"I've never liked that whole thing" Burton Cummings is damn right about these Idol shows. That's not what music is about. This is a guy who worked his butt off honing his talent and skill and didn't rely on some contrived tv show to launch him into history.

The Guess Who and other bands like his were authentic. Did their own singing, played their own instruments, no auto-tune or any other fake methods. That’s when bands were the real thing. I miss those times.

Burton is giving good advice, At least MR. Cummings had a voice and had written his own songs, and that being said most of which went platinum .

Burton's comments about the American Idol show are dead on. I felt the exact same way. In the 90's when karaoke became big, a bunch of us had an informal extended club where we sang at the local bars. Most of us were good but some weren't. But we respected EVERYONE who went up and at least had the guts to and try and we NEVER publicly humiliated ANYONE. The Idol programmes changed all that.

FYI The Guess Who are a Canadian rock band from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Initially gaining recognition in Canada, they also found international success from the late 1960s through the mid-1970s with numerous hit singles, including "American Woman", "These Eyes" and "Share the Land". Several former members of The Guess Who, notably Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman , have also found considerable success outside the band.The band was inducted into The Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1987

This man IS a pioneer of Rock and Roll, this Man is a very respectable and honourable musician.

10 years from now, when the entire world has forgotten Justin Bieber ever existed (and they will, look at New Kids On The Block), people will still remember and revere the great Burton Cummings.

I just recorded Stand Tall in my own little home recording studio. A friend asked me to do it for her. What a great song it was. I did it with the band when it first came out and loved it. I still do!

burton cummings fronted the guess who at the age of 17, this during the golden age of modern music, the doors the beatles the hollies ect.. he went on to write or co-write mega-hits, not just pop hits but music, music still played today (even in muzak while you are shopping) this is the the proof of art, will it be there in a hundred years or more, and yes the music of the guess who will be remembered, pop music is like a tissue, to be used and discarded.

Song writers generally get a steady stream of income in the form of royalty checks for their songs receiving airplay and other use, especially if they own the publishing rights. I think that is what Burton was trying to get across. He wasn't dissing Bieber. Burton bought the rights to much of the Guess Who catalog and likely has rights for his other works...which keeps those royalty checks coming. Tina Turner put a lot of $$$ in John Fogerty's pocket....

There's something on the internet called "KZfaq". It has videos of all kinds of bands. I think you might a few vids on the band if you do a search for them on there. You might be surprised and hear songs youve heard before but didnt realize the song/s were by them. They had many hits which lasted the test of time.While youre at it, do a search for Bachman turner overdrive as well. One of the founding members of the Guess Who formed that band (Randy Bachman).

Ah Burton, I TOTALLY agree! Although I was a bit surprised when you mentioned Elvis. Actually, Elvis didn't write all his own songs either . So I understand what you meant . One of the biggest problems with the a lot of the "music" these days is that is just prefabricated, cardboard cut-outs; good looking kids that will have no longevity. American & Canadian Idol are all about the ratings. Period. I don't see any "Burtons" emerging anytime soon. A sad state of affairs.

I think you could consider Burton an elder statesman of the art, with talent and hard work behind his experience. Good advice from him. "American Woman" was covered by Lenny Kravitz, and he said in a concert that I was attending that this song has the deepest and most memorable beginning 3 frets in music. Burton wasn't saying that Elvis wasn't successful but because he did not write his own songs, he did not have complete control of his musical career which is true. Yes, Elvis has sold millions of records but at the time he died his fortune was almost gone and he died a young man. He has been worth way more since he has been dead.

Burton Cummings is right about American Idol, Canadian Idol and internet/youtube artists. He is also right about some of the artists from American Idol & Canadian Idol making great careers afterwards.

Burton can sing,He didn't need to look sexy and be half naked to sell his music like Britney Spears and all those other freaks who can't sing,and have to take their clothes off to sell their records.

I just corrected the young man, answered his question and informed him to the apple and oranges which he seemed unable to tell apart. I was pretty calm while doing it also.

It's 2022, and 12 years since the interview. Which means there's 18 years left from your advice that an act needs to last 25 to 30 years. Justin Bieber is still doing music. Although he's not touring due to health issues.

I agree with him and he seems to have really become at ease with his celebrity and Canadian identity but I worked in radio/television in the middle 70s and early 80s and met him a few times. To be honest, he was very egotistical and totally full of himself. i met a lot of Canadian artist of that time era and he was one that i disliked the most. But time has a way of changing you and from this interview he seems to have really settled back and turned into a logical and interesting person.

I really love Cummings. Don't get me wrong. But had he had an eyebrow lift sat this time? Something like that? Something seems amiss. Regardless, he is, for so many reasons, one of the greats. I have had the song "Laughing" on my mind all.day.long -- specifically, the part where he is laughing. Haha.

There are a laundry list of writers on his albums. His input is virtually non-existent, Maybe the original lyrics before they were re-wrote by hired writers or the basic rhythm of some of them prior to being totally rearranged and changed. The songs which made him a success werent the ones he wrote. In any case, he should be grateful for the success he has achieved and bank his money. Soon the material he does wont sell and his fans will out grow him.

Bieber fans, this isn't the fantasy industry you've been sold. The operative term in "Music Business" is Business and they're known to screw over people who aren't that involved in their works. Justin co-composed the vast majority of his repertoire with three or more co-composers per song, many of which were producers and arrangers. And it's quite common for pop acts to get token accreditation for minor lyric changes or vocal arrangements/improvisations.

Burton needed no TV coverage,or paper news coverage. He wrote and played original music that made a huge impact on everyones lives,not cell phone speakers tinny garbage !!! He still does,and always will. Idol shows and naked and stupid-as-a-rock shows are for selling DISHSOAP AND DIAPERS, not making girls cry !!! Same endorphins for the needy cellphone addicts,but never the same as real music !!!

It's not our fault that your radio stations aren't playing as wide a variety of music as ours. I don't mean it as a put down, so don't take it that way. I know you lot. Turn off the Eurovision and widen the expanse. My radio stations don't play Hunters and Collectors much and yet I educated myself and love them. I'm turning 50, Burton was all over the radio all over the world and had classic, top selling albums after The Guess Who disbanded, was renowned as a maniac performer. Everybody who was anybody wanted to go to his sold out shows. How hard is it for you to make a search on youtube to find his stuff? Google, Wiki... how hard is it? You will see the albums, the album sales and on and on and on. He's not just a musician. He is also a damned good writer.
