I ran into Siskel and Ebert at The Mirage in Las Vegas. I told Mr Ebert, "Thank you for Gates Of Heaven". He excitedly screamed, while pointing at me, "Gates Of Heaven". He then talked of how much they pushed the film . ..... To let him know that his recommendation brought me joy, remains one of the best moments of my life.

"Fingers" was adapted by the great Jacques Audiard in 2004 as "The Beat That My Heart Skipped". A great film.

I remember watching "The Onion Field", "Bye Bye Brazil", "The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith" and "Gates of Heaven" because of this episode. Gotta get to that Herzog movie!

John Fitzpatrick I saw Strozek on the Shout Factory website a few months ago. Really good movie.

@@patrickshields5251 I saw Strozek at Ebertfest several years ago. There was a Q & A session with Werner Herzog afterwards. When it comes to Werner Herzog, there's never a dull moment.

@@johnfitzpatrick3094 I also saw Aguirre The Wrath of God. Now I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of his films.

@@patrickshields5251 I've seen Aguirre, but it's been a long time. I have a feeling that Francis Coppola saw that film before he made Apocalypse Now.

@@johnfitzpatrick3094 Do you remember their 1979 episode devoted to Monster Movies? (This is not to be confused with their infamous "Women in Danger" special). It was a special about how monster movies started and where they are headed after the 70s is coming to a close.

1:03 That line is so beautifully poignant and captures the drive behind Errol Morris' documentary. It's not about pet cemeteries, it's about the meaning of life

i dont know, i guess im one of those people they are making fun of. because i watched gates of heaven decades ago and all i remember is it was one of the most heartbreaking depressing things iev ever seen. and i like stark and depressing films, i like realistic not happy endings. but this doc depressed me in all the wrong ways, i remember being miserable after sitting through it. but i flet the same way years ago when i watched "grey gardens" another doc people seem to go crazy for. they were both just heartbreaking and made me miserable and feel life was utterly pointless.

Gene gave the wrong year for Onion Field. Couldn't they get those years straight?
