"25" (The Composition Causa Sui)
A composition that composed itself.
"25" is a 25-voice composition in which 25 different, randomly selected voices perform a causa sui composition with piano accompaniment.
Causa sui (transl. cause of itself, self-caused) is a Latin term that denotes something that is generated within itself. (Wikipedia)
I had two songs, and between of those two songs, I had to compose some kind of transition. The problem was that the previous song ended in Bb major and the next song was in D major. After trying all kinds of rubbish, I decided to try causa sui composing and letting the composition compose itself.
I wrote down the Bb major triad as a five-note voicing, and I decided which notes would go chromatically up and which would go down. I let the notes move until they formed a D major triad. Each note of the chord voicing changed five times (five notes × five changes = 25).
The composition sounded exciting on the piano. I decided to add more water to the stove and double those 25 tones, with 25 different sound sources. And to get even more thrills, those 25 different sound sources would be randomly selected.
The result was surprising and I am very satisfied. The only small disappointment was that the last chord, D major, took the function of the fourth degree of the major scale, but that's what happens when you start playing a contemporary composer.
