I’m 67, have MS and my 73 year old husband & I live in an apartment in an area where highways can be closed due to fires and floods. We’re on a pension so cost control matters. We do an online grocery order once a week and a monthly Costco shop in person. I buy my toilet paper at Costco 1 case at a time but due to minimalism I have room to put them all away under the 2 bathroom sinks. When I’m down to about a dozen it’s time for another case. That still allows me to put the fresh case away. I don’t keep much else there- a refillable spray bottle of cleaner and a roll of paper towel. Toilet cleaner lives beside the toilet and shower spray lives in the shower. We have some drawers for toiletries so the sink cabinets fit lots of TP. I buy soap, cleaners, lotion shampoo etc only as needed on Senior discount days (20%off) when we are running low on the ones in use. I have a fridge freezer but I buy meat and repackage in sizes that work for us- just 2 adults. I freeze flat and “file folder” them in the freezer compartment. It’s a drawer type under the fridge. This means I don’t have to pay full price and it’s on hand when I’m deciding what is for dinner. I often freeze fresh veggies when I get a good deal on a larger quantity than we use. My limit is the freezer compartment in my fridge but flat packs in 2 person amounts work beautifully. I never store anything under my bed, too hard to get to & in the way of the robot vacuum but those are my bulk buys- meat and toilet paper. I keep a few IKEA bookshelves with doors for a small pantry. Tinned goods, vitamins, cereal etc in constant rotation. Only what we use in high turnover items.

I tend to buy laundry soap, dish soap, and paper products in bulk. Simply because I can buy them and then forget about it. I bought a massive jug of laundry detergent. It was so big it was difficult for me to carry. Lol but I bought it last October for 19.99$ at Costco and I just used the last of it this weekend. Now I’m not washing clothes for a family of four. It’s just me, but that laundry soap lasted me nine months and I thought that was a pretty good deal.

I'm really enjoying TK's insight & wisdom in the episodes I've watched recently, he's definitely an awesome addition to you podcast! The three of you have such different personalities and views and it's so wonderful to get a balance of different perspectives and I think you have the perfect balance that everyone can relate to What he said was so true! It really matters how you make the people that matter to you feel! Yes, you can be assertive and abruptly say no to someone and stand-your-ground but if it's someone that truly matters to you then there is a kind & honest way you can say it without hurting their feelings. Because in the end, your goal is probably a great relationship with that person. There's no need to walk on eggshells but kindnes still matters. You can be assertive and still be kind in the way you do it. I believe people respect that, it doesn't mean you need to be a pushover, it just means you care about others.

I'm a minimalist myself, but when it comes to food, toilet paper, soap, etc. I like to have extra on all of that out of convenience. I love not having to go to the store every time I want to make dinner. I hate running out of things. Especially with so many supplies that we have seen get low in the past 3 years, it's a good idea to have extra so that you have it in case you can't get it the next time. But even with me having the extra. It doesn't get in the way of my life. I actually have more peace knowing that if my neighborhood got flooded by rain and I can't leave my home, I have plenty of food on hand. That to me is peace.

Bulk purchases are a great way to save when you live in a country with inflation occurring every month (like Argentina, where I live) 😊 this even aplies to basic clothing that you know you can always wear, like socks, underwear or basic tops

I loved this episode. TK has a great way of putting things that just makes a lightbulb go off! As a family of 8 with 6 kids we buy a lot in bulk for the savings and convenience. Even then sometimes you have to remember the "container size" you have to store items. I have shelves and food bins now labeled with exactly how many of that item fits. I know how long it takes us to go through the Mac n cheese basket and only buy what comfortable fits.

Love putting a “distance” between impulse purchases. As I become less of an impulse consumer I have also found it the norm to put a distance on purchases. It is just as easy to delete something from my shopping basket as it is to add it. Thanks guys!

I hate going to the store, once a week is all I can really tolerate. And I literally just got back from the stores like 2 hours ago, because I had to do Walmart pickup PLUS go to 2 grocery stores (the first one was missing some things so a 2nd was necessary). But, we have all of our food and essentials for the week and now I don't have to worry about it.

If I buy several of a consumable item, I'm more wasteful / liberal with my use of it and it runs out faster than if I only purchased one. So bulk buying, even if an item is on sale, ends up costing me more. Oh and my partner bulk bought twenty four, 16-packs of toilet paper and this was BEFORE covid! It was stacked all the way down the hallway and in his wardrobe and it drove me crazy. We're still using it... me, I'm probably tearing off more sheets than I usually would.

Kanban is a lean manufacturing principle that applies perfectly to toilet paper... visual control so you have a spare and that triggers you to replace it. I thought having lots of inventory was a good thing at work until I learned about 6 Sigma and obsolescence. Having said that, I'm happy to bulk buy non-perishables to avoid shopping: never ran out of toilet paper yet!

I find it rude and offensive when people sugar coat, beat around the bush, or saying no through back handed compliments. Of course, I am direct and no matter how softly I deliver a message those ppl find me rude and offensive. But they never think that they themselves can be rude and offensive.

This episode left me wondering just how much my consumption habits are changed by having "backup" stock. I'm disciplined in terms of purchasing, but how much is my post-grocery store behaviour affected by what I've determined to be an economical purchase? An example could be, like TK said, razor blades. Am I too quick to grab the next one thinking my current blade might be too dull because I have a bulk Costco pack? If I had just one disposable razor blade would I use it longer? This may apply to any consumable... food... Oh, boy! The worms are attacking!!!

I personally stand on the subject of emotional sensitivity .. to each their own period .. When I do offer something .. & my statement here is an offering ...take it or leave it .. everyone is born with their own choice selector ... how you process what ever is on you ! how I process what ever is on me ... Concerning , " Emotionally caring ' , on such matters ... who hasn't witnessed the tool of emotional manipulation often selected ... by a individual who by their design uses their emotional victim stance as a platform to manipulate !
