“Burnt Dreams”
Sit and watch the smoke.
Inspired by Alex Garland’s 2024 film, “Civil War,” and Olin Myhre’s 2024 short film, “Day at the MoMa,” “Burnt Dreams” combines Peter B. Hutton’s 2007 film, “At Sea,” and Suicide’s 1979 synth-punk single, “Dream Baby Dream,” to create a cinematic collage that conveys how contemporary mass communication causes political fragmentation. The central subject, an America consumed by homogenous digital noise and economic rot, is symbolically evoked through the nation's flag and a singular scene from “At Sea” repeated ad nauseam, in addition to deliberate pixelization and reverb. The American Dream is dead - and its echoes are being broadcasted live.
