A longer, more chatty video about sub-regions of Burgundy, as a background to explaining the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits region, and why I think it's worth seeking out the wines from here.
I try to explain why I prefer the wines of the Cote de Nuits, Burgundy's northernmost region, over other parts of Burgundy.
Ends with a tasting of Philippe Gavignet's Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Clos des Dames Huguettes 2019.

I haven't tried any yet of my order from Fingal-rock. Hoping to this weekend. I have two bottles of that wine. Looking forward to it.

I hope you enjoy it Alan! I think those wines are best served a bit below room temperature so if it ends up being a hot day you might even want to pop it in the fridge for a short while (half an hour?) before opening.

Love your videos, it feels somehow relaxing watching a well dressed Gentleman enjoying a good bottle of wine in the woods. But I am not that convinced about Cote de Nuits making more feminine wine. What about Volnay? Those are more feminine then most Cote de Nuits Pinots.

Thanks Ralf, I think you make a very good point there and I'm sure I have been a bit narrowly focused in my exploration of Burgundy! Perhaps this is part of the reason people in the wine industry object to those masculine/feminine terms - because they are a bit subjective? I can imagine my idea of "feminine" is not the same as other people's. Anyway, it sounds like I should really explore Volnay!

Very interesting. I know you like the English sparkling wines too. Do you have any opinions on Italian or Spanish, or even German wine. I am learning a lot from your videos.

Thanks Frank! I have very blinkered vision when it comes to wine! I tend to find a style I like and focus on that pretty much exclusively. So I hardly ever drink anything but English Sparkling and Burgundy these days! From my very brief dabblings with those countries you mention: - Germany. I do quite like Spatburgunder (the German name for Pinot Noir) and I think there can be something interesting and understated in those kind of slightly austere cooler climate Pinots. - Italy. I can't stand Prosecco! ...but for sparkling wine, Franciacorta is a lot more interesting - traditional method like Champagne and English Sparkling, not Charmat method like Prosecco. The only other thing I occasionally drink from Italy is Gavi, because it's a classic pairing with pasta dishes involving pesto. I like the crisp minerality of it, but it's something I'd only really have with food. - Spain. I know practically nothing of the wines of Spain! However I do think Cava is perhaps unfairly underrated. Like Franciacorta (and unlike Prosecco) it's traditional method, and although the bargain basement versions of it you get in supermarkets are generally pretty nasty, spend a bit more (but still less than Champagne) and I think there's some very respectable fizz: I have enjoyed Juvé & Camps for example.

@@BurgundyWithTweedy Thank you very much for your reply. That is all very useful information to a wine novice like myself. I like the way you talk about wine because it is pitched at the right level for me.
