I love this episode. This is quintessential Trek TOS. Beam down to a planet, some weird conflict has to be resolved and because they threaten the ship, kirk violates the Prime Directive and not only saves his ship but corrects a broken world. It is an excellent plot and well acted and there are bits of drama as well as humor and irony.

As Shatner said about Star Trek. Prime Directive: never interfere. What do they do every episode. Beam down to a planet & interfere!
@ariochiv
@ariochiv 7 ай бұрын
In the original series, the Prime Directive didn't apply to everyone. The Federation has been at war with the Klingons and Romulans... obviously war is "interfering" with another culture, so obviously that rule does not apply. In later series the Prime Directive was expanded to a sort ridiculous degree, to even cover offering aid. The Federation was attempting to establish diplomatic relations with Eminiar 7, and Kirk was under direct orders to do so even though it might involve hostile action, so clearly the Prime Directive doesn't factor into it.
@tbutler4103
@tbutler4103 7 ай бұрын
@@solvingpolitics3172 I remember reading many years ago that the rule of thumb (at least with TOS) was that anytime they bring up the Prime Directive, they are about to disregard the Prime Directive. That's certainly true in a lot of cases!
@jimdetry9420
@jimdetry9420 7 ай бұрын
Doesn't the Prime Directive only apply to planets less andvanced than the Federation? Othereise how can there be commerce, trade, negotiations, or common laws between "civilized" planets? All of those are, in some way, intereference with someone.
@ariochiv
@ariochiv 7 ай бұрын
@@jimdetry9420 The various series and properties are extremely inconsistent about how and when the Prime Directive applies. Sometimes it applies specifically to civilizations that have not yet attained starflight, but other times it is cited as applying to even the Klingon and Romulans; if I recall, Picard cites the Prime Directive as limiting his involvement in the Klingon civil war. It's a bit of a mess.

Great reaction as always, Captain Bunny. The key to understanding Kirk's actions in this episode is that in the end, he didn't destroy the agreement between the two planets because he wanted to interfere or because he thought his solution was "better." He did it to save his ship and crew. If the Eminians hadn't tried to capture and kill everyone aboard the Enterprise he would have left them to continue their simulated war. This theme of prioritizing personal loyalty over rules is central to every main character in the show, IMO. Another example is Spock in The Managerie.

I love, love, love this episode, with Kirk and Scotty both being bad-a$$es, and Spock taking charge, blowing things up. I enjoy how Kirk's speech brought peace to the Eminiar/Venicar war situation. He really had no choice but to act, as Anon 7 had him and his people set to die in a war not of their making. In a season 2 episode, Kirk will change the situation in a similar manner, with a great speech. I love Spock's "There's a multi-legged creature on your shoulder!", and Scotty's "The screens stay up!!", and, "Aye, the haggis is in the fire, for sure!" reply to Bones. The Eminians could have easily let the Enterprise go, but as soon as they took the landing party hostage and opened fire on the Enterprise they engaged in hostile acts against Federation personnel and property. YES! I'm so glad you finally got to watch this episode! It's truly one of the all time greats, imho. Scotty is brilliant (don't ever put his baby in danger!), Kirk is on point "Peace, or utter destruction...it's up to you." And I love how you always comment on the clothing style and set lighting and stuff, It's really great! Gotta have a little sympathy for the ambassador, he's just following Starfleet orders himself, but not having command, he just doesn't realize the type of stuff that can happen...(think about Admiral Kirk in Star Trek II, he got so sloppy being off the bridge after promotion, he didn't raise the shields when Savvik advised him...if Scotty had been up there and not down in engineering with the trainees, he would have srsly had the last word on that...but I digress). Anyhow, Starfleet high command is pretty naive or ignorant of many things, quite often(even in The Next Generation). As for all the stuff about interfering with someone elses way of doing things, and forcing them to make a decision to change.... I'd rather not get into an argument pointing out the parallels with our world's current geo/social/political issues regarding who's the aggressor and who is trying to preserve a way of being. It's a rather touchy subject...and my views and opinions are currently very unpopular. 🤐 Can't wait to see more reactions, Bun-bun! One of my favorites. The story comes from a series of novels written during the cold war that worried a "push button" war might evolve as technology improved. Missiles and bombs were being developed that allowed you to kill and never see the results - people were worried that this made war too easy. Interestingly, the opposite happened during the Viet Nam War where everyone could see the horror of war on the evening news. So video tech. had the opposite effect causing protests etc. and an early ending of the conflict. This is probably my favorite Scotty episode, It doesn't make him one of the "big three" but it does establish him as 3.5 in the pecking order of central characters. Get ready for even better speeches from Kirk. He is always Rodenberry's mouthpiece. We are coming up on some of the best Star Trek - tears will follow. Please consider the idea that not all cultures are "equal". The problem is - how to determine better or worse. The Rodenberry solutiion is to balance logic and compassion(Spock/McCoy) under the guidance of unwavering optimism and confidence(Kirk). Rodenberry makes the argument that progress is always possible given this mixture of virtues.

Another fantastic reaction, Bunny! Your Star Trek reactions have rapidly become one of my favorite things to watch! And there is SO much more Star Trek for you to enjoy!!! Not just this series, but future series, and tons of movies! I'll be on this journey with you as long as you want to keep it going!! :) This is also a total classic Star Trek TOS episode! Perhaps a little under-rated even! But this is one of my favorites!

Great episode, great reaction! Scotty is spot on here. Reminds us again why we want someone like him on our team. Wars fought with computers. A concept still well ahead of its time. The horrors of war. Anyone can act tough when the threat and sight of real blood and guts is removed. This episode was possibly an inspiration to the movie War Games, which I recommend.

A great reaction to a great episode! The writing and dialogue was excellent in this episode. Shatner as Kirk was acting his heart out, especially his speeches at the end. There was a real sense of allegory when this episode originally aired. The Country was mired in the Viet Nam War, at the time, casualties were reported daily and still the war would not end. I was moved by your comments at the end Bunny, about the unifying effect of Star Trek to the diverse members of the audience. Thank you... P.S. - Best line: "Sir, there is a multi legged creature on your shoulder."

This is one of my favorite episodes, I watched it in syndication when I was really young and it stuck with me. For me this is a parable where people are so removed from the horrors of war that war has become .... easy. The super rich, the war machine corporations, the mighty over the weak... we go day to day over decades waging war, but when we are so far removed, that no one cares about the lives lost. You see people cry over a building or some displaced dogs, but we forget the lives and their work is now only history, if they are remembered at all. When I think of drones being used around the world and their constant proliferation, I think back on this episode. Drones piloted by people, or soon set to AI. They are given a target, lives are taken forever, and there is little thought behind the action. Little effort is taken, if I should or who may get hurt around that target, or if it is even the right ones. And it is just so damn easy. Gene Rodenberry was a military man, and war often was a theme in his mind and his stories. This episode is relevant now and probably far into the future after we are long gone.

What's remarkable about Star Trek, and a few other old shows like Twilight Zone, is ideas that have been used to the point of being tropes and memes started with these shows. They were new at the time, coming from a lot of very good writers that were very versed in literature and classic science fiction. Richard Matheson wrote I am Legend and What Dreams May Come, which became movies later, and he also wrote more episodes of the old Twilight Zone than any other writer. Star Trek and Twilight Zone both easily fit into the classic science fiction genre, with a lot of ideas that have trickled into pop culture as a whole. The 'morality of war' theme covered here has been explored in a lot of different ways in a lot of different places, but this version of it seems a bit more straightforward and direct than others. It definitely is a high concept, 'make you think' episode, cowritten by Gene L. Coon, who along with Matheson and DC Fontana contributed to some of the best episodes of Star Trek.

Hi Bunny - there's something to keep in mind, too. When you see one of these episodes and it reminds you of something else you've seen.. it's because a great deal of media after TOS was inspired by the writing on this show. And what i always find interesting, is that when TNG came out, people thought Picard was this great intellectual who solved problems with words... thanks to the writers putting him in those types of situations... but they forgot that most of Kirk's greatest victotries were verbal, not with fists or phasers. And they both love Shakespeare :)

An excellent episode. Actually, Kirk's brilliant solution to ending a horrific war has something of an historical precedent. In 1914, amidst the devastation of World War I, the two enemies who the day before were trying to kill each other, suddenly stopped, walked across no-man's-land, shook hands and were friendly together. The 1914 Christmas Truce was a remarkable thing. Unfortunately, the men who did not do the fighting or the dying - the politicians and generals - demanded that they go back to obliterating each other.

I love this one. "We're not going to kill *today*" This is a key recurring theme in Star Trek - that in the future humans are NOT magically better, but that we as a society have chosen to be better. I also love the moral dilemma here, leaving the war but extracting the pain so there's no reason to stop. Horrifying.

This was a very good episode. I need to first say, that I'm a "strong" believer in both Self-Defense, and even more so in the defense of the innocent. What was 'intentionally' left out ( I think to keep it more civil), is what happens to the children, babies, and other innocents that were declares as casualties. We need to protect those that cannot protect themselves (a U.S. Marine goal and objective). Murdering innocents is NEVER acceptable, no matter how painless it 'might' be (which we will NEVER know for sure).

Wow. You're positively GLOWING today. Yes, this was a fantastic episode. Yes, we get to see Scotty flex his command muscles here. We see Barbara Babcock in 6 episodes in the Original ST. This lovely, beautiful woman is 86 today. Note the confidence that Spock in that lieutenant in the red tunic, having her stay in that room and prevent Mea from killing herself even though she was a lot bigger. Yes, that ambassador was very much overzealous about completing his mission, but the irony was, as you said, he got to play his ambassador role after all at the end.

This episode was a critique of the draft/conscription during the Vietnam War - men of that era were expected to report for service, be shipped overseas, and die. The Original Series was quite nuanced when it comes to politics - a second season episode essentially defends the Vietnam War!

The key to Kirk's solution was that they Amenians claimed throughout that they didn't want war. Notice that Anon 7 said to Kirk, "What are the hundreds of lives aboard you ship compared to the hundreds of millions of lives on Ameniar AND VENTICAR." Notice how he was concerned about his enemies' lives. I get chocked up at Kirk's words too.

Greetings from Scotland. This is one of the best episodes. Perhaps it reflects the circumstances of when the episode was recorded i.e. Vietnam. And of course Scotty was a real life war hero. Star Trek can be silly at times profound at others. The episode has a lot to say brilliantly about a serious subject. Finally, Kirk's speeches are still relevant and have resonance 50 years later. Respect.

Whenever I see a new Star Trek reaction video from bunnytails pop up on my youtube feed it is like Christmas morning and discovering a gift under the tree! I grew up with the original series and have felt so fortunate to have such a rich fantasy-world to live in for all of these decades of my life. Sadly, though, it as been mostly a solitary pleasure as none of my friends are fans nor know of my interest in the Star Trek universe. So being able to “share” these original series episodes with someone who is seeing them for the first time AND who appreciates the drama and humor so intelligently is wonderful. You are absolutely correct in stating that Star Trek is for everyone, regardless of who they are or where they are in this life-voyage. Thank you for sharing your Star Trek journey so far, and for those of us who have been on this ship all-along, welcome aboard!

Don't skip the animated series either. It came out in between the time the original show went off the air and the first movie was made. It also returned most of the cast redoing their roles. There were 16 episodes in the first season and 6 episodes in the second season. I believe they were only a half an hour long. They might not be interesting enough for your channel (with a few exceptions) but there are definitely several of them you'll want to check out at least on your own.

“we’ve impeded on their war, we’ve destroyed their equipment, we’ve kind of invited them to be at war with us as well" As you've also pointed out, Kirk didn't go there by choice. And when he did arrive, he was told that the entire crew of the Enterprise would be killed. So, destroying their equipment didn't just save the people down there who were condemned to die, it also ensured that nothing would happen to the crew.
