Just built mine Thursday. Im 6'4'', so i decided to take out the rear seats and the passenger front seat and ran it long ways. Im able to lay flat and have room above my head and feet. Now i got a bunch of storage area behind the driver seat and center console for cooler, clothes, and equipment. KEEP UP THE VIDEOS!!! You earned my sub

Now thats smart! Never thought about taking out the front seat. You’ll definitely have a ton of space to sleep and storage. I’m 5’10” so it just enough for me to sleep straight at an angle and I just move the seat forward. I don’t think my wife would be be too fund of not having a seat when I’m home lol but that’s the way to go! Appreciate the sub man 💯

Wish I lived down the road and could have helped you with this project. Glad there are not a bunch of carpenters in here bashing the attempt. Couple basic tips though for future projects... If you turned the 2x4s on the skinny edge, they are much more rigid, and you would have had 0 flex or weakness across the top even with 2 people. Those creeks and pops are because of the flex in the stiffener boards pulling at the screws where they attach into the plywood. You would loose 2" more space in the opening, but gain 4x stiffness. I would drop the height to gain it up top, and make a drawer on each side underneath, but that is getting into other levels of design and skills. Also, when screwing like that, you really want to pre drill near the ends to keep from splitting. Amazon - counter sink bit - for a few bucks. Also, an 80 grit sanding block to knock the sharp edges off everything goes along way in comfort department, while still keeping within the basic DIY level. Good to see beginner attempts at this kinda thing. Thanks for the Hotshot content, keep it up man.

@@OliviaSeParte see how he has them where they are laying with the 4" (actually 3.5") surface touching or attaching to the plywood? Turn that board and do the layout/measurements so that the 2" (actual 1.5") is the surface that you attach... so kinda "on edge". Look under pretty much any wood table and you should see what I'm talking about. Search for a few "workbench builds" on here, and you will see what I'm talking about as well.

If I were going to build a bed like that I wouldn't use plywood, and that board across the middle will eventually cause some back pain. I would keep the 2x4 box and find a good strong cloth (like denim or canvas) and stretch the fabric across the frame nail or staple the fabric tight and create a kind of hammock. Put your foam mattress on top of that. Most truck drivers have back problems because of what they sleep on. Oh course most truck drivers weigh 350 pounds and that might be the real problem. You'll be ok.

This is hilarious! Keep up being persistent bro. For future reference it may be easier to build the frame inside the truck first. Just a suggestion... not mandatory. Also keep in mind how thick the mattress will be. Consider a foam mattress will be 8-10 inches thick. Every inch raised gets you closer to the ceiling of the truck. If you don’t mind not being able to sit-up it may be no big deal. I am 6’4” so I prefer not to stretch at an angle. I have seen the front seat removed and using the distance from the front to the rear seat alongside your drivers seat as a bed. You still can have storage under the bed near the rear as well as behind the drivers side seat. I am enjoying your journey! Peace Love and Safety to you!
@HotshotMacc
@HotshotMacc 3 жыл бұрын
Hey man I appreciate the feedback brother! You are actually right, it’s not until after I did this build I heard of the other option of taking the front seats out. However, I do like the fact that I have my front seat when I’m home and using it for personal reasons. Bc it would be a hassle to take them out and put them back repeatedly. I used a 4” foam mattress. I need to do a video update on my set up bc I ended up having to cut the legs shorter bc it was just too high lol still have room for storage under the entire bottom area so thats a plus. Thanks for watching man and appreciate the love. Stay safe 💪🏽

Older video, but just a comment. Could you not use chains from the top to suspend the wood, instead of using legs? So just 2 or 3 legs on the rear side of the cabin, and use chains from the rearmost cabin pillars to the front of the bed on both ends. That way underneath the bed you would have a clear floor, gaining 4 inches of room. Also when not in use you could use a small strap to pull up the bedframe, gaining some extra storage space.
@HotshotMacc
@HotshotMacc 2 жыл бұрын
You probably could but thats way beyond what I do.
@PTRRanger951
@PTRRanger951 Жыл бұрын
There is nothing to support chains from the roof. It is very weak metal on any vehicle. The support for the roof comes from the pillars. So you can maybe mount something to the seatbelt bolts. But it will be way better with legs anyway. It will move too much with it hanging from straps or chains. Legs are the only way to go in reality and you don’t really lose any space.

Got a question for you now that you are a hot shot do you know if you have to stop at scales whenever you don’t have a load on your trailer for example you drop a load off and you’re on your way to pick up another load elsewhere do you have to stop at the scales with your truck and trailer when not loaded?...
@HotshotMacc
@HotshotMacc 3 жыл бұрын
Thats a good question bro. From what I’m told, as long as you drive a commercial vehicle you should be stopping at every scale just to be safe. I’m not 100% on if it makes a difference being loaded or not. I plan to get the in cab transponder that tells you if you need to stop or if you can bypass so save time.

I thought hotshots couldn't sleep in their truck, I wanted to do hotshot a while back and that was one of the biggest cons for me having to rent hotels all the time

@@HotshotMacc What state are you in? I know in Texas you must have a legit sleeper set up per DOT otherwise you need a hotel room
@g4g412
@g4g412 2 жыл бұрын
Still not a DOT regulated sleeper. If using ELD logs, put it into off duty for your 10hrs of rest, because if logged into sleeper berth and you do not have a DOT regulated berth you will not be in compliance and will be put out of service.. Follow the federal driving rules if you are hauling freight. Many blessings!
@HotshotMacc
@HotshotMacc 2 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct man! That’s exactly what I do and go into off duty, we don’t use sleeper birth in hotshot and I save hotel receipts. We did our research brother. I appreciate the heads up.

That gotta hurt because you are unable to use the 8/2 or 7/3 split sleeper option to pause your clock.

@HotshotMacc Жыл бұрын
@@bheat1273 let me be more clear, a DOT sleeper is not a necessity for hotshot. We log our reset as off duty and not sleeper birth. Unless your team driving, a DOT sleeper in a hotshot is not necessarily a need. And at the end of the day, there are gray areas with it. So no this is not a DOR “sleeper”. Can you buy a DOT sleeper setup for a hotshot? Yes, if you feel it’s necessary.
