You would be surprised how easy they are to operate. Chris could show you in 1/2 hour how to operate the excavator for sure. Now there are going to be people that say that you’re not efficient at it you’re not fast you’re not good and all that other crap but at least you know what the controls do and don’t be intimidated by the size of the machine, the controls are similar on all of them. To get as good as Chris you need lots of experience.

One of the things about machines like that whether it be an excavator or a skid steer, if you let go of the controls everything stops. It’s not like a car where it keeps on rolling you have to want it to do something and if you take hands off it stops.

Haha. When I hire an expert, I trust the expert to do their job. The contractors I have hired are happy to come back for other work, especially when I was still Ranching! For what it's worth, you can attach an old 110 volt oil furnace squirrel fan to a 14 inch X 14 foot galvanized pipe and turn your standard fire into a blast furnace. Works great for burning stumps and large fire piles in a hurry. Best to turn the fan off when getting near the fire with equipment as it will melt your hydraulic lines. On the down side, all the dirt under the fire pit will be sterile and not grow anything.

Where I live, they would still run it through a chipper. The laws on burn piles are rather restrictive, so contractors have gotten inventive. I haven't seen a company take down a tree like you do anywhere near where I live. Everything that might be usable is cut down, sorted and meticulously stacked before being sent out. There's plenty of "we sell firewood, you figure how to move it". There's a variety of uses other then for mulch. For exemple, my town used a large amount of mulch on a muddy walking trail in a parc. It did wonders and didn't cost anything other then transport. It's a great solution that has almost no environmental impact. Contractors will also use it for similar reasons to deal with muddy soil. Crushed more finely, it can be added to compost piles. Some companies clean the mulch, compress it and make compressed fire logs. We've also got a cogeneration facility north of where I live that will burn just about any wood waste. When they can't do that, they just chip it up on site and mix it with the dirt. I get where you are coming from, and there's no question that if everyone else is doing it, you probably have little choice but to go along if you want to keep your prices reasonable. It also helps tremendously to have an entire industrial core that is capable of handling that product.

Chris, I respect the fact that you are in this business, and you know what makes economic sense. I do appreciate you educating those of us who don't know the business, and don't know why you don't chip. Thanks. I have a chipper that mounts on my tractor, and people say "... but I gave you that whole pile of limbs." they don't realize that that pile of limbs ends up as three wheel barrel loads of chips. I chip when it makes sense, definitely not to make money. Between my time, the fuel and the machine, it always loses money.
