сусідко, сусідко. Ukrainian song played on a restored Scandalli Scott Wood accordion

Just finished restoring this accordion, Wow! A Ukrainian song about borrowing a sieve from a neighbour. It reminds me of the hardships of not so long ago. I have added a 100 year old photo of a branch of my Ukrainian family, they worked their smallholding and lived off the land, and maybe sang this song.

Thank you. I found this 2022. My Dad had played accordion when I was a child. His mother (she passed at age 38 from TB) was of Ukrainian descent, she was born here but her brothers, Dad’s uncles, who came to the US (Pennsylvania) before she was born, later on they would take Dad to the Orthodox church, he especially remembered Easter services. Later the family went to the local Catholic church. I wish I would have asked him more about all of this, and especially to have wished him to keep playing the accordion. Love the photos, you are so fortunate to have them. Praying for the people of Ukraine. 🙏🏼🕊🎶

Hi I am from Argentina South America Bunelik not know if you know where it is like that is not the issue, the issue is to use a translator to Spanish Translates into Ukrainian and I wanted to say that this topic is beyond excellent and wanted to congratulate you. сусідко= susìdko. The сусід -part means: neighbour. сусідко / cусідка; male / female neighbour. (Correct me if wrong.)

The similarity between this and Brahms' Hungarian dance No5 is obvious. I'm not sure of the relationship but maybe the Ukrainians borrowed more than just a sieve from their Hungarian neighbours?

Yes, maybe Basil - but I'm more inclined to think it was Brahms who did the borrowing.

Peejay01425 Very possible, as in the original song there is also a part about Hungarian woman who is asked to borrow a mirror. So mb it is a folk song from Ukrainian-Hugarian border.

Accordions South West This song had probably inspired the Hungarian composer and conductor of Slovak origin Béla Kéler (a.k.a Adalbert Paul von Kéler, 1820-1882) who had composed "Bartfai Emlék Csardas/Erinnerung an Bartfeld (Memory of Bardejov) Op.31" in 1858, much more earlier than Johannes Brahms who "Quoted" from this composition for his "Hungarian Dance No.5" nearly a decade later. Being a native of Bardejov town (which is currently in Slovakia and has historical names of "Bartfa" and "Bartfeld" in Hungarian and German) it seems inevitable for the Béla Kéler to hear the "Cусідко, Cусідко" from the Ukrainian and Rusyn inhabitants of the town during his years in his hometown, Bardejov. Currently the town of Bardejov still have inhabitants of Ukrainian and Rusyn origin. Basil hi there the relationship between Brahms and Ukrainians is that during the Austro Hungarian empire there was no borders between the other countries also Brahms being Jewish must have heard it in a Klezmer format borrowing the medley from trans Carpathian roots it is a song in Ukrainian but a dance in Hungarian so now you can call it a song and dance tune from pomahxomehko@yahoo.com
