I get your point against 5.7. However, I think the rising popularity of the round has something to do with the new handguns or pistols available in the market. Putting it up against rifle rounds is somewhat unfair. Test it against semi auto handgun calibers and see the armor piercing results.

I'm a escrymador who does filipino martial arts. I've worn a full suit of armor at a HEMA place too. I guarantee a full swing with proper technique still hurts even through steel with padding behind, but it wont bruise or end the fight, its kinda weird. I'd believe something similar could protect you, but this armor doesn't look like it has any padding under it, so i bet a full swing by a trained hitter would absolutely suck for whoever is under that.
