This week, we dive back into the Archives once again and take a look at some highlights of the mainline active Bulleid Pacifics of the last five years or so.
O.V.S.Bulleid designed his Pacific varients back in the 1940's, initially to the 'Air Smoothed' streamlined look with chaindriven valve gear. Two types of engine were built, the 'Merchant Navies' (classified 8P) and the 'Light Pacifics' (classified 7mt) with the later having two sun classes of 'West Contry' and 'Battle of Britain'. The class provided top-link express power on the southern region right up to the end of steam in 1967, and 31 of a total 200 that were built have made it into preservation.
Over recent years, the examples of the class that have been lucky enough to gain a second carer on the mainline have produced some amazing specticles for enthusiasts & public alike to enjoy, in this Episode of 'Archive Atlas' we shall take a look at the members of the class I have managed to capture on their various work up and down the country on the mainline network.
Locomotives included are:
- Merchant Navy 35018 'British India Line'
- Merchant Navy 35038 'Clan Line'
- West Country 34046 'Braunton'/Battle of Britain 34052 'Lord Dowding'
-Battle of Britain 34067 'Tangmere'
Hope you enjoy! Please let me know in the comments if you would like to see more videos like this.

Awesome pictures, especially of Braunton/Lord Dowding passing through what I’m guessing is Dover?

Lovely videos at so many different locations! I grew up near Chilham so instantly recognised the sharp curve there amongst several other more classic locations. The sounds are also most impressive. If ok with you, I would really like to use some as sound effects for a forthcoming video of mine on Unrebuilt Merchant Navy’s - would you be willing? The sounds are so good on your video and appropriate for my subject matter, I’d be most appreciative. Cheers, Steve.
