A personal fan tribute to [update: Burt Young (1940-2023)], the actor (and painter) who played Paulie, the most lovable and annoying loser/bum/drunk in any franchise [my first tribute to an actor still living]. Paul is supposed to represent what Rocky may have been. I think he was going to be much darker at first, but became a little more comic over time.

Paulie (Burt) died October 8th, 2023. Great actor for this role. He did other roles with Jimmy Caan and even Rodney Dangerfield. RIP Paulie. Good job.

Burt Young is a legend! Trained as an actor at Lee Strasberg's Actor Studio, he's also a painter! While in the marines win 32 of 34 boxing matches. Then he turned pro and had a 17-0 record, managed by Cus D'Amato! And of course, of Italian descent :)

Seemed like they modeled his character after fighter two ton Tony Galento. I also met Burt Young, and he was very much a gentleman. Back in 1988 he ran the NYC Marathon. Quite a guy!

What an incredible and complex addition to the series that brought much joy, frustration, anger and sadness to the series. We never found out what happened to Paulie and Adrian's Parents. Based on what we know from the Original Rocky, Paulie had been living with his Sister for quite some time. The Parents probably died very young, and Paulie thought he could take care of his younger Sister. But after some time, she ended up taking care of him.

I met Burt Young when skating down Lexington Avenue outside the Waldorf, where he was getting out of a taxi and said "Hey look at the kid on the skates." I went up to him, said "Hey, you're Burt Young" and shook his hand. I bet he was shocked I knew his name but I got HBO in February, 1978 when they showed Rocky twenty-three times.

They had a good bond. You can tell Rocky loves his brother in law. He put up with alot of Paulies shit and still took care of him. He even kicked Tommy's ass for putting his hands on Paulie.

PAULIE - WE LOVE YOU BROTHER!!! . . . . . . I remember being just a lil punk kid, my dad taking me to all the Rocky flicks. One of my favorite memories was a scene in Rocky III. Rocky bails Paulie outta jail. Paulie's bustin Rocky's balls about not giving him a job, not happy about Rocky's present - shitty 'ex-lax' watch etc. Clearly fed-up, Rock says......'you're like this crazy brother.....you ain't jive - you ain't down, you're just a jealous, lazy bum'. Classic - hahaha Paul Young kept cranking flicks in the 80's that were essentially different versions of his beloved 'Paulie' character......'Pope of Greenwich Village' (with....Mickey Rourke), 'Back to School' (with....Rodney Dangerfield) etc. You are missed my beautiful brother.
