The thing I find interesting about older model trains is that they weren't models, they were toys. This thing was probably worn out by a child who loved it to the moon and back, because it was indeed an affordable toy, not a complicated model. Super cool!

The Dock shunter was my first own purchase in about 1956. After being passed (and abused) through a further two generations of family it is now back with me - and currently running smoothly on my display.

I for one would love to see a Scrap Or Salvage 'special episode' where there's no time limit and the loco is proper minging! XD A full on 0 to 100 restoration. If it's too much to get sorted, the EVIL scrap-man can have it :P

Glad to see season 2 of Salvage and Scrap. Your channel prompted me to salvage my trainset from my parents' house and finally starting working on my layout, an old childhood dream that is finally coming true. Oh, I have one of these, painted all yellow. I always found it fascinating because it's such an old loco with a built-in light. Mine still works quite well, though it could probably do with some maintenance. If I had any handiwork skills I'd probably rig it up with a wire or something so I could make a battery wagon for it.

Even if it's too late, I would like to say that the jumping of the wheels may come from some junk stuffed in the pinnions/worm gear, locally filling the gap and forcing the pinion out of the worm gear, resulting in the vibrations. I think that both worm gears are filled, resulting in the pinion disengaging during one rotation of the worm gear and re-engageing in the precedent spot, because of the loco's weight and inertia, resulting in the wheels going back and forth by a few degrees without ever making a full rotation

@@SamsTrains I had exactly the same problem with an Arnold 'Schweinenause' in N Gauge. The problem in my case was a cracked pinion gear out of alignment with the worm drive. Replacement of the pinion with a nice new brass gear (cost me €2.95 with €13 postage from Germany) and now it runs like the clappers!

Hi Sam. Please accept my compliments about the quality of your current video productions, and in particular your full-face introductory commentary in this video where your focus and colour saturation and white balance is absolutely perfect. The container-wall "industrial" backdrop in this video is a welcome change as well (even though I fully appreciate that your normal upstairs loft view in your normal videos provides a consistency that many viewers feel comfortable with). Keep up the outstanding work and I wish you every success in the future.

Hi Sam. Did you clean the back face of the wheels, as that is where the pick up connects? Also, with this type of power bogie, you can add a jumper wire to improve the electrical pathway. I would check the gearing for crud to address the wobbly wheels. Love this aspect of the hobby. Just got 16 non runners in a job lot, all should be restorable with a few spares or just some TLC. £12 cost average plus £5 average for spares. Well worth the time investment in my opinion. Keep it up.

There is a brass bearing and a tiny ball bearing at each end of the armature. The bearing lubrication pads look new - it's easy to lose the ball-bearing when replacing them. The glimpses of a worm drive also suggest uneven wear. I have at least twelve of those bogie units - in various Tri-Ang locomotive model bodies. All they have needed to restore them to good condition is some TLC. The only age failures have been open circuit windings. Lacking a re-magnetiser - any weak magnets have been replaced with modern strong ones. Setting a 30 minute time limit is too arbitrary. Repairs take time and patience to diagnose and fix cleanly. Often a case or undoing a previous owner's bodge. It is most dispiriting to see potentially good models scrapped in this way.

Hurray! Salvage or scrap is back. However, you scrapped a Dock Authority! You cannot do that! I bought exactly the same loco for my 10th birthday from the local toy shop back in 1972. I still have it and it goes much better after me cleaning the axles between the wheels. Anorak time! Your one dates (or should I now say dated?) from about the same time since it has (had?) the smooth wheels. The ones from the 50s and 60s had wheels with grooves across their flanges. Also, why on earth did someone charge you £17? I would have expected this to be abpout £10, since it was in such rough condition and did not go. Anyway, I am glad the series is back. I just need counselling over the apparent demise of an old favourite. I am happy to give its remains a good burial / home though.

Bearings with a small press should be replaceable , though you might need to turn your own on a lathe Proper repair work needs longer than half an hour if faults are more complex. Alternatively the motor bogie yields more parts for other ones ( similar used in the Blue Pullman for example ). The body playing around with Black Beetle or similar motor drives and fitting DCC can make this normal manic rats run more controllably
