Muddy roads that left tens of thousands of partygoers stranded for days at a festival had dried up enough this afternoon to allow for a mass exodus from the Nevada desert. A late-summer storm turned the annual Burning Man festival into a mud pit over the weekend, after more than half an inch of rain drenched the grounds. The event traditionally culminates in the torching of a large wooden man and temple structure during the final two nights, but the fires were postponed as authorities worked to reopen exit routes by the end of the Labour Day weekend.

The only thing worst than a crowd is a crowd with nowhere to go... I heard one person died, unsure how but when you think about 100k people and just one death, more people die drinking and doing other stuff on the strip each night so props to the people for generally keeping order, im actually kinda impressed, ive seen parties with just 30 people go off the rails lol

Yup, not fun. I have had to deal with working conditions where a build up of sticky clay on your work boots adds several pounds to each of your feet and height/unevenness to your soles, and still be very slippery, and there's nothing you can do about it. It really sucks.

Burning Man's idea was stolen right down to the burning effigy and outdoor camping and circus tent from the legendary Bread and Puppet Domestic Resurrection Theatre that occurred every summer at the farm in north central Vermont where the Schumann family who ran the country's oldest political theatre company. Tens of thousands of people came, camped and cared for each other and took a lot of perception enhancing substances. The actor Paul Zaloom (Famous for hosting smartie pants kids show "Beakman's World" in the 90s) was the ring leader and head of the troupe the years just before they stopped doing it because someone was killed on the property because some idiot brought a gun and decided to get drunk and shoot somebody for who knows what. THey burned a huge figure in effigy at the end of the three days of performance and we wandered through the vermont countryside tripping on whatever and loving the world and we were Vermonters so mud was like in our blood and everybody took care of each other which was the whole point of the political theatre of Domestic Resurrection. Ironically the Phish guys (some friends of mine in the band) had their eyes opened to this counterculture there and took it to heart and eventually someone borrowed it to do burning man (well, a guy named Larry in SF did, who died a couple years ago, a marketing guy who figured out the smart hippies were going to Phish shows and would go to something like this too). I think it will survive because it is after all a business entity and not a family farm liable for whatever takes place there with hundreds of thousands of freaks pushing their individual limits.

All roads are still closed! We are partying on and helping each other out, we are giving people coffee and muffins, helping people dry out their stuff and pack up... they are burning the man tonite at nine (usually Saturday) and the temple at midnight (usually Sunday eve). It would be great if a news person was actually here to report on how amazing everyone is working together to be sure all are taken care of. It's really beautiful!
