The "Clown" was Max Patkin who was the real life Clown Prince of Baseball. He performed mostly in minor league parks. Stationed in Hawaii in 1944, Patkin was pitching for a service team, and Joe DiMaggio homered off the lanky right-hander. In mock anger, Patkin threw his glove down then followed DiMaggio around the bases, much to the delight of the fans-and a career was born. He is a national treasure!

This movie is one of my favorites. The tale of the player who has everything but enough talent. Side story, Kevin was told about when Mickey Mantle(one of the greatest ball players history) saw the film, and didn’t find it all funny because he remembered too many guys like Crash who were passed over, but were really good. That’s why I love this film, it tells the story of the unknown players who came as close as one could come to their dream without being able to live it. The story of the moonlight Grahams essentially, but I don’t think you would find many who would say they regret trying. This movie is a love story, a love for the game.

Being sort of a Moonlight Graham myself… I’m still figuring out whether or not I regret it. It’s a little back and forth, up and down, to be honest. It isn’t this adamant kind of resolve : “If I had to do it over again, I wouldn’t change a thing.” It isn’t like that. It’s more like “it’s a good thing I can’t do it over again, because I probably would change some things, and then I would miss out on the life I have now.” Something like that.

It was written by Ron Shelton, a career minor-leaguer himself. It was all based on his experiences. He played in the Triple-A club in my hometown. I can still hear the announcer: "At second base, Number 14, Ron Shelton!" Shelton has written a lot of movies like this. (See White Men Can't Jump.) His scripts are about sports and romance, but they're really about men -- the balance between toughness and tenderness, between bravado and the capacity to be hurt. The story doesn't jump up and tell you this. You just have to watch closely and you'll get it.

Good call on the ages. Sarandon was actually 42 when this came out. Kevin Costner was 33 and Tim Robbins was 30. The real off screen chemistry was between Sarandon and Robbins. They became a couple after this film and even though they never married they were together for over 20 years before they split and they had two kids together. All three of the main actors were amazing.

This is what's great about older movies. We always assume classics are always gonna be these epic larger than life things and yet some of the best ones are just these little slice-of-life stories that are really in touch with humanity and you just feel so much more hopeful afterward. We need stories like this.

Educational note: In professional baseball, there are Major League Teams, the big cities with the big stadiums and the big bucks and millions of fans. These are "THE BIG LEAGUES" or "THE SHOW". But each Major League team has a series of "farm clubs", teams in smaller towns with smaller stadiums, smaller attendance, and smaller salaries, of course. These leagues are grouped as either single, double, or triple A clubs, single A being the smallest and poorest. These leagues are called Minor Leagues. The players i the minors are either young, promising talent playing a few seasons to learn the skills necessary to compete in the Big Leagues, or else they are older players who either never made it into the Bigs, or did make it, however briefly, and are just playing out the rest of their career hoping to be called back up. "Nuke" was a young promising talent with speed on his pitches but a problem with control. He was in the Minors to see if he could learn the control he needed. "Crash" was just pissed to be back down in single A ball, he WAS playing double or triple A, hoping to get called up himself, but he got demoted to help school a promising, but dim, pretty boy.

The real-life Durham Bulls were indeed in the single-A Carolina League at the time. However, the publicity from the film helped build the fanbase, and with a new ballpark being built in 1995, they became a AAA club in 1998, when the majors added two new clubs, meaning new minor league clubs at every level were needed as well. The Bulls serve as the AAA team for the Tampa Bay Rays, so those who go on to play for the Rays are often Bulls before that. The film "The Rookie" is recommended by other commenters. It's about Jim Morris, who gave baseball another try after having been retired and ended up making the big leagues. (Dennis Quaid plays Morris.) Morris played for Durham during his comeback, before making it to Tampa Bay and thus the big leagues.
@RichardDicksondlyrch68
@RichardDicksondlyrch68 Жыл бұрын
And that's why the Bulls weren't outwardly sad about Nuke leaving for the show, because that happens all the time. That's the whole reason players like him are in the minors in the first place.
@Jessica_Roth
@Jessica_Roth Жыл бұрын
In 1987, the Bulls were affiliated with the Atlanta Braves and managed by current Braves manager Brian Snitker. About a half-dozen of the real-life Bulls eventually made the Show, but none jumped directly from A-ball, which is rather rare. More often, you move "up the chain"…Durham to Greenville (SC) to Richmond and then to Atlanta. You might skip a level, but rarely two, as Nuke does. That said, it works for the film. Ron Shelton (writer-director) made it as high as AAA with the Rochester (NY) Red Wings, the longtime affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, back when the Orioles were a dominant team. He played 2nd base, his partner at shortstop was Bobby Grich, who went on to be an multiple All-Star and probably should have won the MVP (Most Valuable Player) in 1979. (Some even think Grich should be in the Hall of Fame.) Of course, the Orioles already had players at those positions. When they traded their 2nd baseman (Davey Johnson), they called up Grich rather than Shelton, and by the time Grich left as a free agent, Ron was past his prime. But so it goes.
@marleybob3157

In the movie, the Bulls were a single A. Given that, the concept of a pitcher getting moved from single A to the majors, even at the end of the season for a team not going to the playoffs, is extremely remote. They wouldn't want to destroys the confidence off a young pitcher by serving him up to major league hitters. It is much more likely he'd be promoted to double AA or triple AAA if they were insanely impressed. But the majors, nah, ain't gonna happen. That is the one problem I have with the plot of this film.

Bull Durham was shot while I was a Sophomore at NC State. I saw Kevin, Susan, Tim walking down the street in Raleigh. I was star struck. The bar in the movie is across from NC State. Most of the extras were students. I had a chance to be in crowd during filming but could not attend. Also the field they turn on the water sprinklers is in Burlington the town I lived in for 20 years.

Hello Cassie Tim Robbins (Ebbie / Nuke) and Annie (Susan Sarandon) met on this movie and were a couple from 1988 to 2009. You might be remembering Susan from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". Maybe you saw her in one of her most recent works as Betty Davis in "Feud" 2017 or "A Bad Mom's Christmas" 2017. Other of her memorable films are "Thelma and Louise", "Stepmom", "Enchanted", "Dead Man Walking", "The Lovely Bones", "Cloud Atlas", and "The Witches of Eastwick". The movie is about MINOR league baseball. This is where some players go to play and train until they are "called up" to play in the MAJOR leagues (The Big Show). Each minor league team is owned by a Major League Baseball team. Hence, these players are still 'earning' a salary. Players will be 'let out of their contracts' if they (ML owners) do not see any significant improvement or hire someone else to take the player's place that could be a 'better' find.

I don't know if you read comments this long after a reaction But this was filmed in Durham, NC (the minor league team is called the Durham Bulls) and I was at the University of North Carolina ( which is about 10 miles from Durham) at the time getting my Masters's Degree. There is a restaurant near the college that is famous for its southern menu. Kevin Costner came into the restaurant 2-3 times per week. One day when I was there Kevin Costner came in and set near me. He said hello to me and we talked briefly about southern cooking and food, and the next time I came back the manager called me over and said Kevin Costner had asked the manager for my name and in appreciation of the things I told him about the food and cooking. He had left me a 500-dollar gift certificate for the restaurant. I still have it to this day!!

It's the bottom, but there are levels of bottom. In 1988 when this came out most major league organizations had six minor league teams. The Carolina League was considered "High A" or "Advanced A", so it probably would have been the fourth stop up for a player who played at every level. Very rarely, however, a particularly hot young player (such as Nuke) might start as high as Advanced A or even higher, especially if he was drafted out of college instead of high school.

As you have noticed, Kevin Costner has been in a few baseball movies. He was a serious about baseball when he was younger. He played baseball in high school and attended CSU Fullerton, which has a very strong baseball program. A lot of MLB players attended CSUF. Costner did tryout for CSUF's baseball team. The making of "Bull Durham" is also very interesting. The story is very similar to Sylvestar Stallone's "Rocky". Film studio executives were quick to reject the idea of movie about a boxer or for "Bull Durham" about minor leauge baseball. They thought it wouldn't make money since the public has no interest in minor league baseball. The writer and director was a failed baseball player. He had big dreams to play in the Major, or The Show. After playing in the minors for 5 years and no where close to be promoted to The Show, he hanged up his uniform. The script is based on his experience in the minor. After the director found a movie producer who was willing to take a chance on the project and was given a green light to make the film, Kevin Costner (I believe) was the first actor to sign up for the film. Like the director, Costner understood the life of a baseball player.

@@ct6852 Just realized that I never responded to your question about “White Palace.” James Spader is a young up-and-coming ad exec who’s recently lost his wife, and Susan Sarandon is a waitress at a burger joint (thinly veiled White Castle). Heavy drama, lots of steam, with occasional humor: Max: All I know is that when I'm not with you I'm a total wreck. Nora: And when you are with me? Max: I'm a different kind of total wreck.

As the team's season begins, she selects brash new recruit Laloosh (Robbins), whom she christens "Nuke," to inspire with the religion of baseball.
