Im a welder and i think I've seen a smaller similar reaction several seconds after I've done some welding. Sometimes, after I've welded a bead on a regular structural steel like s355, i see these bright streaks on the surface of the steel, running next to the bead, glowing red and maybe sparkling a bit too. It looks exactly like the few seconds in the end of your reaction. Sometimes i have ignited it on accident by smacking next to the bead with a slag hammer or even by sweeping with a steel brush next to it. I've seen the reaction last up to 2-3 seconds and the biggest surprise for me was that i have been able to start the reaction with a small strike of a hammer even 20-30 seconds after i've stopped welding so that the spot was cooled down enough to touch it briefly with my bare hands. And it ignites even though im tapping 5 cm away from the point it ignites. I have seen this happen dozens of times and it has bothered me years, since it is so bizarre. I mean Its just a piece of steel pipe and somehow i see burning streaks running next to the welded area, ignited by a small tap from a hammer, way after the bead has cooled down. It looks like parts of the iron has ignited spontaneously without heat. Sometimes its just a few burning streaks, sometimes it's a 1cm wide burning wavefront. I dont know what kind of reaction it is, but after iv'e seen this video i see it has a striking similarity. I think steel has some sulfur in it and a lot of iron ofc but i dont know if the reaction i have seen comes from that or is there something else burning. Anyways thanks for the interesting video!

It could be in the welding material.

I believe this process would potentially be common around volcanic environments due to the higher levels of sulfur compounds and the presence of iron and high heat within lava. I guess that may be why I instantly thought of a volcano when I saw how the two elements reacted with each other.

Interestingly enough I was talking about this reaction all last week while I was in Yellowstone, and yesterday I asked a friend if they ended up doing it in chem because of covid. This reaction actually goes on in the hydrothermal and geothermal vents. It is actually really cool. You can even see pure sulfur around some of them, and the rotten egg smell is the hydrogen sulfide gas being bubbled through the water, creating sulfuric acid too (the pH of most of the vents in Yellowstone is 1 and the temperature is 170°F).

I remember getting to melt iron and sulfur in chem labs in 9th grade and it's still one of my favourite things I've ever done in a lab. I didn't expect it to become completely red hot and we later got to break the test tubes to get the compound out to do experiments with. To make it even better, we were the only lab batch that got to do this coz the school got a little upset about the cost of so many test tubes breaking.
