Burning Bush, also called Winged Euonymus (Euonymus alatus), is a very common shrub used in home and commercial landscaping. While it is very pretty in the fall, it is a serious threat to our native landscapes because of its tendency to spread seeds and out-compete native plants in our natural areas. We discuss how to recognize it, what impact it has on natural areas, how to get rid of it, and even some suggestions for alternatives to give you the same bold red color using native plants. Other species discussed include Wintercreeper (Euonymus fortunei), Wahoo (Euonymus atropurpureus), Japanese Honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica), Multiflora Rose (Rosa multiflora), Amur Honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii), Callery Pear (Pyrus calleryana), and Autumn Olive (Elaeagnus umbellata).
