1977 South African Grand Prix. Two weeks of tyre testing prior to the GP. Teams arrived on a Sunday to unpack and set up. Nothing in the way of shops are open on a Sunday in South Africa. It was a VERY hot mid morning and we were watching Team Surtees unpacking. One of the mechanics approached us asking if any shops were open in order to purchase liquid refreshments. Of course we were prepared for this and had an icebox in the boot of my car filled with ICE COLD BEER. We obliged and ended up sharing a beer (or three) with John and the team. FANTASTIC. Needless to say, for the remaining two weeks we had full access to the pits/paddock as "guests".

To have the will to fulfill one's cappacity at the highest levels with grace and humility, isnt that the definition of greatness?

That and walking away from Ferrari when Enzo was still alive (and running it like Capt Bliegh).

Well. for anyone who doesn't know, or haven't seen a Vincent Black Shadow . Let me tell you. Your life as a motorhead isn't complete untill you do ! That machine is a technical marvel! It is so full of fantastic engineering solutions it's just unbelievable ! And to hear that both Father and Son (two race nutter's) was involved ,makes complete sense and is a joy to hear(was news to me) 👍🏻

I'm a huge fan of John Surtees, especially his Ferrari and Honda years. Local lad to me here in south London.

In the book Go Like Hell, A.J. Baime tells of John Surtees' popularity among the Italian people. Everywhere he went people would applaud him and call out "il grande John" It's a shame Surtees was stupidly ushered aside at Ferrari after his crash at Mosport. It gave Ferrari a chance to bring in "Italian" drivers even though all of Italy adopted John as one of their own including Enzo. When he quit Ferrari on the eve of the '66 24hrs of Lemans, Carroll Shelby offered him a drive in a top Mk.II team. That's how respected a driver John Surtees was.

Surtees payback came the next year... At Monza. Not to mention that he still managed to finish 2nd in the 1966 WDC despite going to a new/uncompetitive team mid-season.

@@plantfeeder6677 True. He's the only one that made a difference in those heavy contraptions. Though I don't take anything away from Pedro Rodriguez at Kyalami the following year, despite that GP being an event of attrition with the field.

Excellent bio/doc. Influential designers and competitors--especially in motorcycle racing--I was unfamiliar with. Have never seen so many spit-polished bikes on museum display. I saw Surtees take his final GP podium: 3d at Watkins Glen - 1969 US Grand Prix. Jochen Rindt's first GP victory; Piers Courage finished 2nd--both killed before season's end. Pedro Rodriguez 5th, Silvio Moser 6th--both dead within five years. Surtees and Jack Brabham (4th) perished "naturally." An elegant, merciless sport it was, then. Seems like eons ago. We used pencils, and there were fewer than fifteen electric ducks in NYC.
