Dime Piece Timepiece is proud to present the first proper video about this watch on KZfaq. One of the all time greats - the Bulova Accutron Astronaut. This watch was the first American watch in space. It was Issued to pilots of the Lockheed A12, the then-fastest aircraft ever made, and to pilots of the X-15, the still-fastest aircraft ever made.

Great video! I am a graduate of Bulova 1970 and have been repairing Accutrons ever since (54 years) for both the trade and private clients. A few points. Although the hands on this Astro are nice, they were changed. These hands were only used on 218 movements. One more point is, Bulova never called this a GMT model which was originally a term that Rolex. Bulova always called the 4th hand, part #133 second time zone hour hand. As far as the higher voltage batteries, I am a firm believer is keep watches as original as possible. I do not add any resistors or diodes to change voltage or use adaptive batteries. Adjustments can be made for the watch to keep the same time as it did on the lower voltage mercury batteries. As I said, the video was great and very informative

Wow thank you for that perspective! I truly appreciate it. Thank you for watching and for keeping these beauties running. I have a minty 1970 Accutron Deep Sea on original bracelet (really beautiful), but the movement needs a tune up. Is that something you might be able to help with? I've been looking for someone capable to have a look. Thank you

OK. So last weekend I was a local very small flea market in my local texas town. I visit that spot regularly and have found some good deals. Long story short I picked up a bulova accutron astronaut for 5 dollars. Yup, just crazy. Guy wanted 5 and I didn't haggle. I just received a battery for it. Popped it in and its running. I got a zulu strap for it since the leather it was on was totally wore out. I'm sure it needs some service but i'mma see what it does in a 24 hr period as far as time keeping. The humming noise the running fork makes is simply amazing... I wish I could post a pic...

I love the history behind these pieces. They were even worn in space. Many of the Gemini and Apollo astronauts were X-15 pilots who wore this as well. Neil Armstrong included! When I look at the dial and bezel i feel like Rolex copied it for their first generation Explorer 2 in 1971.

Thanks for fascinating review. I just got one of these from 1964 so the Bulova label isn't on it (it came in 1965). It's gorgeous. I bought this model year as it's my birth year. The bezel helps give the watch sufficient bulk to still look modern. Adjusting it was fiddly and I thought the hands had misaligned but either my eyes were playing tricks or the watch corrected itself so that the hour hand lined up correctly with the markers around the chapter ring. Is this a feature you are aware of?That second hand sweeping around the dial is mesmerising!

The reason they stopped using the tuning fork can be summed up in two words, "quartz resonator" which were very cheap to make and very accurate, The old school balance wheel watches ran at around 6 beats per second, Tuning forks at 360 beats per second, and the quartz resonator at 36,000 beats per second !

Look up AccuCell batteries. That 1.5 volt battery is both the reason why your 214 is running fast and damaging your watch. Also, check out Dereck, at LIV Watch. He knows what he's doing with these and also actually has an original Accutron tester.

Thank you. Bro it's tricky. I have a high standard of quality, and I'm proud of what I've made, so I don't want to put out crap that'll tarnish what is already there. Unfortunately the entire watch KZfaq scene has changed since I was making videos. It's all a bunch of 🤡🤡🤡s now and all of the original passion is lost. Case in point Tim Mosso, who hasn't bought a watch in three years despite having the world's inventory at his fingertips. He gets it, but it's obvious even the king's passion is dead. The only way to win this hobby is to be happy with what you have. That said, I'm thinking I owe it to my subscribers to do a SOTC, as I'm very content with my current watch collection and it would be cool to share my thoughts. What would you want me to make?

I'm sure he probably obtained it due to his love of aviation and his time in the USAF, but I don't think it was issued to him since he was also Corp of Engineers and not a pilot. :) He wore it throughout college and his early years practicing architecture.

Great overview! Just found one that was left behind by my father in law who passed away a few years ago. It’s in a bit of rough shape as he used it daily for years. Any suggestions on refurbishment? Will that detract from the value with replacement parts? Not planning on selling but instead keeping it in the family as a really cool piece of American history. Thanks again for the review!
@DimePieceTimepiece
@DimePieceTimepiece 6 жыл бұрын
Replacement parts almost always reduce value, but sometimes a watch needs it. It depends on the condition of the watch and what you want out of it. If you don't plan on selling it, perhaps resale value isn't as important to you. Accutron specialists can be found online that can help you with everything you need. Sorry to be vague, but there are a few variables. Thank you for the kind words. It's an awesome watch.

Another great video inspiring even more covetous. As a frequent traveler, I'm always lookng for a simple design that is rock solid accurate and has the ability to show, at least, two time zones. I love GMTs with a 24 hour hand and a rotating hour bezel. I was delighted to see a close re-issue of this design with the "Moonview" 96B205. Although it is only a three hand (no 24 hand), the bezel is inscribed with 12 hour markings. This design is similar to the Marathon Navigator, a watch I've long appreciated for its simplicity, and makes tracking a second time zone just as practical as the 24 GMT. But the Moonview bezel DOESN"T rotate! What is up with that? Why make a fixed bezel that could otherwise make the watch so much more functional, especially since it has the accuracy of the Bulova UHF movement? This is another example of why watches designed for fashion are so frustrating and infuriating. And why, once again, your videos are maddening. Now I have to find an original Astonaut! Sigh. Thanks.
@DimePieceTimepiece
@DimePieceTimepiece 6 жыл бұрын
Very kind. It's a terrible shame that Bulova pimped their heritage out so cheaply for that reissue. They didn't even try. Could have been such a great reissue with a true GMT hand and a 24 hour rotating bezel, especially if they could have built it around the 262kHz UHF movement. This watch has such an amazing history, it begs for something way better.

I too would love a true GMT re-issue, but regardless I have nothing but love for the Moonviews. They have been an absolute bargain, with new watches going for even less than $100. Now the stocks are getting thin and prices are going up somewhat for the few that are for sale anywhere, but they're still cheap. A superbly accurate watch with the good looks of an absolute legend (with a less interesting but also less temperamental movement) and that smooth sweep makes it my absolute favorite daily watch.

I have no idea to why this is not reissued. It would be less of a homage watch than their moon-watch - in (still) being a very historic quartz watch. (I would not mind them using the Precisionist movement - After all, most speedmasters sold do not use the original movement either. This would blow the "lunar pilot" (that was mechanical on the moon) out of the water. And to me, it would probably be held in higher (or equal) regards to the Glycine Airman. This watch is beautiful. A classic GMT pilot watch with a legacy - first "electric watch" in space - even having a place in the history of the "quartz crisis". I am totally dumbfounded for this watch not being reissued.
