@Scott McDonald --- Bingo! Well said. There was a firearms magazine named "Gun Facts" which did honest product reviews. It was in about 1969 or 1970(?). They were in business for one year, then had to quit publishing because the advertising revenue dried up. Gun and ammo and accessory makers do NOT like truthful reviews of their products. I wish that they were still around. "Gun Facts" magazine (It may have been a compound word --> "Gunfacts") was founded/edited by Ken Warner, who also had much to do with telling people about custom knife makers.

I have reliably expanded the Barnes TTSX 130 grain 27 caliber (270 Winchester) out to 500 yards on hogs and the velocity was at or just below 2000 fps. I think the game you are shooting plays a role as well as the distance/velocity. That being said my choice for an overall any distance bullet for my 270 is still the Nosler Partition.

A KZfaq channel named "simple minded fella" tests a lot of bullets in ballistics gel at high and low velocity. He tested 3 different all copper bullets in 6.5 creedmoor down to 2100fps and they all expanded very well. Based on that data the 120gr 6.5 creedmoor gmx bullet will expand beautifully out to 400 yards with 2100fps and about 1200 ft lbs of energy. Plenty good for a deer. If you limited the velocity to 2400fps you'd only get 225 yards. I'll stick to verified data over hearsay. There are subsonic 300blk all copper bullets that expand just fine. Making sweeping generalizations turns into missinformation very quickly.

@@veteranironoutdoors8320 Expansion at particular velocities is the main topic of discussion in Randy's video. If the bullet expands it will dump it's energy efficiently and do lots of tissue damage. It's up to the shooter to put that energy in the right place. Lots of experienced hunters love mono bullets when they try them because they tend to retain pretty much 100% bullet weight as opposed to many led core bullets. They penetrate well because of that weight retention. I would be all over them if they didn't cost so much.

Yeah it’s a little more nuanced than a blanket single velocity for all copper bullets. There are enough different intended uses for individual calibers that it can be different. 45-70 tsx bullets expand down well below 2000 fps for example. But, for most traditional longer range rifle calibers, it’s going to be somewhere north of 2000fps.

I’m approaching 20 dead elk and numerous mule deer and antelope with Barnes solid copper bullets. They sure hit hard and kill fast in my experience. I’m not a long range hunter. I stretched a couple out just past 400 yards and they performed great. Most kills have been with a .270 Winchester and several with a .300 Weatherby. I’ve called Barnes and they’d agree with Randy here. You need speed! Their TTSX and LRX bullets are improved designs that will expand at lower velocity’s (according to Barnes’ engineers). I use the Barnes 250 HP for all my game as it’s all bush hunting. 45/70. This bullet is deadly accurate and opens like a broad head arrow. No lead in meat. Copper homogenous bullets have a longer bearing surface per weight so you may have to use a lighter projectile for stability. No one has any business taking risky long range shots on big game. Leave the long range stuff at the range and varmit’s. Because these bullets are homogenous they are very accurate. You are not trying to “marry “ lead and copper together by some convoluted process.

I have never been a fan of the trend to very long distance hunting (shooting at game from distances like 600, 800 or even 1000 yards). Yes, there are very high tech scopes today that have gee whiz turrets that let you 'dial in' for distances. Yes, there are rifles capable of half minute accuracy, or even better. From a bench rest, I can make hits out to 1000 yards with these setups. That said, hunting in the field is a very different story. You don't have a bench rest. You may not have more than a few seconds to place your shot. What is the wind doing over the range you're going to shoot? Can you remain calm when looking at the biggest bull elk you've ever seen? Is the distance 900 yards or is it 1050 yards? I have a very good solution to the 1000 yard shot. It's called getting 800 yards closer. I'm a hunter, not a sniper.

Exactly to the point as always Randy. Bullets have to match the game and the distance and there is no way around that fact. Bullets that mushroom efficiently at even 500 yards blow up and separate at the closer ranges where most game is taken (due to excessive speed). Unless one has taken hundreds of animals and is a keen discriminating observer, people's opinion is shaped largely by poor social media info that often lacks reality. Randy is one of the few presenters that stick to the facts, based on his extensive experience in gunsmithing and hunting.

I am not much of a fan of copper anyways, my Handguns love all lead bullets, and since I make them myself the benefits are many. In rifles I myself will never use bullets without lead cores. No one should be shooting beyond a 1/4 mile, and I think anyone hunting with a guide should be limited to 300 yards. Are guides not able to hunt? - they should be able to close the distance.

You will never stop some idiots from shooting way too far no matter if it was a solid iron bullet from a 22lr and it subsonic at 10 feet. Good technology has been around a long time from people who understood bullets. I've taken too much big game to not have an opinion and i just don't think you will ever beat a lead core bonded bullet. It doesn't have to be the latest new fangled overpriced stuff in a fancy box to be good stuff either. Just as you have people shooting bullets that don't expand you have just as many shooting big game with varmint type bullets that fragment into a million small shards. A body needs that good controlled expansion but you need it to hold together so it can punch through bone and flesh to get to those vital organs. Companies market stuff wrong and i think are more to blame because some people just don't get to know what they really should on the subject. Always enjoy your stuff Randy, you have been around and do know your stuff to and i certainly never get too old to learn a few things from time to time. Interesting coincidence. In the mid-2000s I was reviewing reports of 5.56 mm bullet performance in Iraq and Afghanistan. The M4 carbine was gaining popularity, but the reduced velocity resulting from the 14.5" barrel was adversely affecting wound ballistics. The general consensus was a minimum of 2500 FPS was necessary for the round to dependably tumble upon entering a body. At lower velocities it was more prone to remain stable and bore a pencil hole straight through a person.
@jasonshults368
@jasonshults368 4 ай бұрын
I thonk you read those results backward. More velocity equals more rotational velocity equals less likely to tumble upon entering a more dense medium.
@Paladin1873
@Paladin1873 4 ай бұрын
@@jasonshults368 I don't recall spin rate being mentioned in the report, but there are several factors that affect projectile stability - shape, velocity, spin, mass, and length. What the study did show was a phenomenon common to firearms. When the projectile first existed the muzzle it was unstable and wobbly. The spin soon mitigated this problem and stabilized the round so it traveled downrange with minimal yaw and greater accuracy. However, some yaw remained and it is this yaw which was presumed to initiate tumbling once the projectile impacted the target. The greater the yaw at the moment of impact, the greater the probability of tumbling, but the effect of that tumbling is further enhanced by impact velocity (faster means better). However, because the rounds were well stabilized (due in part to the fast twist rate required to stabilize the 62 grain bullet in the M4 and M16A2) soldiers were noticing it often took multiple hits to down an opponent. Forensic examination indicated the rounds were tumbling only 50% of the time at ranges beyond about 200 meters (as I recall). The temporary workaround was to fire at least two shots into the body, thus increasing the probability of tumbling to greater than 50/50. Their conclusion was the faster a bullet travels, the greater the likelihood of a devastating impact IF it struck the target at maximum point of yaw. If not, then it was more likely to make pencil holes as it passed through (assuming it did not encounter material or bone that caused tumbling or breakup). When impact velocities dropped below 2500 FPS, the likelihood of a devastating wound channel was markedly reduced. Reduced hydrostatic shock may come into play here or other factors may be at work. At best this is an imprecise science and subject to many exceptions. I am only speaking in generalities.

Perhaps someone can answer this question about monometal bullets. I’ve had them change directions once inside an animals body. Sometimes drastically. My theory is that the petals start to shear and causes uneven resistance against the bullet. All ones i’ve witnessed have been high velocity impacts. Thats why i shoot A Frames exclusively now
@Th200Ponies
@Th200Ponies 2 жыл бұрын
I can take a swing, though i make no guarantees of correctness. Part1: the monometal leadfree bullets tend to be tougher, as our professor mentions here, so they don't deform as much our as quickly on impact. This means they will have a fairly smooth tapered surface for longer while inside the animal. Part 2: resistance traveling through a medium is a function of the speed of the projectile, the density of the medium, and a few other things (but we focus on those for now). This would mean there's more resistance against the bullet when it enters the body of the target, which lines up with your scenario. Part 3: body tissue isn't uniform. Even in the same muscle, there are fibers that are more/less dense than the fiber right next to it. Part 4: a force applied to a tapered surface can be equated to a set of two component forces. One perpendicular to the surface, one parallel. The perpendicular component would work to push the bullet side to side, while the parallel component would offer friction that would attempt to 'torque' the bullet about its center of gravity. Part 5: the projectile often enters a target surface at a slight angle due to the orientation of the barrel with respect to the target. The barrel is not pointed directly at the target, but rather above, allowing gravity to pull the projector down and still have it impact the target. Part 6: the projectile is constantly rotating at extreme speeds from the rifling, and due to the drop from gravity, the bottom surface of the bullet has more sideways friction force applied than the upper surface. If you combine these, you have a scenario where the high velocity projectile enters the body, maintains a relatively uniform shape/surface when compared to lead, encounters differing resistance from all sides, chooses the path of least resistance, and is also pushed/torqued differently on all sides due to the differing tissue qualities, friction forces, and net normal (perpendicular) force, thus allowing the projectile to rapidly curve while in the tissue. Again, i make no guarantees on the accuracy/validity of these theories, there is always more to learn and understand.

Our motto always was to never shoot an animal at a distance of more than 350 or 400 yds tops with a weapon capable of killing cleanly. I saw a Dall sheep shot at 300 yds with a 30-06 using the 165 TSX. The exit hole looked the same as the entry hole, but sheep are not tough and did it not go far. I agree you have to keep the speed up for proper expansion and quick kills. In the 30-06 the 150 would be a better choice unless the range is not far.

Randy I would really like to hear your opinion on the new rifle round adopted by the Army, the .277 fury. The round is fired through SIG's new platform the XCM5 / SPEAR rifle. This rifle was just chosen to replace the Army's M16 /M4 rifles and variants as part of the Army's NGSW program. Alot of people are questioning the Army's decision to adopt this round. It is an interesting round, a multipart case consisting of a steel base and a brass body that shoots a 6.8 135 135 grain bullet at 3,000fps! The operating pressure is 80,000 psi !

Very interesting and quite pognient for me as UK hunter, as it looks like we will be having a complete lead ammo ban in the next couple of years, that includes shotgun, rifle and air gun projectiles, maybe at the ranges we typically shoot say deer or fox In the UK, none lead cored bullets won't be an issue, but where the hell this leaves the humble game getter .22rimfire and the air rifle, I really don't know.

I've never had reason to try these "new" all copper bullets. I figure that if what I'm using works, why not stick with success? Sure, it's all about "progress" and keeping up with the new "trends", but often, I have seen that the new trends are just marketing hype or some form of someone trying to make a buck by re-inventing the wheel. I won't say that all copper bullets don't work well within their velocity range, but once that ideal range falls off, all bets are off. Besides, show me one example where any all copper bullet will do anything better than a Nosler LR Accubond or Nosler Partition on big game! Good luck trying to do that trick...

Research, educate yourself, and make the best decision for yourself. I did and it turned out great. Know the limits of the caliber, but especially the bullet, since that is what is going to be touching the animal. Be ethical in your shot. Remember just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Barnes ttsx are great bullets, but they dont have the effective reach that a sp, partition, or a (hybrid) federal terminal ascent bullet does. Though you dont have to worry about lead in your meat.

🤠 FYI - The SAMMI specks for the 7mm prc just dropped (on 06/07/2022)! The cartridge is essentially 0.535" wide, 2.28" long, has a neck of 0.2868", 30 degree shoulder, and has an operating pressure of 65,000 psi! It will push a 180 grain bullet to 2,950 ft/s (no different than the 7mm Remington Magnum), but is still 200 ft/s slower than the 300wsm with the same 180 grain weight bullet! So, at reasonable hunting distances, the 7mm bullet of the prc will never catch up to the 30 caliber bullet of the 300 wsm! 😁 So, there is nothing new under the sun! 😎
