I detect no peat at all in this offering, excellent whisky none the less. Great to see the current bottling has maintained a high quality experience for an entry level bottle...for newbies and seasoned drinkers. Head to head it against the 18. Holds up real well.

I’ve only ever had samples of the 12 & 18 but do have a 28 year aged Alexander Murray bottling of a cask strength Bunnahabhain that’s a sherry bomb to end all sherry bombs, being batched the same way as the 12 being ex-bourbon & ex-sherry, so damn good.

I'm on a Quest to find a decent substitute for HIghland Park's Einar, one of the 'warrior series' that are travel specials. I'd started with Laphroiag 10 and didn't like its 'in your face' peatiness. I wanted the 'hint' of peat I got with HP Einar. I took the plunge and opted for a bottle of Lagavulin 16, which was a distinct improvement over the Laphroiag 10, but was still too much for my palate. So, I picked up a bottle of Bunnahabhain 12 and, although it still has to prove to me that it has any peatiness at all, it has claimed the #3 spot in my collection, as it appeals to my sherry cask tastes.

Bunnahabhain 12 is £30 a bottle in the U.K. That is fantastic. Can't really call it typically Islay but lovely all the same. It's a problem for Bunnahabhain because I'd rather buy three of these than an 18 and so on. The best drink in the entire Valdespino sherry range is their inexpensive Inocente fantastic fino and I think the Bunnahabhain 12 is their flagship as well. Both companies need a best selling winner to do all the rest. Cheers Erik. WT

Part-time bourbon drinker for 10+ years then got into Irish this past May. Really love Irish -- 3 different Redbreasts, 4 Teelings, Green Spot plus a few lower shelf ones. Yummy!! Then I saw this video and a couple others on Bunn-12 which caused me to buy my first Scotch. A couple nights with this and I really love it. Already looking for other Scotch's that I may like. Hi Erik. I so enjoy your thoughts. I´d like to ask, as I´m pretty new to Islay whisky, how is the peet in this Bunna compared to Caol Ila 12 yr old? I´m a total peethead and was surprised to find out I liked Caol Ila. My first sip of Caol Ila was not good for me but about a week later I enjoyed it very much even though it did´nt have that peet kick. Maybe my taste buds are getting better. I will get this Bunnah bottle for sure at some point.This Q is for anybody by the by. Cheers to all:)

I still haven't gotten around to Bowmore, but I've had the other three and Laphroaig 10 is my pick as the best of the bunch by far. Ledaig 10 would be my second favorite in this price range (the cost runs between the Ardbeg and the Bunna), but it's not as easy to find.

Igor, Bunnahabhain doesn't fall into the Islay peated profile despite being from Islay. It's a very very lightly peated, sherried, unique animal and shouldn't be compared with those you mentioned in nose palate or finish.

Barrel char notes coming through maybe but no peat.
@MrChristopherMolloy
@MrChristopherMolloy 4 жыл бұрын
@@WhiskyMystery With all due respect, it's not "maybe", it's unpeated. As for barrel char, as far as I'm concerned "char" (i.e. carbon) is flavorless and is used in filtration (like in home water filters) to remove flavor, it's a subtractive factor in whisky production. It's a notion bourbon drinkers have come up with to distinguish one bourbon from another (not an easy task apples to apples) and to justify overspending on that spirit (which I very much enjoy). Cheers! 😁

Chris Molloy char in a barrel is absolutely not flavorless. Char is not activated charcoal and caramelization is one of the most complex flavor profiles period usually represented by the brown sugar caramel flavors. It’s just science.
@Jaysthename

This is my LEAST favorite single-malt whisky of all time. It is a syrupy sugar bomb barely one step removed from Drambuie and I can hardly believe it isn't actually a liqueur itself. Subjective opinion aside, I don't disagree with the adjectives you repeatedly mention in the review: "fig, dates, raisins, caramel, chocolate", as well as comparing it to baklava and "cinnamon on a pastry" with "candy bar character". Yes, the finish lasts forever, but so does the finish on a spoonful of maple syrup, too. How you could mention Macallan in comparison is beyond me. I bought a bottle, and then I never bought another bottle, and I will never buy another bottle. For this money, I think one would be much better off getting Laphroaig 10, which is a true smoky, peaty Islay with a bit of sweetness, but to each their own
@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies

You are in the minority opinion on this one. Everyone I have ever spoken to LOVES the Bunnahabhain 12.
@Jaysthename
@Jaysthename 3 жыл бұрын
@@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies Yes, I noticed that in the comments. I just felt like the minority opinion should be expressed because I'm truly mystified over the appeal (or over why I can't stand it), especially since we seem to agree on others (Laphroaig, Lagavulin, etc.). I'm glad folks who have bought it are truly enjoying it, though.
@EuropaWill
@EuropaWill 2 жыл бұрын
James, how many single malts have you had at the point you made this comment?
@Jaysthename
@Jaysthename 2 жыл бұрын
@@EuropaWill I estimate I had about 50 to 75 different single malts at the time I posted, across a roughly 10-year period of drinking scotch whisky. From 10/15/18-year verticals of Speysiders such as Glenlivet and Glenfiddich as well as some more sherried offerings such as Macallan 12 and 18, smoky drams such as Ardbeg 10, Ledaig 10 and Lagavulin 16, to "outliers" such a half dozen different Springbank whiskies and one or two Lowland drams, I've had an extensive and well-rounded education in single malts (and a few blends as well). To this day, the Bunnahabhain 12 still remains my LEAST favorite, and perhaps the only one I would turn down. Perhaps I had a bottle from a bad batch, but it was truly that unpleasant for me.
@EuropaWill
@EuropaWill 2 жыл бұрын
@@Jaysthename Thanks for the context. There is no accounting for a person's preference in taste, though you may have had a bad example or you may have eaten something super salty prior to trying it. I've had the experience that if you "burn" your tongue with too much salt earlier in the day from a meal like salty soup or chips, that will alter your sense of taste for quite a while, up to a few days in some cases. I've noticed that when my tongue was in an over salt state, that all single malts tasted ridiculously sweet and almost syrupy. So it is possible this is what happened when you tried it, and you could have had the same experience with almost any other SM. Have you gone back and tried it again after a period of fasting for example? Fasting can really bring your taste buds online. I've broke many an intermittent fast with a tasting of scotch and oftentimes my smell and taste acuity is much improved.
