In this diy video, we are milling timbers and working on the post and beams for the new timber frame barn, wood shop and sawmill. We are using old school hand tools as well to fashion the woodwork like the early pioneers did. We are also preparing to harvest the hog and smoke the meat in the new smokehouse. Follow along in the series as we build in stages.

real nice work. my grandfather used the old precivil war kitchen for his smoke house it was not air tight he took out one window nailed tin over hole and ran pipe from and old wood stove thru it smoke vented thru eaves and the old fireplace. it's gone now was last used to store hay. termites and wind took it out and i burn it for fire wood and used the good lumber for other things. take care, be safe and well.

I have noticed you are preserving your lumber and post beams 😀 are you allowing time for the wood to dry out , are you decreasing the life of your structures by sealing up wood that is not dry ? I have no experience in charcoal preserving but sometimes you can see dryrott in buildings that been constructed with raw wood ?
@SmokyMountainOutpost
@SmokyMountainOutpost Жыл бұрын
Years ago people built with green wood. The ends are still open and allow the wood to dry. It would probably be better to seal the ends as opposed to what I’m doing. My last house I built the bulk of material except The inside and outside walls were framed with factory lumber. The rest of the house the logs and laid for about a year. No troubles or worries with that house that was built in the 90s. This house is protected with extermination so hopefullyIt will last a long time

Really enjoy watching your posts. Don't mind a once-a-week uploading when each one is longer. REALLY love your smoke house set-up with the fire downhill from the actual structure. VERY WISE. Also want to commend you on treating your tools with respect and appreciation. It's concerning to see how many leave their sawmills and vehicles out in the weather to rust. See that too often with farmers also. Quick question: What software or app do you use to format and edit your content? Do you use multiple cameras, with wireless mic? Would truly appreciate your answers. You do this part well also. Thank you!

I’m preparing myself for extending a barn. I’m wondering how do you treat your wood? I’ve used diesel before but since it’s super expensive now you might have a better way.
@SmokyMountainOutpost
@SmokyMountainOutpost Жыл бұрын
Burning it will help to preserve it longer I’ve done all mine that way. I also use Cabot Australian timber frame oil. It goes a long long way. I’m on my fifth or sixth 5 gallon bucket. It’s not cheap it’s about $225 for 5 gallons. But it will go farther than what you would think. It is very very high-quality

Sure would like to see you wearing a dust mask, when you saw inside your sawmill. If you stop a minute and watch a rerun of your Video, there is still a lot of dusting of the tree inside the sawmill. Do you ever finish sawing logs and see that your clothing is covered in the sawdust, gets scary just to think of how much of that sawdust is getting into your lungs and respiratory areas! I noticed that last week when you and your son in law were using the sawmill both of you were unprotected? Over time this will definitely not be good for any of you. I know that you have the doors open, and that helps to dispense some of the sawdust from anyone inside breathing it in. But without a vacuum system, you are always being over-exposed. We love your Show of Videos and want to see you here for a very long time. Yes I am a former safety official, so seeing you all exposed like this is very concerning!
