Maltese flag bulk carrier Julietta D collided with tanker vessel Pechora Star off the coast of Ijmuiden, Netherlands on January 31, 2022 at around 0940H UTC.
Storm Corrie was battering the area. Around the anchorage area are wind farms. This looks like a recipe for collateral damage.
The 37,200 DWT ship was at the anchorage when the wind geared up to more than 70 miles an hour in the North Sea.
Her anchor didn’t managed to hold on and collided with an oil/chem tanker Pechora Star which is also at anchor.

never understand these things: they anchored when the ship was in good shape; just because the anchor dragged or was lost, the ship cannot power up to regain control?

By the photos the ship was 'light' and, considering the forecasts, should have been ballasted to counter any unwanted movement (probably should've put out more anchors as well)

Such a massive ocean and happens to be drug into 2 things. I read the Capt and chief officer were arrested for abandoning the ship before everyone else got off. Don't know how that could be true unless they hopped into the life boat and lowered it. Didn't see one though

They were arrested for premature abandonment: that means they abandoned ship when they should have stayed aboard (allegedly).

Great video. One question though - how did they manage to get a towline on board if there were no crew on it?

They will have landed a salvage crew from a helicopter to make the tug fast.

@@lawrencelarkin4670 and that’s why they get paid megabucks to do the job I guess. Thanks for explaining - cheers

Solely due to the incompence of the master and the first mate. They must have had warning of the gale and it is obvious that the vessel is in a very light condition. On receiving the gale warning additional ballast tanks should have been filled to steady the vessel. However the worse failing of the deck officers is that they clearly did not keep a proper visual or radar watch. If they had they would have realised that the vessel was dragging her anchor, ordered the starting of the main engine and gone dead slow, or slow ahead which would have taken the strain off the anchor and stopped the drifting. Yes I was at sea when a young man, but that was on properly manned and well maintained British flag vessels. There aren't many of those left now as poorly maintained and manned flag of convenience vessels are much cheaper to operate.

Pay bananas. Get monkeys. Also, companies want to squeeze their budget and this also affects the crew's performance in making proper maintenance.

It's crazy when ships collide. Reminds me of my last car, a big old Cadillac. I was sitting at a red light, waiting for it to change when another car hit me from behind, pushing me through the intersection. After I made sure everyone was alright I asked her, "what did you not see, the red light or the big ass car, because I really need to know." How do you not see a whole ship? I really need to know. 🙁

She was dragging her anchor. Maybe the crew wasn't able to start her engine.

Takes time to start the main engine. Then you have to heave up the anchor which, in that sea condition, could be at least 8 or 9 shackles in the water.

@@Sam-W Engines should be ticking over ready in that kind of situation and not shut down in order to take the weight off the anchor or heave the lot up and dodge the vessel bow into the weather.

Music is far too loud and distracting; also, simply using radar plots makes the whole video a headache to watch
