Most of Burma Mines Railway Part 2 consists of shots of Kerr Stewart 0-4-2T winding its way along the pleasant river valley towards Wallet Gorge. Along the way we encountered a thunderstorm that fortunately soon passed. This part finishes with an O&K diesel Hydraulic 0-6-0 hauling some wagons up the Wallah Gorge spiral followed by the Kerr Stuart effortlessly attacking the gradient, a contrast to the sick Bagnall seen in part 4.

I love trains. I grew up watching them in my front yard. It is nice to see that some of these old trains are still around and working like normal

I used to work cutting turf at a bog near Kirkbride, Cumbria, U.K. There were simplex two cylinder diesel engines drawing the bogies and sand boxes which the driver could reach to throw sand on the narrow gauge tracks.

Yes excellent photography, - well done as usual. I hope no-one drinks the water from the stream, - it looks awfully polluted to me. Was that the idea of the 'tank' wagon - (i.e. fresh drinkable water), - if so how do they manage nowadays with the line closed, although from your comments I presume it is still 'in situ'.

3:25 Gloves now issued to all left handed steam locomotion traction engineers. 7:43 Guy in the red shirt regularly makes employee of the month for his consistent accuracy in applying the traction enabling compound. 10:39, however, this guy (green hat & jacket) has been reprimanded several times for his wasteful traction enabling compound application. 14:11 Local TrainSpotter now happy after spotting the D.C. 303 and logging it.

That IS THE NARROWEST guage I've ever seen. Any narrower and it would be a monorail. AND the "automatic sander" -- pretty clever use of manpower.

Welsh Highland Rly is even narrower than Burma Mines Rly. BMR uses 2 ft gauge and WHR uses 1' 11 1/2" gauge.

Why the sand poured on the rail? Terrain is not steep... To get traction? Then why it is not there now? Pls somebody reply....
@blackthorne57
@blackthorne57 5 жыл бұрын
Most of the line is not steep but wet rails make traction difficult so sand is required. labour is cheap and mechanical sanders get blocked in the damp atmosphere.

I assume the loco has no sand dome? Or the sanders have long since quit working.
@blackthorne57
@blackthorne57 5 жыл бұрын
Looking at my still photos, I can't see sanding gear on the loco (it may have been removed in the past). labour is cheap so it is not a big problem to use hand sanding. Hand sanding is/was quite common on NG industrial railways round the world. Humid conditions can also clog up mechanical sanders.

Why do they pour sand as they go through the tracks?
@blackthorne57
@blackthorne57 5 жыл бұрын
Sand is placed on the rails to give the wheels more grip on the damp rails. This will help prevent 'wheel-slip'.

@blackthorne57
@blackthorne57 6 жыл бұрын
เป็นทรายธรรมดาที่ใช้ในการช่วยจับล้อจับราง มีที่จอดรถไม่ได้มีการทำงานทรายรางน้ำเพื่อที่จะเทลงบนรางด้วยมือt It is just ordinary sand used to help the wheels grip the rails. There locos do not have a working sand-chute so it is poured on the rails by hand.
