In this video I show you how I hacked (modified) my CNC router to
cut parts that it can't do on the table.
With this modification I exponentially increased my CNC routers versatility, with a custom made spacer (not really that difficult to build) I can now machine cut things "over the edge" of my cnc bed.

@@acerjuglans383 unfortunately it won’t help to cut a hole in the bed with this design with center lead screw drive. I certainly would have done if instead of going thru the hassle of making that extender 😆

Brilliant. I just had to cut similar holes in the ends of some 3mm ABS housings. They're 900mm long. I was looking how to make a jig to hold a DeWalt trimmer or even Dremel over the edge of the machine bed. What I did for now was machine a jig that fits over the end of the ABS casing and then manually rout out the holes with a 3d printed guide bush. Old school but effective. There's a chance I need to do several 100 more cases so I'll certainly look at a rig to hold some sort of small spindle out there. Nice work and good inspiration.

Great addition. I can see using that setup to create tenons on the end of stock. I would talk to Axiom about creating this as an addition to their product offering! Smart guys like you are what manufacturing companies need input from.

James, thanks for watching, although I haven’t tried it for tenons yet, I’m pretty sure it should work fine as long as I don’t hog out heavy cuts.

Brian, thanks for the information. This is EXACTLY what I need to do with mine. I'll be cutting hardwoods (mahogany and maple) so I'm a little nervous about the cutter head flexing when it's out that far. I guess I'll have to try it and see. Was that a 6" aluminum wide flange that you used?
@BuildswithBrian
@BuildswithBrian 11 ай бұрын
I used an 8” aluminum bean with a flange width of 5”, with the important surfaces machined flat and parallel, and machined in the location pins as well. Good luck sir

great jig brian, can you tell me where you sourced the cases? im considering getting some for tool cases,and do you think Axioms single screw for the y axis is a weak point compared to other CNC machines? mine has 2 screws on the long axis. you have a new subscriber , thanks
@BuildswithBrian
@BuildswithBrian 2 жыл бұрын
To answer your second question first, I do not think it is a weak point to have the single screw at all Actually, it’s just unfortunate when you have a single screw you cannot cut a hole in your spoil board and put something that is particularly deep like the cases I have been cutting. It’s just the nature of the design. The actual them I have is working phenomenally and I have no beefs with it at all. As far as your second question about the cases and where I source them, my customer actually supplies the cases. They buy them from various suppliers online, including Amazon

@@BuildswithBrian thanks brian, my German made CNC is getting old and it may be time for a new one soon, i like the high z height on the AXIOM and we have an irish dealer here. i may try and track some cases down, they gotta be cheaper than the overpriced systainers from festool! my small shop is unheated and im constantly fighting surface rust on tools,the CNC is indoors. going to case up my hand tools in the shop with dessicant packs and see if that helps. cheers.

What the size would you suggest for about 2” overhang? Want to do mortise and tenons.
@BuildswithBrian
@BuildswithBrian 4 жыл бұрын
Jaez85 Your spacer would need to be a minimum of 6 inches, to achieve 2 inch hangover, Assuming of course you have the exact same machine that I do

clever solution. I have the same machine, now that it has been six months would you do the modification again? Any unseen issues arising from the modification?
@BuildswithBrian
@BuildswithBrian 5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, it made my machine more useful, I use it for some Jobs that earn money, and no I wouldn’t change anything with my modification. I would say the only drawback I’ve encountered is that it takes about a half hour to switch over .

I can't see this doing any harm to your machine. My CNC router is just made out of cheap plywood and strength has never been an issue. I am very surprised they do not build this ability in to their CNC in the first place, some overhang is required for cutting dovetail joints etc.
@BuildswithBrian
@BuildswithBrian 4 жыл бұрын
I agree, Axiom should definitely have designed an overhang into their machine, Especially considering their design with one centered shaft to drive the Y axis does not allow you to remove a portion of spoil board so you can drop something down and work on something tall Thanks for watching!

@@BuildswithBrian but could a person cut a rectangular hole in the bed, off center of the Y axis screw?

@@acerjuglans383 no that would not work, there is the cross member that is driven by the center lead screw.
