Do you need to go to school to become an automotive technician?
I immediately started working as a mechanic after graduation. Some people go to a vocational or technology school to learn about automotive repair once they graduate from high school, but I went straight into fixing cars because I already knew a lot about them.
I knew the owner of the garage, so it wasn’t a problem to get a job there after graduation. I gradually got more hours as I worked longer and proved my skills. If I could go back, I might have gotten a certification in diesel repair - working on big trucks earns more money than regular cars.
One time I installed a transmission backwards on a foreign car and it completely destroyed the drive train. It was an expensive repair and required an extra two weeks to fix. I was pretty embarrassed that day.
I once had someone offer to pay for repairs in cookies and pies! She was a very sweet older woman who lived on a fixed income. She needed a relatively minor repair, so we donated the labor for free. It really helped her out in a tight spot.
I enjoy working with my hands and helping people keep their cars in excellent condition. I feel good when I solve difficult problems with cars, like finding something wrong that other mechanics had overlooked.
Customers can be extremely demanding sometimes. We occasionally have people bring in cars for service then insist we broke something in the car during repairs. They are usually just trying to scare us into providing free service.
My job is not very stressful. We take our time and try to do a good job on every repair. I maintain a healthy work-life balance.
I make about $63,000 per year. I think I am paid enough, and I feel so thankful to have that salary without a college degree.
Be prepared to work few hours at a garage when you first start. My first few years of work were a steep learning curve, and only after I proved myself did I start getting better hours.
I would like to buy the garage and run it myself. I haven’t done it yet because the machinery and parts are so expensive, but I would love to own my own business.

For those who are looking for mechnic stuff without school.... 10 years ago I walked into my local marine repair shop and asked the manager if I could volunteer there a few days and clean the shop and do some basic things if they would teach me about being a boat mechanic. 2 weeks later he was letting me to standard maintenance with a mechanic watching me and after a month they offered me a position being an "intern" where I just did the oil changes and cleaning motors and helping the mechnics out. Now I'm a full time mechanic and do everything under the sun! An education means a lot to people NOT in this world, experience and a WILLINGNESS TO WORK and ATTITUDE TO WORKING speaks far louder than any mechanics degree. It's a lot like Doctors, all that schooling didn't help you if you can't save anyone

@@theknight45videos When I started out as a lube tech for valvoline, my tools would get stolen damn near every day and I knew who was taking them. When I asked my boss to do something about it he said that he would never do such a thing and that I should keep better track of my tools. I went over into my co workers bay and found my tools laying on top of his box, and When I confronted him about it I got laid off. I wanted to take them to court over losing my job and over $600 in tools but I was already in so much debt that I couldnt spend time and money on that. I moved passed that and left everything behind and went on to a toyota dealer as a flat rate tech and I couldnt be happier. Its all about thinking where you want to be in the future, had I completely quit this business I would probably be stuck in trade school for something i didnt wanna do or flipping whoppers.

I never went to trade school or UTI. Worked at an America's Tire as a tire tech for 3 years. Took a chance and applied to a luxury dealer nearby. A few months later, they call me and got hired as an apprentice. It's been 7 years since I've completed my apprenticeship. I'm eternally grateful for the opportunity the fixed ops director gave me and the mentor tech who showed me the ropes. A good attitude and will to learn goes a long way.

You guys there is so much ways to get experience. Save your money and do your own basic maintenance. Go to the junk yards and take the cars apart. Do research about how a car works, how parts work. Then put it as skills on your resume. Get into a shop and start out scrubbing the floor. If you don't want to do all this to be a tech/mechanic maybe you should find something youre passionate about because if you really want this you are going to work on cars regardless of a job or not. I currently work PT at autozone it's a good place to get knowledge if you already know the basics because you learn products best for a car, oil, you change batteries, lights, and you learn all the parts of a car.

I've been a car girl for my whole life. My dad's a big car guy so he got me into that...for a while I was all about the exterior. The glitz and glam and sleek designs. I designed my own concept cars and even sent some designs to major car companies when I was in middle school in the mid 2000s. Now I'm almost 27 and I'm enrolling myself in Penn Foster online automotive school. People are calling it a toilet paper degree....I'm calling it a first step forward. As I've matured, I've fallen in love with the complexity and simultaneous simplicity of engines. I've fallen in love with computers and the brilliant minds behind them. And I've never wanted anything more than to speak the language of the vehicle...I started teaching mechanics to myself on my own, so school is a breeze. All I can say is...I'm happy to be following my heart. People always discouraged me, telling me shops wouldn't hire a female. Let me show up and fix something major and let them see my skill.

You don’t have to go to school to be a mechanic, I was the kid that fixed my own bike, took apart flash lights to see how they worked, took apart VHS tapes to figure them out. My dad saw I had a natural curiosity on how stuff works and taught me a lot. Then my friends dads would teach us stuff, how to change a clutch and braking and electrical systems. Old school mechanics tricks and it just grew from there. You have to be naturally curious about machinery if being a mechanic will be right for you.

Especially if you get an assc degree, if you were to hurt yourself and have a life change afterwards, or just get bored of being a mechanic. You can go back to school only for 2 more years, maybe less maybe a bit more and get a bachelor's in something else

I'm homeless in my own truck and I've been working and living in vehicles since I was 19. Work is not so much attitude as it is aptitude. Sometimes mechanics make me go, " wait what the fuck did you just say?" Even though I don't I try to be easy on people. If I could sign up I would but I'm trying to go to the navy and I don't think your out in Colorado. I've pulled and replaced clutches, done break work even worked on broken calipers on the road. replaced them on emergency forcefully. With some basic physics, and a second hand, you can do it. It requires a passion for fixing things, a mechanically oriented mind. From there it’s about gaining experience while not behaving as if the “cranky old guy,” that’s been there for 20 years, who’s helping train you, should learn from you. I see that far too often. They usually end up as KZfaqrs making videos about how bad mechanics are.

Too bad most people don’t hire girls though. I’ve always wanted to be a mechanic, I love learning how things work... I even like taking the old parts out and taking them apart just to see what they are made of and how they work. I know a little bit here and a little bit there but not enough to do anything on my own. I have a actually been donating my time and helping a family friend at his job working on Mack trucks and front end loaders then going to his personal garage to do little side jobs . I want nothing more than to be a mechanic... but it’s extremely hard when you’re a girl trying to do a “mans” job.

I'd love to get into this work. Does anyone know of something around Woodstock Georgia where I could start out helping around a shop and eventually become a mechanic? It's my dream job to work on cars and trucks. I've been obsessed with anything on wheels since I was young, especially cars and trucks, and I have a massive hunger to learn by doing instead of by books, I've never learned things that way like I do hands on learning. I currently work in construction, previously worked in different factories up north, and also worked with developmentally disabled adults as a DSP. I have pride in my attention to detail and doing things the right way and not half assing work, I take pride in doing the job right and seeing the results. I want to be a mechanic and see my work be appreciated by clients.

Wow. I saw this whole video. I agree with alot of this but im a manager in retail. I think this transfers very well to retail. In the screening process you don't till 3 or 6 months later exactly who this person is. Because they are acting the first 30 or 60 days. Alot of smart mechanics, aren't always nice mechanics. Nice mechanics that are not that smart is sometimes, the route you got to go with so that you can avoid dealing with the arrogant mechanic that knows alot. Looking are resume and trying to see they worked a while wherever they applied. All of these are good things, but through it all, hiring someone new is always a risk.

Don't waste your money. Fixing automobiles is not rocket science. Go spend a couple hundred bucks some used automotive textbooks, get a set of decent hand tools and start learning. If you get stuck, bring your car to a pro to get fixed and ask him if you can pick his brain afterwards. Any decent mechanic is going to be willing to explain things to you. Network on social media and find some mechanic friends near you. Don't waste your money on school. Especially UTI.

It's not meant to belittle mechanics as professional mechanics who did all the studying are really smart people and know the ins and outs of a car, the science, physics, chemistry, electronics of everything related to cars......but in terms of just doing maintenance like changing oil, replacing parts, and other stuff like that, it's really not that hard....anyone could literally learn it and do it themselves without any education or tuition fees...the hard part is just getting access to stuff like having the proper tools and the work space to do the work. If you want to be a scientist of cars, yes, schooling, but you want to just fix up stuff on cars, all you need is the opportunity for someone to give you.

@@bundysgarage I do agree, it's not for EVERYONE. I just meant that anyone can learn how to do most of your own car maintenance (if they had the opportunity), but not that everyone would do it well. I have zero training in anything to do with cars and auto mechanics, yet simply from watching videos, looking at pictures, reading tutorials, I can do things like change my own oil, change my own tires, brake pads, light bulbs, fuses, air intakes, even learned how to remove and change door handles and sideview mirrors, and temporarily fix up a broken exhaust system. I'm by no means a handyman because I can't fix anything around the house if my life depended on it, but it just goes to show, that people can learn how to do it, if only someone would show them how, without having to have a university degree, license or certification worth thousands of dollars. But I guess in all things in life, it all comes to the haves and have nots, those who know and those who don't know...and people just pay money to someone else who knows how to do something even if it's as easy as 1,2,3, but the other person wouldn't know it.
@breakaway2x
@breakaway2x 4 жыл бұрын
but don't get me wrong...I have a great appreciation and respect for mechanics or anyone who knows how to fix things...I love that skill. It's sad that the world we coming to is just about "replacing things" rather than trying to fix things. I've always been more of a fixer. I want to learn how to fix things and it just seems right when you have the ability to fix things and take care of things rather than to have your head in the sand and just pay money because you can afford to. I'm having my own issues recently with my VW Scirocco 2.0 TFSI APR Stage 2+.....each winter I have the cold start issues, but it only occurs in cold seasons. It idles roughly for about 60 seconds or until the coolant temp reaches 20 celsius then it idles smooth and fine....drives fine for the rest of the day and even restarting is no problem on a warm engine. It only seems to be an issue if I left the car parked 8 hours or longer. Some suggested it could be an RFD (runner flap delete) without being properly calibrated/ecu tuned to resolve the issue (APR issue). I also have negative long term fuel trims around -18 to -19%. It's like detective work. I have no real experience with these sort of things but have been reading and watching as many videos as I could the last few months. I'm not sure if there's a leak somewhere or if it has anything to do with MAF sensor, HPFP, DV, EVAP related components, or leaky fuel injector? I have new spark plugs, new coils, new fuel filter, oil change, new air filter, fuel rail pressure normal at about 49-50 bar.....a tuning shop said they want to keep my car for 3 days to find the issue.....i don't like the sound of leaving it for 3 days...i'd prefer to be there in person to see what they do and what kinds of tests they want to perform....what do you think?
