"If you're a black woman in tech all you need to do is spell HTML and you're guaranteed a job." UGH!! As a white woman in tech I get a lot of the same comments, that people just hand out tech jobs to women because companies want diversity. DEFINTELY NOT TRUE! It took me months of applying/interviewing to get a job. I am so happy that you are making these videos and sharing your amazing experiences. Thank you

@@Mobay18 Actually, there are a lot of shitty guys in the tech industry, so your reasoning isn't really borne out by what we see. Silicon Valley companies are a mix of varying shades of political persuasions and personal behaviors. Historically, it's been more full of privileged, libertarian, small government types, like the ones you see in (surprise) The Tea Party. I can see why you would think that, but there is little benefit from doing this screening. Their focus has tended to be one that focused on the ability to do coding tests, or tests for cleverness and "pattern matching" (someone like the interviewer, lol), to the exclusion of other qualities like being an empathetic human being that thinks about how their work impacts society. At the end of the day, tech companies exist to make money for their shareholders, if they're listed companies. Any non-listed companies usually have investors waiting on that payday. The bottom line will take precedence over pesky things like human rights (China, ICE, overseas despots) and societal impact (teenage anorexia? fake news? FB says no worries)

I'm still early in my career but these are something I do to figure out if this company is a good fit. -I usually try to speak with a black woman or WOC (if they have one 🤦🏿‍♀️) that works at that company to get the real 🍵 about what its actually like to work there -I ask questions about the culture specifically questions about how engineers share knowledge, performance review, mentorship, work life balance, retention this helps me get a sense of the company's culture. One of the other companies, kept emphasizing that the culture was "competitive" and engineers compete with each other that was a red flag for me lol These are some of the things I look out for, but I'm still learning how to do this better!

You can achieve, if only you can put effort and believe it. Though it may not come in the form you want, but it will certainly happen. Sorry about your loss, I can understand how it weighs. All the best in your new job. 👍

Omg this is so relatable. I had an interview with Facebook and bombed it! To be honest it was one of my first interviews and I was very new to algorithms so I expected it, but was a good experience :-) .

Great video. I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your parent. Being first generation, and also loosing a parent, I can relate to the additional responsibilities it adds.

Very good advice: find the companies that offer the pay and kind of life you are looking to live, rather than focusing on just one company, and apply to many companies offering the lifestyle you want.

That's normal in NYC. You pay a few million for a place to live. Then you step over the homeless, people push people in front of the train, rats run past your feet. But you Can't beat the Diversity, Shopping and Convenience. Everything is within 5 to 25 miles.

Really like your videos Bukky. Sorry you lost a parent. May God heal your heart. Just found out about LeetCode through this video. I hope I learn a lot from it on my own dev journey. I need to be consistent, and seeing your videos always pushes me, so thank you. Who knows, I might start a youtube channel to document my journey as a long-term repeat programming learner 😅
