Burr Stewart takes us on a whirlwind tour of his very large HO scale layout of the Burrlington Northern, a proto-freelanced layout of Burlington Northern set in 1973.

Burr, I really enjoy your presentations and your perspectives. I know you’re not one of those HOers who’s afraid of N scale. Given the scope of your empire building, did you ever consider doing the main layout in N scale? That would have been WILD!

I agree, and if I was starting it today I might be doing it in N scale. When I was designing and building my layout, it was before DCC, and using straight DC for switching cars in N scale was just not fun. Nothing but hesitation and stalls. When the Atlas Kato drive units came out in HO scale (early '80's) , they were so smooth running that I just had to go back to HO scale for my main layout. But now I'm really enjoying my N scale layout with DCC sound almost as much as the HO layout. See: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m72jZrekxJ3beoU.html for a recent example. Actually, I've always thought that TT was the perfect scale, and now that it is starting to come back, if I were to live another 40 years I'd consider switching to that! :)
