Another excellent video Ryan. Love the Quoy. Really interested to see if you have any trouble with him and the corals. Great choice on all the fish you’ve chosen. And BTW, it was great seeing you(and Randy) this weekend in Orlando. Had Yellow Coris Wrasse for about one year. Best fish ever! So bright and lively, ate all big amphipods (that used to give me problems) and worms. Adjusted to sleep in crushed coral (thin) and accepted all types of food. Then... he jump out a couple of weeks ago. I have a lid, I knew he's a jumper, but somehow he found a tiny gap between the lid and the glass wall and jumped right through it.

Mos Def having a proper QT video . It's not done enough, everyone talks about it but not many actually do it to the extent that it needs. There are risks though that the fish may die during the process unless you have a QT system large enough to not stress them out.

Had lawnmower blenny before in my tiny 14 gallons tank - it didn't eat any algae, only pods from it. I recently added very small Scopas Tang to my 20 gallons tank (temporary, until it grows bigger) and he's not eating the algae either - hiding most of the time and eats only nori, attached to the glass. If I don't feed him nori, he gets thinner and thinner for several days, then I give up and give some nori again. I left a huge patch of hair algae in one of the corner hopping he will start munching on it, but he completely ignores it even if I attach his food next to the patch. Is the tang somehow defective or lazy? Or maybe he is too young (very small) and doesn't have the skill? I basically don't see him picking stuff from live rocks at all as all other tangs (primary yellows) do in people's tanks.

For a smaller system like that, it would be best to skip the tangs and go a different route. As far as nano-friendly utilitarian creatures go, pincushion or blue tuxedo urchins do a fantastic job. You could also add a few nassarius snails (assuming you have a sandbed) and a few Trochus snails.

My experience with buying fish online: Do QT your fish for 90 days before putting them into the tank (do this for local purchases as well). Seems like forever, but if you really want to ensure they are ich free, this is the only way. Do the tank transfer method if you notice your fish have ich (it's pretty obvious) Do buy from live aquaria's divers den. Do not buy from liveaquaria. They're website is great, and divers den is great, but the main store is an LA fish farm that sends you a gamble every time. Not worth it.

I have a question. It seems to be a golden rule that you don't want to introduce too much bio load to a new tank. Yet here you suggest that a group of small tangs be added to a tank before you begin the light cycle. Could you offer clarification to this? Thank you
@BRStv
@BRStv 4 жыл бұрын
Bioload is all relative to the tank's size, amount of rockwork, and filtration. Adding a couple of tangs to a big 160 gallon display tank is really not too much different than adding a pair of clownfish to a 10-20 gallon nano system.

I resisted tangs for decades because I saw them in every tank and don't like buying into trends. 2 tangs in a 150 and I haven't cleaned the rocks in 5 or 6 years. I did screw up and get a clown tang because you don't see them as often. You don't see them in tanks that often because they are serial killers. I named mine orca. What was latched onto that fishes tail?
@johnNJ4024
@johnNJ4024 5 жыл бұрын
They are parasitic isopods. There is also a type of parasitic isopod that gets inside of a fish's mouth and latches onto its tongue. It then eats the fishes tongue and latches onto the floor of the fish's mouth where the tongue was and makes its home there. The isopod then gets a free meal whenever the fish eats something. The isopods that I'm aware of that do this are about the size of your thumb, I doubt you would find any on smaller aquarium fish, but maybe there are smaller species. Hopefully others will add comments.

Not sure I completely agree with the whole "if you got a small tank, just get a tiny tang and trade it later" first catching a fish in a reef isn't the easiest thing to do, plus the assumption that someone else is going to get you out of your problem later is not the wisest of directions to go. Maybe you do have an awesome store near by that does offer this, but it definitely is something you should inquire about before you go ahead and do it. That said, if you have a 40 gallon tank I think the best mentality to go into things is there simply is no "automated" solution to algae problems, just deal with them manually as they come up, fill your tank with corals so there's no place for algae to live, and you'll do just fine.

@@timlaw1612 To get them to even reply back to an email is a job in itself. So many of the same horrible reviews. I placed one order with them for a copperband, the day it was to ship out I was told it wasn't eating and they wanted to watch it. 4 days later they said it was ready to go. After it arrived, 24 hrs later in it's own new qt tank this fish broke out with the worst ich case I've seen. It was covered. I was able to cure the ich, and it's now one of my favorite fish. We reached out to bluezoo and after days of waiting for a answer, we received a " well look into it response". We followed up and they emailed back " there was nothing wrong with the fish, it had to be something you did." I've been in this hobby for 5 years now, I have a article published on R2R on venting swim bladders, I performed over 20 of these. I rescue sick fish from Petco stores back to health... But yes it was something I had to have done. My one time and last time ever buying from them.

Very interesting. I have ordered off them for many years and have had only one DOA and I recently had a foxface die within a week and they credited back my account immediately. They emailed me back the same day asked for a pic and then credited my account once and refunded the money the other time. That is a shame you went through that. But after over 40 orders in the past 10ish years I am pleased. I must say I just ordered my first batch of Tangs off of Marine collectors mentioned in the vid. They sound like they (Elliot) has an amazing QT process. I guess we all get different impressions. Thanks for sharing.
