Welcome to Sam Shutt Farming, daily life on the Hill farm
This is Sam and Oliver plus 4 children farming beef sucklers and sheep in the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border area.
We are first-generation farmers, and we've had no help at all to get to where we are now. We are here to show you our life and what we do. I am also here to show new entrance that it is possible to start from scratch. Being strong-willed, determined, and a lot of hard work, you can do it.
We are both from farming backgrounds. I grew up on a family dairy farm. Milking from a very young age.Working for my uncle when i left school. I've learnt everything from him and grown ever since. I met Oliver when I was 16 he was 15. We started with a few sheep when we met and have built up over the 16 years to where we are now. We took on a 500-acre hill farm in 2019, currently 5 years into the tenancy.
Also, here to show people women can be useful in the agricultural world.😉😁

I meant to comment on your previous vlog which was your best yet. The bit at the end when you were all with Sheila in hospital brought a tear to my eye. The whole thing was just magical. Keep up the good work!

The facts of farming, life and death. The farmer that I worked for years ago always had a few pint bottles of Guinness as a pick me up for cows like your one there, straight down the throat and it worked. Nice to see your little addition to your great family.

Great video sam there never boring the best farming channel That was some calf for heifers calf. She seems to have plenty of milk for another calf. Take care and look after yourself.

Its great you are lucky to have so much family support but please don’t overdo it. Just remember no heavy lifting even though you are a fine strong girl.Sounds like the cow had a trapped nerve. I hope she takes a foster calf.

Getting some recovery time at your mum's house was good. Where did the name Sheila come from ? One of your old relatives ? It's one which was common in the 50s and 60s, not used so much these days. Nice name, I am just curious as to what made you choose it. Jimmy is fearless on that 'motorbike' and a good helper around the farm. The girls are too. It's a good life for kids, lots of interesting stuff going on.

@jimmyjohnstone5878 Yes, a great life for the kids. They are always keen. So we named her Sheila after my mum. She's the one that's always there for Me the best grandma to the kids and my best friend. She's My go to person and always will be. None of our farming life would be possible without mum. She would do anything for anyone and never complains She's 1 in a million, and her name has to carry on😍😍 we rely on her and be lost without her.

@@Sam-shutt That's really good, naming her after the rock of your family. My family had mostly handed down names too. Fathers, mothers, grandparents. When someone phoned our house and asked for Frank or Margaret for instance, we had to ask 'is it young Frank you want or Dad ?' before we passed them the phone. One house phone on a huge long cable from the hall. No mobile phones or even wireless house phones in them old days.
