and entering arranged marriages. We also have Mosques preaching anti-semitism in Toronto. The Gov removed the Lord's Prayer from Public schools 15 years ago. Those same Public schools have just introduced Prayer Rooms facing East.I see the United Church of Canada as well as the Anglicans ordaining Gay Men and Women and also marrying Gay couples like me...in the actual Church. IF anything in the real World is as dangerous as the Series portrays - it is without a doubt - Islam.
@jayel1471
@jayel1471 7 жыл бұрын
There is a difference between installing prayer rooms and leading a school in a Christian prayer. I would have no problem with Christian prayer rooms either, but schools should be secular places. You can't say that Christianity is fine because Islam is worst, they both have their problems BUT the difference is that we live in Christian countries. I know the far-right like to preach that Islam is taking over but it's not. We will never have Sharia law. We do however have laws influenced by Christianity and that is a problem. Keep your faith in your church and out of public life.

As someone who tries to follow the way that Christ taught us to love and live, I understand you want to defend how it gets misrepresented especially if you are a Christian also following Christ. However I have to ask aren't you even more offended and defensive against those in the US who are misrepresenting Christianity and using it as a political tool ? I'm offended by the media that has fallen for the belief that the GOP represents the only definition of Christianity because they say they do. The media has stopped even trying to consider that millions of American Christians quietly go about Christs business and in so doing have allowed the political right who have redefined Christianity in their own image to claim it without question. ButI if you feel the same way shouldn't you also feel equally or more offended by the churches who have allowed themselves to become redefined as a political tool and have decided to serve either a sincere misguided fundamentalist extreme agenda or are cynically pretending to for political reasons ? The ideology they claim is Christianity is so insidious, judgemental, controlling, politically ambitious and misguided which I say because they clearly despise those Christ calls on us to love and serve , the poor, the sick, the lonely, the imprisoned, the strangers in a strange land as well as despise those that do love and serve them. In addition Christs respect and treatment of his female followers as disciples socially and spiritually equal to his apostles was one of the more radical actions that gained Jesus a great deal of the hostility directed towards him and his radical dangerous ideas. This other interpretation of Christianity as a political servant defines their Christianity as a strict and harsh theology sewn together as a patchwork of bits and pieces of an Old Testament religion , ( not to be confused with Judaism ) that somehow supports the theory that God rewards the righteous with wealth as a sign of His approval and allows poverty and misfortune as a sign of disapproval and a punishment for low moral standards or behavior. Its commonly known as prosperity theology by those who preach it and has little or no similarity with Christs actual teachings. To those who are contemptuous of Christianity and those who preach prosperity, perfection and to judge and hate anything less than that allowing betrayal of everyone and everything else Christ called us to serve and protect, I say go back and read ONLY the red letters in a New Testament that puts Christs actual words in red text. Read ONLY those words every day for a week and you will understand what I'm talking about. If you don't know why the GOP can't claim to represent followers of a Christ forget the rhetoric, go and look up every GOP written and sponsored bill and also every bill they have voted for or against and see who it served. Democrats are far from perfect but they are advocates for born babies and children, maternal health, the poor, hospitality and protection for well vetted strangers victimized and persecuted in their own lands, and more. They are far from perfect and all political parties have corrupt membership the GOP platform their goals and agenda clearly state that they want to allow corporations to put profit above safety regulations that poison children with lead in their drinking water and allow dumping of carcinogens in our streams and lakes killing fish and wildlife to protect profits over people. a thought out policy not a few bad apples sneakily doing bad things as may happen with Democrats even though their policies, bills and laws have people,us humans best interests at heart. Democratic policies, bills and laws are much more in line with what Jesus would do andbecause the GOP policies, bills and laws are much more in line with what the Pharoahs policies for the Jews were or the corrupt Pharisees were in Jesus time.
