Even tho the main character seems to be the white hair guy, I think that there isnt really a main character. Otherwise, if it were to choose a main character I would choose Dazai.

​@@lara._.8301 actually the white hair guy (Atsushi Nakajima) IS the protagonist (mc), and Dazai is the deuteragonist (second mc), although dazai is definitely more favoured by public audiences and probably the creator too. Dazai's character is the most complex in the entire series, coupled with his intelligence, skills, humour and charm allowed him to be the most outstanding character in the anime. he's actually my favourite character, but many people tend to overlook his many many flaws because of his looks and his abilities. Dazai's character development was mostly completed before atsushi came along, so dazai isn't the mc of the show. (if he was, bsd probably wouldn't be as interesting as it is because dazai is potrayed as funny, smart but also VERY mysterious and secretive, along with his darker colours that show later on) if dazai was the protagonist, bsd wouldn't be popular because: 1. the show would end even faster 2. little character development bcs dazai is already developed and nearly done developing in the _present arcs_ 3. atsushi's development is shown in the present while dazai's is shown in the past, keeping the viewers' need for more information on dazai alive ^pt3 is only possible because in both s2 and s3, dazai literally _owns_ the first few episodes, while atsushi is the main in the rest. this is a trend that lets the audience know that if they watch, they'll be able to find out a little more about dazai! notice how none of them are from dazai's pov. not a single episode. 4. if the show was from dazai's pov, it would be really, really draggy since dazai is mostly _bored at life_ and doesn't even have a _motivation to continue living_ (he now kinda does but thats another story). if you watched bsd with dazai as the mc, the show would be boring af because dazai wouldn't be his funny self (his pov: you can see that he's forcing himself to be funny = you won't find it funny. actually, it would probably be even more depressing), dazai's ability to guess everything would make the show crash because _there's no suspense_ atsushi is the first one to be introduced, and dazai the second. this may be questionable but if you watch the first episode, it's undoubtable that they're the main characters. the overlap of the storylines allow us to be intrigued by many different characters. even minor characters have their own special personality if you look closely into them. (like how tanizaki actually has anxiety, and is lowkey like akutagawa but its when it comes to his sister; or that kenji is extremely happy to the point is disturbing. these supporting characters actually have their own major flaws that aren't as prominent as e.g atsushi's trauma, or dazai's comical suicidal attitude towards life and his insane intelligence, both of which are also pointed out in the first ep.) dazai is actually the person helping atsushi and another guy (black hair with white tips) get their character development (yeah dazai is blamed for certain aspects of akutagawa's character). but you know, i love atsushi a lot too :) as the mc he is seriously underrated and people even find him annoying sometimes (i dont) omg im sorry that really came out of nowhere i just wanted to justify that dazai is the second main and atsushi is the main and why dazai cant be main HAHAEUWGIGhfiugwiguiygiew

He was an orphan before being taken in by the Agency. Yeah, the fact that I’ve read the entire manga and seen the entire anime is a bit unfair but you asked, so I answered.
