This lady explains how her grandmother knitted these socks in the village of Burshi in Dagestan and then brought them with her to Azerbaijan when she got married. She explains that they made all their own yarn and dyed it themselves.
This lady is a part of the Rutul people, and in her language they call these knitted long socks "Qvalt". She lives in the village of Shin, in the region of Sheki.
These videos were produced by Azerbaijani Socks. In September, 2021, Teresa Hamilin, founder of Azerbaijani Socks walked through the mountainous regions of Azerbaijan with the purpose of researching the history, traditions and designs of knitted socks. These videos were produced with the hope of preserving this valuable craft, to celebrate the talented women of Azerbaijan, and to encourage them to pass this tradition to the next generation.
