Wait a minute, so bullbars are completely illegal in the UK? Wow, that's really unfortunate. Lawmakers tend to incorrectly assume that bullbars are just there too be hard objects that make the car too rigid to allow the crumple zone to perform effectively. In reality, modern bullbars (not the homemade ones) are designed to act as an additional crumple. The bulbar wall help to reduce the velocity of the other car before it touches the hood (bonnet) of your car. Modern bullbars full sized bullbars are also not completely straight like bullbars from back in the day. They are curve around the front of the car so that if another car strikes either side of the hood of your car, the curve will help redirect away from your car instead of capturing the full weight of the other car. I don't think the Uk should have completely banned bullbars. They should have just introduced safety standards for bullbar designs.

The point here is that payload weight limit is a premium when it comes to the vehicle's driving performance and comfort. I would prefer these features while driving long distance for hours or days, rather than exceed the weight limit my truck is designed for. Yes, weight distribution is important and a factor in addition to staying within the payload weight limit. In addition, I am one of those guys who resit modifying a trial-and-true vehicle such as "Grizzly" ... or is it "Bear"? Putting stiffer springs or air bag will help going on a straight line but these bandage mods often screw up the performance of the vehicle overall. It's my two-cent ..... This darn front bumper issue came up during a family discussion to build up my big sister's Rubicon and my Sprinter van. Needless to say, it didn't end up very friendly. This topic is as lethal as blue/red politics in my family .... sigh.

@@badgerpa9 we do not like it too... The only ones actually endorse these restrictions on real bumpers are people from western part of EU. In the Balkans, we are really not fond on these - we have more wild tracks where you have to have a gear you can rely on. Even additional lights have to be registered, and you are not allowed to have lights without covers above the original lights line (i.e. no work lights on the roof or the rack). We do agree that in cities these bumpers are more dangerous for pedestrians, but if we have to compromise our own safety, we would go with some real gear instead and just be careful in urban areas.

@@4x4CampingBulgaria you are allowed work lights on the roof of a vehicle, every fire truck has those, they just have to agree with regulation. I know many a professional truck drivers with working lights on their rig and its all legal inside the EU, I know of a body shop in my home town in Germany that builds Overland rigs on either Toyota Land Cruiser, Vans of different types or Land Rovers and all of them have lights on their roofs.

@@betaich that is what we were trying to say for EU - lights have to be in regulation and they MUST not be used in urban areas and have covers - such lights are for example Osram. Also they have to pass through DEKRA, TUV or another organization after being installed. All these fire trucks and other special vehicles pass through these - we know as we are working with Frontex border patrols for EU borders in Bulgaria-Turkey, or Bulgaria-Serbia, etc.

We speak from our personal experience. We drive a Defender. No airbags, no sensors, made of aluminium at the front and without a doubt more protected by having a front bumper. That's why I mention it's important people do their own research 😉 Our bull bar already saved us in one accident.

The crumple zones still crumple because you attach the bullbar to the front frame which is part of the crumple zone. When people have internal bleeding in auto accidents it is often no seat belt and hitting something like the steering wheel or the seat belt is not pulled tight so it stay on the hips. If your seat belt is loose the lap part will compress your internal organs and cause internal injuries. If you do not pull the lap part of the belt tight over your hips you will get hurt in an accident if the belt compresses your stomach instead of holding your hips in place. Seatbelts do not fit well on a womens body shape and they really need to make sure the belt is pulled tight over their hips that is why in accidents women will get bruising and abdominal injuries but a man may not. I have seen more than one whitetail deer accidents were the deer hit the front clip and the airbag wires tore off the sensor so the air bag did not go off in the accident. I am sorry if the 4 people where family, it happens in a flash and we often cannot react.

It's a Land Rover - with a front end shaped like an oversized housebrick. Hit a pedestrian with or without a bar and the outcome is really not going to be that much different. I also have a Land Rover with the same bar on the front - pedestrian damage is not really something that was a consideration when I bought and fitted the bar.

On ur third bottle of Vodka ? Hitting a bear, particularly a big bear, is NOT a soft impact, no matter how fluffy and soft their fur is... 🤦🏻‍♂️

Hey Vadim, I've seen lots of the Russia Dash Cam videos on KZfaq of cars crashing into each other.... you Guys NEED bullbars... ;)

They are only really of any use on larger 4WD vehicles with a steel ladder chassis. Other than that - you re right. If you bolt one to a monocoque body vehicle, you are likely to do more damage to the vehicle when you hit an animal than you would have done without it.

This is very informative thank you. So maybe you can answer the question I've always wondered on what the difference would be? The front end of a vehicle is solid metal is it not? I know maybe the front of some vehicles safety design has them absorbing impact when in an accident against a very large object or another vehicle but against a human I really don't understand that there would be so much difference in injuries between a bull bar and no bull bar at the same speed? I am definitely not an expert like you so we'd appreciate the explanation. Thanks a lot.

I guess that´s the two points: in urban areas (like almost complete Germany is) you would not instal one for passive safety reasons (hit a person). In very remote areas the chance to hit a huge animal is way bigger (if you ever had a elk in front of you in Scandinavia f.e.), than hit a person. That’s why modern cars have a front out of plastic (and are very, very soft in the front end (also the shiny looking Crome grills are made out of flexible plastics)) and a (old) Defender, is for this reason not a car in Europe. It’s defined as truck. (LKW in Germany). That’s also why it didn’t get a „car“-registration in the last years built. And that’s why you still get a bull bar officially on your old defender in Germany as well. Not as Bull Bar, but as holder for a winch. But beside all of this points: Hitting a person is always the worst case you can have.

@@porcobene_media I would argue the lighter materials are for fuel economy and the lighter materials on front of cars kill whitetail deer multiple times a day in North America. The plastic is just as deadly hitting you at 30 as aluminum is. I also think the plastics are making cars unsafe and see many more times that the cars front is obliterated by a deer and the deer goes through the windshield into the vehicle. If the deer stop from hitting a metal hood is safer than if the front shatters to bits and the deer lands on the people in the car after taking out the windshield. If you hit a moose they crush the roof down on top of you in the little cars.

@@GrizzlyNbearOverland It’s an interesting topic Leigh I’m an Aussie, from country SA, and definitely want a bull bar to protect against animal collisions when in rural areas Worldwide design / safety rules r definitely factoring in requirement for better pedestrian impact protection when collisions occur It’s specifically part of the Australian ANCAP testing regime Refer to the ANCAP www Every manufacturer wants the 5 star safety rating.. Autonomous Emergency Braking systems r now more advanced, and often also have specific autonomous warning of cyclists / pedestrians etc My 2017 Disco Sport has an AirBag mounted in the bonnet, that would pop out, to catch / cushion a pedestrian, and stop them from hitting the windscreen. The front of a vehicle does look solid, but, on a modern vehicle, behind the plastics that cover a front bumper bar, there is specifically designed crumple systems etc that do instantaneously cushion a persons impact with the vehicle, and these systems definitely greatly assist to reduce the injuries a person would receive, when they impact with a modern vehicle. IMO a bull bar is less friendly in an impact with a pedestrian. But, if u r doing rural driving etc, it’s foolish not to have one 🤷🏻‍♂️ Drive extra cautious in suburban environments, and the warning from autonomous pedestrian / cyclist warning systems, should also help to reduce the chance of collision, with these people, who r on, or near roadways...

@@GrizzlyNbearOverland All front areas of modern cars are designed for a wide range of requirements. One of it is pedestrian safety. Not only the bumpers are designed for it. Also the metal areas, even the front Window. If you have a look on the hood for example, it‘s very importants that it can absorb energy from bending the material . The edges of the hood has special requeirements. Between engine and hood must be enough space. The stiffening metal structures are not allowed to break the deformation caused of the impact ect. The front fenders are made for energy absorption, the grill ect. We design deformation blocks on areas where its necessary. The front Window breaks and bends more easy than in the 80‘s because of head impact requirements. The bull bar is made for breaking animals to secure the car from beeing damaged. The opposite function. The Metal is not bending. One of the comment writers wrote that it is maybe not necessary in the wilderness to have pedestrian safety. I think every car can collide with people. Anywhere. The defender has a very low level of pedestrian safety in opposite to modern cars. But it is much better than a bull bar. The pedestrian safety level is one of the reasons why the defender was not possible to produce anymore. Excuse my bad english!:)

@@badgerpa9 Driving slow the chance of hitting any animal is neglectable. As I said i’ve heard nobody hitting an animal in our overlander community. But nonetheless half of people here put those bull bars

@@dzheyd9609 I hope they keep it that way no one hitting an animal, most people I know that hit an animal do it when on the road. Saw a semi-tractor hit a bear on the Interstate last year and that would have totaled my truck even with a bar. The semi had a moose bar and drove off after reporting it.

@@badgerpa9 If you hit a moose, you typically break their legs and the body come tumbling into cabin. Bullbar does not protect you from that happening. Unless you drive a tall vehicle such as a Unimog, as a driver you are right in the trajectory. Moose, horse or similar size will ruin your day both with and without bullbar.
