A review of "the other Moon Watch." For some this is a great budget alternative to the Omega Speedmaster, but in a lot of ways it's a much more interesting watch in it's own right.
There's a couple of different versions of this watch, here's the best prices for each that I found:

My wife bought me the updated version of this for my 30th birthday. It’s all black, no date window, and old bulova logo. It’s so refreshing to see a channel with watches that doesn’t just show submariners, grand seikos and speed masters. Great channel

I really had a hard time deciding g between the black one and this one, but I use the date function too much to pass it by. I think the black version looks cleaner though.

@@JusttheWatch Original Bulova prototype doesn't have date window as well, however that's a strange move for Bulova to release 2017 version with no-date dial but only in black and polished instead of original sanded case.. When I was picking between new and old one, I ordered old just because I it's closer to original watch even with date window :D

I purchased the first version (45mm) on the leather strap in May 2018, and it's been an excellent watch that gives me a lot of pleasure. The original 1971 watch was over 43mm, so this is less than 2mm larger than that. It is a large watch, but not TOO large on my 7 inch wrist. I have several other watches from Seiko, Swatch and Pulsar which are similarly sized. I do prefer this 45mm version over the updated 43mm because the 45mm has the correct proportions, while the 43mm has the case diameter and lug-to-lug distance reduced, but kept the same diameter dial and crystal, and the same size crown and length of crown stem, so the crown protrudes more from the side of the case. Visually, the 45mm LOOKS more like the original despite the small difference in size. Build quality seems excellent, and the padded leather strap with it's basketweave pattern felt stiff at first but eventually conformed nicely to the shape of my wrist and became very comfortable. I've never even tried the NATO strap which was included with the watch. As you pointed out, the dial is simply stunning in it's detailing and legibility. Considering what you actually get for the price, I can't think of another analog chronograph which offers as much.

Great review i did not own a quartz watch until I came across the Bulova high-precision movement is awesome, and the dial is unique & interesting I also own the 43mm Blue & White Panda version dial Bulova recently brought out they also do the Black dial version both true to the seize Commander Dave Scott wore on the Appolo 15 moon landing, all the best from the UK.

This was a fun and interesting review. I found this watch in the last couple of days on on one of those more expensive British sites. This is the first review that mentioned that the pushers are hard to push to reach the engagement points. I decided to get this watch to have a bit of that unique history of a watch similar to that which went to the moon. I imagine the reliability of the watch will exceed that of the original movement of which your review reveals also was a mechanical movement. Presumably in a Lunar watch, was self-winding. This one was just a battery to be put in every so often. Thanks for the review and even showing different watch bands to give a little more depth than one normally sees in a review. Thank you. AF

@larrysmith6797 10 ай бұрын
You presume a watch worn on the Moon was self-winding? Wrong. NASA specifications called for hand wound watches because the agency presumed automatics would not work in zero-G. Obviously, the Moon is 1/6 G but getting back and forth is a long way in zero-G.

First of all have to say I really enjoyed your review. This watch came out after I had picked up a Bulova Marine Star which I so, and still do love. But this watch has so much history and is just so over the top cool. The look is aces, legible, black and white and frankly looks incredible. I ordered mine just a month ago and I have to say I agree with all of your thoughts. Barton straps on order, and also worried about the crystal. But this watch, for the price deserves to be worn and shown. I'm very thankful to Bulova for making this and doing it at a price point a humble person like me can afford. This is another watch that for the dough, to me, stands right up there and so punches above it's class. I love it.
@tracywilkinson1820
@tracywilkinson1820 3 жыл бұрын
The watch worn on the moon was I think a 40mm. It was actually a Universal Geneve tri compax movement that Bulova cased, it was manual wind not automatic as you stated, as is the speedmaster. The timepiece Bulova officially submitted for NASA testing was a pocket watch, so it was removed from consideration. John Glenn wore a Heuer stopwatch on a homemade strap on Frendship 7, so it's not as unusual as it might seem at first. Interestingly, Bulova made the mission timer on both the CM and the LM, the latter of which failed on AP11 causing Armstrong to leave his Speedmaster aboard Eagle during the EVA, making Buzz's speedmaster the 1st watch worn on the moon. This is a giant watch. I have larger wrists and even so, it on the big side. I bought it because of the really cool story. From what I understand, Col Scott put it away in his safe after the mission and NASA kinda put a lid on him after the stamp scandal when they returned home and discouraged him from profiting from it further. Selling the watch or endorsing it would have done that. I've owned mine a few years and it's an interesting companion to my Speedmaster Professional. I dinged the side of the crystal the first few days after I got it, but so far that's the only time. I go through phases when I don't touch it for months, then I'll put it back into rotation for a while, typically on different strap. I've worn it on a rally strap mostly (that I bought for my speedy), but now I have it on a simple OD nylon seiko two piece strap I bought on Amazon for $20, and I get lots of compliments on it so I think we have a winner. I've often thought of selling it or gifting it since it sees only occasional wrist time, but I'm in a phase now that it wears well and I like more than I have. I think I'll keep it :) I do wish it was smaller. And I'd like it if it came with the dial that's on the subsequent black case version, with the original font and the no date window (which I have never set, it's so small and I did not know it was there the first year or two I owned it). These are really my only complaints on what is truly a lovely and interesting piece in my small collection. It is in fact very very accurate, the pushers are smooth and the chrono is crisp in operation. Oh! If you get it, you choose between the bracelet version or the strap version. The holes in the lugs are different or something, so the bracelet version stays on the bracelet it came on.. I did not care much for the straps that came with mine, but like the speedy they are strap monsters and you can easily put it on something else like I have done.

I like Chronographs, one of my first decent watches 17 year's ago was the Speedmaster Moon and about 3yrs ago I was looking for some more 'moon' watches, looked at the Seiko but they were either too dodgy/expensive for the correct model and I then found the Bulova, loved the story (don't believe a word of it) and the look of the watch. Imported one from the USA to the UK via Amazon for about $250. I love the watch, I like decent quartz movements. the ease of use the accuracy, the detailing on the watch dial and layout is really well done. The watch wears smaller/better on a 3rd party NATO the two OE straps look nice but don't allow the watch to 'sit' properly. I do not like the polished or PVD versions. As ever it is all about branding for many watch wearers and if this had a different name on the dial it would be sold at x5+ the price The presentation box is cool and for the money paid the watch has prescence, provenance and great value.

I've handled both and I have to say that even though the Speedmaster has a much better finish and nicer surfaces, the Bulova did feel a lot more solid and durable on the bracelet. Two kinds of quality I guess.

Yeah, I saw another video about the original they were auctioning off, and it was interesting how this one was specifically designed by Bulova in a (failed) attempt to get NASA to switch to using an American watch for the moon missions. They mentioned the pushers as a conscious design choice for that reason. Not that it's possible to tell, but the footage in the background is actually David Scott on the Apollo 15 mission, probably wearing the Bulova prototype.

I recently discovered that there is another variant of this Lunar Pilot, the 96A225. It features a highly polished case and is 2mm thicker, otherwise the two are identical. The polished version has a real look of refinement, lacks the date complication and features the period correct Bulova font. I'm only mentioning this second model as I didn't even know that it is available when I ordered the 96B251, which IS a very good looking watch. However, I may have ordered this model instead, so if you like the look of a polished case, as I certainly do, it's good to know that you'd have a choice. Also, the 96A225 is listed on Amazon Prime for $83.97 less than the 96B251. It's a steal at $316.00 USD. Decisions, decisions!

I really enjoyed the video. I’m a major fanboy of the Lunar Pro. Mine came with a high-polish case which I didn’t care for. I found someone to give it a satin polish which gave it a more authentic look. I was surprised that your video didn’t mention the great engraving on the back that really ramps up the association with Apollo XV. Also, you may not be aware that the 262khz movement was developed by Bulova for the entire space program and was used extensively in equipment requiring precision timing, including the Command modules as well as equipment on the ground. Given NASA’s use of Bulova timing devices it’s surprising that they didn’t go with Bulova watches for the astronauts, and they don’t make a bigger deal about the use of the 262 in the Space Program. Again, great video!

Very nice video. I especially enjoyed your in depth look at the features ie; the complications of the 3 sub dials but also multi level characteristics of the main dial itself. I have recently purchased the 96B251 and, like you've mentioned, I don't particularly like either of the two straps which came with the watch. (Nice to have to complete the set, but not to necessarily wear.) So I will be installing the Strapcode Miltat Super Engineer II. I think the bracelet's brushed finish will compliment the case's bead blasted look. Thank you for this well produced post!

Hi Dave & fellow Subs. I literally just peeled the stickers off my Bulova Luna Pilot 2 hours ago!, so I had to rewatch this fine review! First thoughts? It's BIG! I'm not really used to watches that fully encompass my wrist; I measure in at 8 1/4" and wear 38's and mostly 40mm pieces. The lug to lug distance is truly imposing, but it wears very comfortably on the leather, which is melding nicely after just a few quick hours. I haven't tried the 'NASA' strap yet, so I have something else to look forward to! I'm very impressed with everything from the box and general presentation to the quality of the finishing. The dial is a pure piece of artistry in design and finishing. The legibility is ridiculously good. Even the leather strap, which cops flack in many reviews, is a pleasant surprise (even though I will be swapping it out for nice slab of quality dark brown leather). My only niggle is that my chronograph hand isn't aligned perfectly - just a touch off centre. Of course it's only noticeable when I look for it,...but none of us like that. We really don't. But I'm sure I'll get past it in a few days and in a year I'll be fond of this little imperfection! So all in all, a big 👍🏼. This is my 2nd chronograph with serious ties to the history of space travel. A month or so ago I bought my 'Strela Cosmograph'. A limited edition (of 200) re-issue (in mecha-quartz) of the watch worn by Alexi Leonov during man's 1st ever EVA /Space Walk on 18 March 1965 during the USSR's Voshtok II mission. They were made by Julian Kauffman from the Poljot24.de website under licence from Strela. That too is a fine and very affordable watch with genuine space travel pedigree and well worth checking out. He's an independent operator who has some rarely seen watches at some really affordable prices. No : I'm not affiliated with him in any way,shape or form. I just think he's a very nice man running a small 2 man operation somewhere in Germany selling really cool and really accessible watches. If you are a fan of Dave's channel you'll probably be a fan of Julians website. 🙂

Sotiris Vramis - I've sorta got used to it. I'm not the most OCD guy in the world and It sort of makes the piece mine. As per, this is the most expensive quartz chronograph I own by a mile (and I own 4, 5 if you count Mecha-Quartz.) and it's the only one with the problem. A good argument to follow an affordable watch channel right there! And I'm guessing by micro -adjust you mean manually lining up the hand with rapid clicks of the start / stop pusher?

I own both the Omega moon as well as this one. yes, Omega is better but not fair to compare a 5k+ watch to a $500 piece. I've had my Bulova moon since release... back when they could call it a moon watch, now "lunar pilot". anyway, great time piece. it's very well put together, surprisingly so. gorgeous design, very well executed, and ofcourse a very interesting history/story behind it. If you have interest in the moon landings, I think it's a worthy addition to anyone's collection. I have a 6.5" wrist and I think it looks fine. I have mine on a brown racing strap and it's an absolute knock out. oh and I'm still on the original battery. still going... and yes, I use the chrono function alot.

Difference between this watch and the Speedmaster: Hype and brand label. Bulova is a great watch company as it is, but Omega makes their money, like Rolex, on branding. No saphire crystal for 10 times the price, and only winding. The Bulova gives you saphire and a state of the art quartz mvmt for 1/10 the price. Easy choice.

Great video and great watch. i received mine just a few days ago. Got it for under 300$ on Amazon. I keep hearing about the size issue but for me being 6`3 with large hands and wrists, its a perfect size. i immidiately swapped for the enclosed NATO strap since I could barely secure the original one in the first hole. A slightly longer strap would be appreciated! I also own a Bulova Presicionist with the curved crystal. Its an even more substantial piece but, again, fits us bigger guys quite perfect. Thanks!

I think it's a great chronograph for the price ($325), I also like the Seiko SNA411 ($225) and the Casio EF-547D ($100). But the Bulova is clearly much better than the other two. You get sapphire, blue lume, better quartz movement, more precise chronograph function, better box and accessories). The Seiko has a slide rule and a 200m water resistance, though. Curiously each is a homage of a better known watch: Speedmaster, Navitimer and the Carrera Chrono of 2010, respectively.

I had this watch .............. a fantastic watch that wears really comfortable and is incredibly accurate thanks to Bulova´s advanced quartz movement. One thing to be aware of though - If you want to be able to have the option to wear the watch on both a strap and the fantastic Bulova bracelet, you MUST buy the braclet version from start. I bought the strap version (got a great deal) planning to buy a bracelet later - however, to my dismay I found out that the holes for the springbars are placed differently on the strap version than on the bracelet version making it IMPOSSIBLE TO FIT A BRACELET ON THE STRAP VERSION afterwards !! For that reason I sold the watch again after a couple of months. It looks good on a black Marine Nationale strap with a red center stripe, though - I have that strap from Erika´s originals and it makes the watch even more comfortable !!

IDK perhaps I have been wearing a Garmin Fenix 3 since I began running Altra's in '15. It seem small compared to the Garmin. That being said I felt that it was kinda small to me. Seems like a nice watch. My watch has a leather NATO style band. I thinks I am going to get another type of band. I spent a little more by getting it from Macy's. You can find it cheaper. I have a Bulova Sea King which I absolutely love, and I was thinking of saving up for the lunar Pilot, but I notice it seems to have the same movement as the Sea King(except for a date window), For some reason that is making me hesitate. I don't know why because some expensive watches use a common movement, but being familiar with the movement makes it almost not a new(to me) watch.

I added a Beads of Rice bracelet that REALLY makes this watch pop! I found the Omega to be a little harder to read than this Bulova. And to be honest, the 262 kHz movement is pretty amazing.

I have the black edition and it's a great watch. First point...IT IS NOT TOO BIG! Okay I have a 6.5" wrist (just) and its fine. The black finish is amazing and it feels such a solid watch, no need to worry about this one. The timing accuracy is amazing. Makes any automatic or manual feel like a antique toy in terms of "accurate timepiece". It's funny after wearing automatics, having a watch that keep spot on time is a real thrill. The only three things I would change is improve the lume, it's a bit pathetic, yes it lasts a while but you really have to 'charge it up'. Give all models the plain Bulova logo and make it 22mm for the strap.

I always wanted an Omega Speedmaster, but that real-deal moonwatch was mechanical (manual) wind (I'm forgetful) and the domed Hessalite (plastic) crystal was easily scratched (and apparently subject to total failure). So I bought a metal bracelet edition of David Scott's Bulova "Lunar Pilot" Moon Watch which came in handy for him when the crystal popped right off his "Speedy" on Apollo 15. After all, the Bulova replica had the latest 262 mhz crystal freq counter, so it just had to be more accurate. I've even got an old vintage tuning-fork Spaceview Bulova, so I am all about accuracy. This was to be a watch I would use regularly, especially when my Apple watch is on the charger, which is most every night. (Who else, besides Apple, makes a gizmo that has to be charged at least 3 time a week, but can't be used while it's being charged?) But then I digress. This was a big deal to me. I got the version with the metal bracelet and with the big velcro space-suit band, and the little took-kit for changing them out. It looked like a real The big disappointment was: the Bulova's luminosity in the hands and dial is virtually non-existent. So much for a night-watch. I've heard others complain of this. I should have done more research. I want to know what time it is when it's dark too. Is that asking too much? When it comes to watches, I follow Gene Krantz's NASA mission control rule # 1: failure is not an option. So I'm back to using a. 29-year old TAG/Heuer SEL that does much better, not only with hand/dial luminosity (which I tested), but also in several other ways: 1) The Heuer allows me to change time zones forward or backward without freezing the seconds and thus losing precise time sync ala the Bulova. What's the point of 262 mhz? 2) The Heuer has an hour hand that's shaped different than the minute hand, whereas the Bulova has identical width hands and an hour hand that virtually touches dial (too long) dial markers at 1,2,4,5,7,8,10 & 1, making it look like a minute hand. 3) The Heuer has a bigger date window, not set at a 45 degree angle, and not recessed so that it's often obscured by the shadow of the dial, ala the Bulova. 4) The Heuer has a bracelet that not only lets you change the number of links, but also lets you fine tune the overall length in less than full-link increments. 5) The Heuer is not a mish/mash of satin vs. brushed vs polished stainless steel. It's a forward looking design with it's own distinguishable bracelet - quite well integrated. 6) The Heuer's crystal is slightly recessed, and thus the edges are not exposed to being chipped, as apposed to the ugly and protruding sandblasted edge of the Bulova's crystal. 7) The Heuer is certified to 200 maters, not just 50 meters like the Bulova, which basically disqualifies the Bulova as a dive watch. 8) The Heuer starts skipping second hand movement to show battery exhaustion. The more seconds skipped, the weaker the battery. The Bulova (per the manual) just stops with no warning. Period. Like a car that just runs out of gas, with no warning indication. 9) The Heuer is apparently better sealed, whereas the Bulova hss 4 tiny slotted/bevel-head screws on the back, near the stem and the stopwatch pushbuttons. This is certainly four cases of opportunity for failure from a case integrity point of view, and possibly explains the 50 meter rating. 10) The Heuer lets me re-sync the watch to the time signal, because I can use the stopwatch as a reference to the time signal, and the stopwatch function is not killed on the 2nd stem stop, which is necessary on most watches for everything except a date advance. 11) The Heuer has the adjustable outer bezel event timer with ratchet mechanism. I realize that this is a key dive watch function, and the Bulova is clearly not a dive watch, but the functionality does come in handy as an easy-to-interpret event timer. As far as the accuracy - I literally can't tell the difference after 3 months. Both were set to the WWV radio signal, and are still less than a fraction of a second different. Other than that, I like the Bulova as a addition to my collection of space stuff and watches, but not enough to wear it every day, So 'll go with my 1990 vintage "Aryton Senna" watch (which still works like a champ 3 decades on) instead of a 2019 replica of David Scott's back-up watch from 58 years ago.

Went back and watch this I’m now buying the smaller version(finally!). I owned this watch for a short period of time and I really wanted it to fit… I had a larger than average wrist and it just simply was too large. It sits flat on the wrist and has an extremely long lug to lug. It was simply unwearable an overhang on both sides of the wrist. It’s obvious that they finally listened and have now made a more wearable model!

I gave it a shot on my frail 6 1/4 inch wrist today, thinking it'll look stupid anyway... 'Lo and behold, it was quite alright! Granted it would've been better in a smaller package, but I didn't mind it that much anymore (at least for this particular watch)! Maybe it's the oval shape of my wrist? Or is it the downward sloping case? I don't really know what exactly makes wearing this watch possible, but now I'm seriously considering adding this watch to my collection! My point is, if you see one in a mall or something, do try it on. It just might work out for you!

The Seagull 1963 was the other Chronograph I seriously considered. But I just really liked the history and style of the Bulova better, and I thought the uhf quartz movement would be more reliable. But if I were going to get a second chronograph in this price range, that Sea Gull would probably be at the top of my list. I love th Baltic too, but it's pushing a little higher than I'm willing to pay. Their Aquascaphe on the other hand... that's sort of tempting.

@@JusttheWatch indeed.. the Bulova is great, and atleast is has some lumination, the Sea Gull is less practical at low light conditions and the 1963 history is actually made up.. since it doesn't really resemble the original Chinese pilot watch.

I'm so intrigued by that high frequency quartz movement. I generally stay away from quartz watches unless there's something special about them (i.e. the legacy of Timex, solar quartz watches, or Bulova's high frequency quartz with hand sweep). Unfortunately, I have tiny wrists, at just about 6.75 inches. The Lunar Pilot is beautiful, I love the hand sweep, etc., but it's just too big. I have an Invicta Pro Diver on my wrist right now, and it's 48mm lug-to-lug, and it's just a hair below too big. I know the Precisionist is cheaper, smaller, and has the same movement, which is what I'm most intrigued by.

I had coffee today with a watch collector/trader friend wearing this watch and asked him about it. (which is why I'm here checking reviews). He has 30 watches, some quartz... some automatic. While he appreciates the intricate engineering that goes into automatic, he finds they can lose up to 2 minutes per month. He says his quartz watches may lose up to 5 seconds per month, so it's quartz all the way for him. To each his own, right?

I have this watch. I like it, but I wish the Chrono was 30 min instead of 60, that is, so the markings could have been further spaced out (pun not intended) to provide better legibility. I find it difficult to see which exact minute I’m counting. The minute sub dial also sweeps, and I think a ticking minute counter would have provided better accuracy as well. But overall I love the piece. Good review!

What's the astronaut name? LOL. Yes, Commander Jack Swigert, Apollo 13, wore the Rolex GMT under his space suit with the Omega Speedy strapped to the outside of the suit. But the Rolex was not considered life-saving equipment since it was only used to tell time. When Dave Scott's Speedy failed him while on the Lunar Rover, the Bulova became the only other watch on the moon to serve as life-saving equipment, and not just as decoration. Such a shame that NASA kept it a secret for decades, depriving Bulova from considerable fortune for its heroic watch. But nobody wanted Omega to be branded of needing another company to back up its equipment failures. I have ordered a Bulova Lunar Pilot Limited Edition and will be with me in a week. YAY! Ultimately, I think the story with Dave Scott and Bulova is a more interesting and important than the stories of the Omega or the Rolex.
