Same. It's annoying how many people think it's due to footwear. It's mostly genetic. The amount of doctors who also perpetuate the idea that it's due to footwear is pretty astounding given the evidence that it is largely due to genetics and flat feet etc which leads to bunions. A doctor in NYC I went to go see who has been doing surgery for decades straight up said it has nothing to do with wearing heels. If anything wearing flat shoes which allows for over pronation of your feet and puts stress on that joint is more problematic.

Yeah! I didn't know there was many reason to have bunions! Shopping for footwear has always been a problem for me, I have arched feet, and my bunions have not grown what so ever, I was just born with them 🤷🏻‍♀️

I must also say the hardest part of it is to manage the recovery, to rely on people. You cant drive, cant walk very good, cant cook cant go shopping groceries and so on.... I had the luck my girlfriend was with me and i thank her more than anything, managing everything for about 1-2 months. After 3 months and 1 week i was able to make my first step in the shower. But still Bunion surgery was the best thing i could do and recommend it if nothing else is helping your pain or aesthetic. I had pain but it was managable. Mine went from a mild variant (genetic, thanks mom) into a severe one cause of an accident in school back in the days. I then incorrectly charged it for weeks and had a bit of a limp when i was 13 years. I absolutely hated the look of it since i was only 24 (Im 26 now) years old and a male. The pain of the surgery itself was not painful at all, of course it is not the best feeling but pain can be very different from person to person. But i must say i was extremely dazed since we got good healthcare in Germany. Im also an Natural Bodybuilder since 16 years old. I still can Squat heavy, i can walk forever, sprint, jump etc. Only pain i have is on the non-operated foot were i have a mild hallux valgus with fallen arch.

I had my first bunion surgery nine years ago. It was an ideal recovery, however, it was very long (just like he said.) I don't regret it at all because the bunion was causing me pain. I just had my second surgery 2.5 weeks ago. It's been a very different experience. Same procedure as the first one but my pain level has been minimal. I'd call it more of a discomfort. I haven't needed narcotic pain meds at all, just Tylenol occasionally. I attribute a lot of this to the fact that I am in better shape now. I began doing yoga and have benefited both mentally and physically. I know I still have a long road to full recovery, but I'm on my way!

@@user-it2ld6ec1d I'm glad your husband has been supportive. My family has as well. I can't imagine what recovery would be like if they weren't. I think surgery is as much a mental thing as it is a physical thing which is why our moods are so greatly affected. My foot is still pretty swollen but I'm ready to start physical therapy and move on to the next phase. Stay strong and happy healing vibes!

I'm 37. I've had a bunion for as long as i can remember. My mom had one as well. Same right foot. My dad gave me high arches on top of that. I just saw a foot doctor yesterday to ask about surgery as i haven't had much luck with using splints, toe spreaders to attempt to naturally correct it. I'm constantly on my feet all day, i wear wide work boots and insoles for my high arches. I really don't want to do a surgery to correct it but I'm about at my wits end with it. My balance is messed up because on both feet I'm basically standing on tripods with my high arches.

Thank you SO much for this video. I have moderate bunions that are painful at times, and I found a doctor that does minimally invasive surgery, but he says he doesn't use screws or plates, only taping and splints. I am nervous about this because then, how does the bone hold up? I dont understand. He is very popular and was thinking about going to him, but this video made me rethink my decision. How can MIFS be done without screws? Im afraid i have more chances of the bunions coming bavk since they ate genetic, and I have somewhat of a flat foot. Any advice?

I had lapidus done, two screws and was told I could do full weight bearing after two weeks. That turned out to be a non union and broken screw.. Second surgery done seven months later, plate, screws, and bone graft put in, NO weight bearing whatsoever for three and a half months. Absolutely horrible. Just had hardware removal surgery in September and everything seems to be good so far. I think walking after only two weeks was NOT good advice given to me per my second opinion podiatrist.

Been advised by my surgeon not to take NSAID's for pain e.g. ibuprofen because they interfere with bone healing. Also recommend surgery if possible during winter months, very frustrating if you are a gardener and can't enjoy the gardening and lovely weather!!!! Also, request 2 surgical boots!!! One only causes lop sided walking which causes musculoskeletal problems. I needed to wear surgical boots for 7 weeks. Ideally also a pair for indoors and outdoors so you don't mess up your floor/ carpets.I had right foot done 4 years ago and have just had left one done. Recovery much slower this time and swelling and bruising much worse. I am 28 days post op. Patience is definitely wearing thin !!!

I’ve had a sore that won’t heal on my second toe due to the big toe pressing against it ( I’ve had the sore for about three months) I wear steel toed shoes at work. I don’t know how to get this sore to heal I have to keep a bandage on my second toe where the sore is. I have not seen a doctor yet due to I am starting this job as a Full time employee soon. I need some sort of temporary fix, what can I do? Thank You in advance (I also do not have diabetes)

Imagine being 34 and having foot/toe problems because of a stroke. That's my reality, I've had hammer toe correction with a bunionectomy (plate/fusion). Really that's my only problem that I have, the inability to walk is debilitating.. I couldn't walk pre surgery because my small toes were hammering 24/7 and my big toe was pointing almost straight up all the time and crossing the 2nd and 3rd toe, sometimes pushing down on them. Surgery has straightened my toes out and am 3 months post surgery, all pins removed and I have been walking primarily on my heel. I seem to have forgotten how to roll weight through my ankle/foot to walk normally.. it has been 2 years since I've actually walked normally so I'm wondering if my issue is more mental than physical at this point. My big toe has been really swollen and occasional soreness. I have like a mental block or anxiety when trying to put weight down on the middle/front of my affected foot. Would really like to be able to walk again when fully recovered. I have been seeing a specialist in podiatry but I know my underlying condition isn't at the foot, the foot problem is just a symptom, but is also debilitating. I miss life.

I’m female and have bunions and have never worn heels or narrow shoes. My parents do not have bunions. I was never obese. The bunions started in my early 30s. It’s because of the crap diet I ate and am now paying for it in many ways. I’ve cleaned up my diet (a proper human diet now) and a lot of symptoms are gone (bunions no longer painful/throb) but I will get surgery to fix them because I don’t like the way my feet look.

Also, it is crazy how many and how high various fees, taxes, insurance payments, license fees, and other payments are required from doctors by the government, insurance, various organizations, pharmaceutical companies, and suppliers in the USA. Most of these fees and payments are not required from people working in other professions. Unfortunately, the ugly truth is, that doctors to stay in business have to pass these costs to patients.
