In Yoruba - Abobaku is the term used to describe "The one who dies with the King."
So when the Ooni of Ife - or the king of the Yoruba people - dies, the Abobaku must be buried with him. The Abobaku is appointed at the king's coronation and takes care of him while he's alive. But, once he dies, must serve and attend him in the afterlife.
"They would have to drag me back by force!" says one man.
"He is greedy for accepting that position - so he should follow Oba!" says another guy.
Nigeria's Nobel Prize Laureate - Wole Soyinka - wrote his play: "Death and the King's Horsemen" about the act.
Ife is known as "the Source" in Yorubaland and the Ooni is not only the king but spiritual leader of the Yoruba people.
However, with the recent death of the late Ooni of Ife - there are reports that the burial ceremony had to be postponed after the Abobaku fled.
"You cannot see your death and stand there!" says one guy.
Would you run?

I hope you know that no Abobaku ran away. This whole thing started as a joke. Burying someone with the dead Oba is an old Oyo empire practice not Ile ife. Even in Oyo, in this present day no such thing occurs again. Verify your stories ***** dont spread false information especially to people who are not informed. It has already been abolished a long time ago. I know the news sounds juicy, but at least have some credibility.

Fatimah Jibril Thank you for shedding some light into this story. My dad once told me his grandfather was a king and so many servants were buried alive with him when he died. I must admit coming across this store brought back the fear I felt the first time I hear about it. I am a Yoruba woman but some traditions of burying someone alive is wicked and inhumane. I pray that if such tradition exist it must be abolished. Forget traditions its dated or twins will still be killed today- that was once a tradition!

Fatimah Jibril The truth of the matter is there was never a time that anyone was burried with any Oba... This was part of the Religious Propaganda campaign they used to neutralize the Oyo Empire back in the day. There is nothing such as ABobaku. It is just normal word like Abokoku. Abobaku is a word and an expression you can use for so many things proverbially. It is not a title.Examples: E mi o le se “Abobaku Obirin” meaning I will not die because of a woman. Mi o le se “Abobaku Oga” that is I will not die for the boss. Most of us are carried away by western culture…including their religion, fashion, music, language just to mention a few.

If a man knew the full meaning of what he was about or what he was signing such as being buried along side a king or whatever, and recieving award for that. my suggestion is pls look for him where ever he is hiding and bury him with the king. But i believe that it is very nasty for us to continue hearing more about evil traditions. In Yeruba land they are called Taye and Kehinde, so why not continue killing twins just as it was several years ago?

+Koroma Hassan Yoruba people never killed twins. Twins played an important role in Yoruba tradition. In the Yoruba religion, there are even twin Orishas who act as special guardians to twins.
