Bunny harvests her autumn leaves to make her favourite garden recipe - Leafmould.
She also shows us her embryonic Rose Meadow, a bold transformation which may look pretty bare now but should be flourishing by next summer.
And Bunny tackles the rather unsavoury subject of how to control rodents.

If you run your mower over the leaves without the box the first time they are pre-shredded and way more fit in the catch box . Sometimes I just blow the shredded leaves straight onto my beds for a beautiful weed free mulch which breaks down and darkens over winter.

This is exactly what i’ve spent doing much of this weekend - shredding / mulching the leaves with the mower, bagging them up and dumping them onto the tops of the five vegetable beds and walkways.

saving leaves worked out quite well last year, so this year i stacked all the unused blocks into a large bin just for leaves! looks like just another raised bed but with a gate at one end for easy access. looked out yesterday to see friend dumping 3 giant bags of leaves into it. i paid her for all the work of raking and gathering, with a cast iron trivet that i was gonna give her anyway!!! both of us felt like we got the best end of the deal!!!

I really enjoy the chores of autumn! The weather is crisp and the mosquitoes are very few. Thanks for the inspiration Bunny! I've got leaves to collect and shrubs and bulbs to plant!

Leaves make a wonderful mulch and help me raise beds above the dreadful clay and rock of our native dirt. I also add compost from a local yard where my tree service takes its debris to be turned into that compost. Cannot wait to see your rose meadow.

Hi Bunny! I learn such a lot from your videos. I have several leaf towers around my garden at various states of decomp but after watching the first couple of minutes I have a few things that I need to change up. Thank you so much and I love your Ryobi inspired fashion color choices.

That's great you have planted woodland grasses - important as foodplants for the larvae of some of our native brown butterflies.

Thank you Bunny for giving one of the best explanations of leaf mulch as I’ve always wondered how best to use it. You’ve filled in all the gaps. Also I love Erythronium’s. I think they are so beautiful with other spring bulbs.

Looking forward to seeing your rose meadow as it grows in. New plantings are great to see develop. Mouse issue. We (US z7. NY suburbs) have mice issues in the house in the fall/winter often. A few times we used poison, but then mice die in the walls sometimes where you end up having to cut a hole in the wall to try to find a stinky mouse body...very unpleasant! Recently We've found the battery powered traps to be very effective and humane (we get at the big box garden centers, or online). Traditional snap traps have always had some victims caught by a leg, etc that then must be dispatched, which is also very unpleasant. With the electric/battery traps I've never found anything alive in them and wondered if it was quick until we put out a trap and went back a minute later to check if it was on and found both that it was on and in the minute it had been set it had caught a mouse that was quite dead. They have two metal trays on the way to the bait (peanut butter works), and when the mouse's feet make the connection between the front and rear tray, the current kills them. They have a little flashing light indicator that tells you when there is something caught, and a door that you open to access the mouse. All you need do is turn the thing over to get the mouse out and maybe give it a wipe with a paper towel if there are any droppings. The current is obviously strong enough to quickly dispatch the mice, but does no damage to them after that so it's very clean and easy. These are the best traps I've used as far as effectiveness and ease. Maybe worth looking into if want to see if it works for you. Cheers, ahem... Enjoy the rose meadow. EJ

I’ve had great success with two outdoor cats - we feed them a bit and yet they still hunt the rats, field mice, snakes and moles/voles.

We live in the country with cattle ranches and chicken farms - with that comes mass amounts of rodents. Everyone has bait boxes and they work splendidly!

When we moved into our house, you could see mice running through the grass at night. Since then we have ended up with 6 cats. We never have a problem, even when the neighbors are complaining. We have acres around our house and barns. Even in the horse barn I have grain and I never find droppings. We are a very different climate than the UK, so that could factor in. Just an observation for people struggling.

Love your garden and greenhouse, always been partial to wood frame over metal, just think they age well. I keep a big pile of rotting leaves beside my compost bins and use it when cleaning up the garden waste as crops are being harvested, for me this is the time when brown material is hard to come, plus a little ash from the fire pit. Rodents....ya they are so destructive, for me it's voles, never know what to expect from my carrots and potatoes till harvest.

I love this one. Going to put these tips into practice immediately. Still lots of leaves here where I live in Maryland USA zone 7a. Follow you consistently. I'm DESPERATE because I can't find your video that has a shortish clip in it showing you using a clever tool to "dig" holes in your lawn to scatter daffodil bulbs. It's cold out, your dog/s are with you and there is reference about not letting dogs eat the bulbs. I'd be so grateful for your guidance on where to find it!!!

Some owls (eg our barn owls in Africa) control their breeding according to the amount of prey around and lay eggs over a longish period so there are mixed age owlets in the nest. Encourage owls and hope that your neighbours aren't using rodenticides!

Ultrasonic devices seem to work, in my experience, in apartments. The devices seem to simply push the mice to other people's apartments because the mice don't like the sound, but if you are the only food source, the mice will come regardless of the device's sound, so put your food in heavy plastic or metal containers mice can't get into. The old snap traps are the best bet. Those kill the mice almost instantly and in the least painful manner. It's no fun to control mice populations, but it's necessary when they get indoors. Friends of mine have cats to control mice problems in barns and garages, but I am allergic to cats, so I go for the old tried and true mouse snap traps.

Hi Bunny! One question I have from the rose section of the video is...have you ever done a rose based design for a horse track or a vineyard. Using myself as a sample size of 1, the roses are the first thing I notice at both of these locations. Apologies for both the comments in a row but I heard you had a two for one sale! ;-)

Very funny, We had a chuckle about this. Dave is a skilled stonewaller and builder, but now works for me a day a week in the garden. So any job that requires building skills is his. But for the path, I did the donkey work, the initial digging out, and barrowing in the setts and slabs. Laying of the Breedon gravel we split it evenly and we do that with most of the horticultural jobs. I’m no wimp - I promise you AND I load my barrow fuller than Dave’s!🐇.

Hi Bunny, the advice from the Butterfly Conservation society is not to mow you leaves, due to butterfly pupea that have evolved to hid amoungest the leaves of autumn. Thought you should know.

It’s a great soil conditioner helps improve the soil microorganism content. It’s important to remove all dead box leaves though, good hygiene really helps with box blight.🐇

If there's a house infestation, then it's a serious matter because of the dangerous pathogens that rodents can spread, but as for rats & mice outside coming in seasonally ~ especially Field-mice into outbuildings ~ it's my philosophy to 'let them be'. I know it's not a philosophy with a great following, but they are just following nature and, essentially it's our responsibility to devise ingenious ways of designing/adapting our outbuildings/greenhouses to be as rodent proof as possible. Frequently, killing these creatures is the cheapest way around the problem and, to my mind, that's just wrong 🐁
